Dutiyasattakasutta Non-Decline for Mendicants (2nd)

ā€œSatta vo, bhikkhave, aparihāniye dhamme desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you seven principles that prevent decline.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha ā€¦peā€¦ Listen and apply your mind well ā€¦

katame ca, bhikkhave, satta aparihāniyā dhammā? And what are the seven principles that prevent decline?

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« na kammārāmā bhavissanti, na kammaratā, na kammārāmataį¹ anuyuttā; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. As long as the mendicants donā€™t relish work, loving it and liking to relish it, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« na bhassārāmā bhavissanti ā€¦peā€¦ As long as they donā€™t enjoy talk ā€¦

na niddārāmā bhavissanti ā€¦ sleep ā€¦

na saį¹…gaį¹‡ikārāmā bhavissanti ā€¦ company ā€¦

na pāpicchā bhavissanti na pāpikānaį¹ icchānaį¹ vasaį¹ gatā ā€¦ they donā€™t have corrupt wishes, falling under the sway of corrupt wishes ā€¦

na pāpamittā bhavissanti na pāpasahāyā na pāpasampavaį¹…kā ā€¦ they donā€™t have bad friends, companions, and associates ā€¦

na oramattakena visesādhigamena antarāvosānaį¹ āpajjissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihāni. they donā€™t stop half-way after achieving some insignificant distinction, they can expect growth, not decline.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, ime satta aparihāniyā dhammā bhikkhÅ«su į¹hassanti, imesu ca sattasu aparihāniyesu dhammesu bhikkhÅ« sandississanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pāį¹ikaį¹…khā, no parihānÄ«ā€ti. As long as these seven principles that prevent decline last among the mendicants, and as long as the mendicants are seen following them, they can expect growth, not decline.ā€
