SattaviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hitisutta Planes of Consciousness

ā€œSattimā, bhikkhave, viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hitiyo. ā€œMendicants, there are these seven planes of consciousness.

Katamā satta? What seven?

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā nānattakāyā nānattasaƱƱino, seyyathāpi manussā, ekacce ca devā, ekacce ca vinipātikā. There are sentient beings that are diverse in body and diverse in perception, such as human beings, some gods, and some beings in the underworld.

Ayaį¹ paį¹­hamā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the first plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā nānattakāyā ekattasaƱƱino, seyyathāpi devā brahmakāyikā paį¹­hamābhinibbattā. There are sentient beings that are diverse in body and unified in perception, such as the gods reborn in the Divinityā€™s host through the first absorption.

Ayaį¹ dutiyā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the second plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā ekattakāyā nānattasaƱƱino, seyyathāpi devā ābhassarā. There are sentient beings that are unified in body and diverse in perception, such as the gods of streaming radiance.

Ayaį¹ tatiyā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the third plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā ekattakāyā ekattasaƱƱino, seyyathāpi devā subhakiį¹‡hā. There are sentient beings that are unified in body and unified in perception, such as the gods of universal beauty.

Ayaį¹ catutthā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the fourth plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱānaį¹ samatikkamā paį¹­ighasaƱƱānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā nānattasaƱƱānaį¹ amanasikārā ā€˜ananto ākāsoā€™ti ākāsānaƱcāyatanÅ«pagā. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond perceptions of form. With the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ā€˜space is infiniteā€™, they have been reborn in the dimension of infinite space.

Ayaį¹ paƱcamā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the fifth plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā sabbaso ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma ā€˜anantaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanÅ«pagā. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond the dimension of infinite space. Aware that ā€˜consciousness is infiniteā€™, they have been reborn in the dimension of infinite consciousness.

Ayaį¹ chaį¹­į¹­hā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the sixth plane of consciousness.

Santi, bhikkhave, sattā sabbaso viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma ā€˜natthi kiƱcÄ«ā€™ti ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanÅ«pagā. There are sentient beings that have gone totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness. Aware that ā€˜there is nothing at allā€™, they have been reborn in the dimension of nothingness.

Ayaį¹ sattamā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hiti. This is the seventh plane of consciousness.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, satta viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹­į¹­hitiyoā€ti. These are the seven planes of consciousness.ā€
