SattaviƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hitisutta Planes of Consciousness
āSattimÄ, bhikkhave, viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hitiyo. āMendicants, there are these seven planes of consciousness.
KatamÄ satta? What seven?
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ nÄnattakÄyÄ nÄnattasaƱƱino, seyyathÄpi manussÄ, ekacce ca devÄ, ekacce ca vinipÄtikÄ. There are sentient beings that are diverse in body and diverse in perception, such as human beings, some gods, and some beings in the underworld.
Ayaį¹ paį¹hamÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the first plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ nÄnattakÄyÄ ekattasaƱƱino, seyyathÄpi devÄ brahmakÄyikÄ paį¹hamÄbhinibbattÄ. There are sentient beings that are diverse in body and unified in perception, such as the gods reborn in the Divinityās host through the first absorption.
Ayaį¹ dutiyÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the second plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ ekattakÄyÄ nÄnattasaƱƱino, seyyathÄpi devÄ ÄbhassarÄ. There are sentient beings that are unified in body and diverse in perception, such as the gods of streaming radiance.
Ayaį¹ tatiyÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the third plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ ekattakÄyÄ ekattasaƱƱino, seyyathÄpi devÄ subhakiį¹hÄ. There are sentient beings that are unified in body and unified in perception, such as the gods of universal beauty.
Ayaį¹ catutthÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the fourth plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱÄnaį¹ samatikkamÄ paį¹ighasaƱƱÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ nÄnattasaƱƱÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ āananto ÄkÄsoāti ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanÅ«pagÄ. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond perceptions of form. With the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that āspace is infiniteā, they have been reborn in the dimension of infinite space.
Ayaį¹ paƱcamÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the fifth plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ sabbaso ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma āanantaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹anāti viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanÅ«pagÄ. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond the dimension of infinite space. Aware that āconsciousness is infiniteā, they have been reborn in the dimension of infinite consciousness.
Ayaį¹ chaį¹į¹hÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the sixth plane of consciousness.
Santi, bhikkhave, sattÄ sabbaso viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma ānatthi kiƱcÄ«āti ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatanÅ«pagÄ. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness. Aware that āthere is nothing at allā, they have been reborn in the dimension of nothingness.
Ayaį¹ sattamÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hiti. This is the seventh plane of consciousness.
ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, satta viƱƱÄį¹aį¹į¹hitiyoāti. These are the seven planes of consciousness.ā
