Dutiyaaggisutta Fires (2nd)

Tena kho pana samayena uggatasarÄ«rassa brāhmaį¹‡assa mahāyaƱƱo upakkhaį¹­o hoti. Now at that time the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra had prepared a large sacrifice.

PaƱca usabhasatāni thÅ«į¹‡Å«panÄ«tāni honti yaƱƱatthāya, paƱca vacchatarasatāni thÅ«į¹‡Å«panÄ«tāni honti yaƱƱatthāya, paƱca vacchatarisatāni thÅ«į¹‡Å«panÄ«tāni honti yaƱƱatthāya, paƱca ajasatāni thÅ«į¹‡Å«panÄ«tāni honti yaƱƱatthāya, paƱca urabbhasatāni thÅ«į¹‡Å«panÄ«tāni honti yaƱƱatthāya. Bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats and ramsā€”five hundred of eachā€”had been led to the post for the sacrifice.

Atha kho uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha,

ā€œSutaį¹ metaį¹, bho gotama, aggissa ādānaį¹ yÅ«passa ussāpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti. ā€œWorthy Gotama, I have heard that kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post is very fruitful and beneficial.ā€

ā€œMayāpi kho etaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, sutaį¹ aggissa ādānaį¹ yÅ«passa ussāpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti. ā€œIā€™ve also heard this, brahmin.ā€

Dutiyampi kho uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o ā€¦peā€¦ For a second time ā€¦

tatiyampi kho uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and third time UggatasarÄ«ra said to the Buddha,

ā€œsutaį¹ metaį¹, bho gotama, aggissa ādānaį¹ yÅ«passa ussāpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti. ā€œWorthy Gotama, I have heard that kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post is very fruitful and beneficial.ā€

ā€œMayāpi kho etaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, sutaį¹ aggissa ādānaį¹ yÅ«passa ussāpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti. ā€œIā€™ve also heard this, brahmin.ā€

ā€œTayidaį¹, bho gotama, sameti bhoto ceva gotamassa amhākaƱca, yadidaį¹ sabbena sabbaį¹ā€. ā€œThen the worthy Gotama and I are in total agreement in this matter.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte āyasmā ānando uggatasarÄ«raį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to UggatasarÄ«ra,

ā€œna kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, tathāgatā evaį¹ pucchitabbā: ā€œBrahmin, you shouldnā€™t ask the Buddha in this way.

ā€˜sutaį¹ metaį¹, bho gotama, aggissa ādānaį¹ yÅ«passa ussāpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€™ti.

Evaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, tathāgatā pucchitabbā: You should ask in this way:

ā€˜ahaƱhi, bhante, aggiį¹ ādātukāmo, yÅ«paį¹ ussāpetukāmo. ā€˜Sir, I want to kindle the sacrificial fire and raise the sacrificial post.

Ovadatu maį¹, bhante, bhagavā. May the Buddha please advise

Anusāsatu maį¹, bhante, bhagavā yaį¹ mama assa dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāyāā€™ā€ti. and instruct me. It will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.ā€™ā€

Atha kho uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then UggatasarÄ«ra said to the Buddha,

ā€œahaƱhi, bho gotama, aggiį¹ ādātukāmo yÅ«paį¹ ussāpetukāmo. ā€œWorthy Gotama, I want to kindle the sacrificial fire and raise the sacrificial post.

Ovadatu maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo. May the worthy Gotama please advise

Anusāsatu maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo yaį¹ mama assa dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāyāā€ti. and instruct me. It will be for my lasting welfare and happiness.ā€

ā€œAggiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā tÄ«į¹‡i satthāni ussāpeti akusalāni dukkhudrayāni dukkhavipākāni. ā€œEven before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises three unskillful knives which ripen and result in suffering.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

Kāyasatthaį¹, vacÄ«satthaį¹, manosatthaį¹. The knives of the body, speech, and mind.

Aggiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā evaį¹ cittaį¹ uppādesi: Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one gives rise to the thought:

ā€˜ettakā usabhā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā vacchatarā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā vacchatariyo haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā ajā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā urabbhā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāyāā€™ti. ā€˜May this many bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams be slaughtered for the sacrifice!ā€™

So ā€˜puƱƱaį¹ karomÄ«ā€™ti apuƱƱaį¹ karoti, ā€˜kusalaį¹ karomÄ«ā€™ti akusalaį¹ karoti, ā€˜sugatiyā maggaį¹ pariyesāmÄ«ā€™ti duggatiyā maggaį¹ pariyesati. Thinking, ā€˜May I make goodnessā€™, one makes wickedness. Thinking, ā€˜May I do goodā€™, one does bad. Thinking, ā€˜May I seek the path to a good rebirthā€™, one seeks the path to a bad rebirth.

Aggiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā idaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ manosatthaį¹ ussāpeti akusalaį¹ dukkhudrayaį¹ dukkhavipākaį¹. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one raises this first unskillful mental knife which ripens and results in suffering.

Puna caparaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, aggiį¹ ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā evaį¹ vācaį¹ bhāsati: Furthermore, even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one says such things as:

ā€˜ettakā usabhā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā vacchatarā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā vacchatariyo haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā ajā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāya, ettakā urabbhā haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthāyāā€™ti. ā€˜May this many bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams be slaughtered for the sacrifice!ā€™

Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one raises this second unskillful verbal knife which ripens and results in suffering.

Puna caparaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, aggiį¹ ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā sayaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ samārambhati usabhā hantuį¹ yaƱƱatthāya, sayaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ samārambhati vacchatarā hantuį¹ yaƱƱatthāya, sayaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ samārambhati vacchatariyo hantuį¹ yaƱƱatthāya, sayaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ samārambhati ajā hantuį¹ yaƱƱatthāya, sayaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ samārambhati urabbhā hantuį¹ yaƱƱatthāya. Furthermore, even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one first personally undertakes preparations for the sacrificial slaughter of bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams.

So ā€˜puƱƱaį¹ karomÄ«ā€™ti apuƱƱaį¹ karoti, ā€˜kusalaį¹ karomÄ«ā€™ti akusalaį¹ karoti, ā€˜sugatiyā maggaį¹ pariyesāmÄ«ā€™ti duggatiyā maggaį¹ pariyesati. Thinking, ā€˜May I make goodnessā€™, one makes wickedness. Thinking, ā€˜May I do goodā€™, one does bad. Thinking, ā€˜May I seek the path to a good rebirthā€™, one seeks the path to a bad rebirth.

Aggiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā idaį¹ tatiyaį¹ kāyasatthaį¹ ussāpeti akusalaį¹ dukkhudrayaį¹ dukkhavipākaį¹. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises this third unskillful bodily knife which ripens and results in suffering.

Aggiį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, ādento yÅ«paį¹ ussāpento pubbeva yaƱƱā imāni tÄ«į¹‡i satthāni ussāpeti akusalāni dukkhudrayāni dukkhavipākāni. Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post, one raises these three unskillful knives which ripen and result in suffering.

Tayome, brāhmaį¹‡a, aggÄ« pahātabbā parivajjetabbā, na sevitabbā. Brahmin, these three fires should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.

Katame tayo? What three?

Rāgaggi, dosaggi, mohaggi. The fires of greed, hate, and delusion.

Kasmā cāyaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, rāgaggi pahātabbo parivajjetabbo, na sevitabbo? And why should the fire of greed be given up and rejected, not cultivated?

Ratto kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, rāgena abhibhÅ«to pariyādinnacitto kāyena duccaritaį¹ carati, vācāya duccaritaį¹ carati, manasā duccaritaį¹ carati. A greedy person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena duccaritaį¹ caritvā, vācāya duccaritaį¹ caritvā, manasā duccaritaį¹ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Tasmāyaį¹ rāgaggi pahātabbo parivajjetabbo, na sevitabbo. Thatā€™s why the fire of greed should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.

Kasmā cāyaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, dosaggi pahātabbo parivajjetabbo, na sevitabbo? And why should the fire of hate be given up and rejected, not cultivated?

Duį¹­į¹­ho kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, dosena abhibhÅ«to pariyādinnacitto kāyena duccaritaį¹ carati, vācāya duccaritaį¹ carati, manasā duccaritaį¹ carati. A hateful person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena duccaritaį¹ caritvā, vācāya duccaritaį¹ caritvā, manasā duccaritaį¹ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

So kāyena duccaritaį¹ caritvā, vācāya duccaritaį¹ caritvā, manasā duccaritaį¹ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Ime kho tayo, brāhmaį¹‡a, aggÄ« pahātabbā parivajjetabbā, na sevitabbā. These three fires should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.

Tayo kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, aggÄ« sakkatvā garuį¹ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā sammā sukhaį¹ parihātabbā. Brahmin, you should properly and happily take care of three fires, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them.

Katame tayo? What three?

Āhuneyyaggi, gahapataggi, dakkhiį¹‡eyyaggi. The fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods. The fire of a householder. And the fire of those worthy of a religious donation.

Katamo ca, brāhmaį¹‡a, āhuneyyaggi? And what is the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, yassa te honti mātāti vā pitāti vā, ayaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, āhuneyyaggi. Your mother and father are called the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Atohayaį¹, brāhmaį¹‡a, āhuto sambhÅ«to, tasmāyaį¹ āhuneyyaggi sakkatvā garuį¹ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā sammā sukhaį¹ parihātabbo. Since it is from them that youā€™ve been incubated and produced. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.

Katamo ca, brāhmaį¹‡a, gahapataggi? And what is the fire of a householder?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, yassa te honti puttāti vā dārāti vā dāsāti vā pessāti vā kammakarāti vā, ayaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, gahapataggi. Your children, partners, bondservants, servants, and workers are called a householderā€™s fire.

Tasmāyaį¹ gahapataggi sakkatvā garuį¹ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā sammā sukhaį¹ parihātabbo. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.

Katamo ca, brāhmaį¹‡a, dakkhiį¹‡eyyaggi? And what is the fire of those worthy of a religious donation?

Idha, brāhmaį¹‡a, ye te samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä parappavādā paį¹­iviratā khantisoracce niviį¹­į¹­hā ekamattānaį¹ damenti, ekamattānaį¹ samenti, ekamattānaį¹ parinibbāpenti, ayaį¹ vuccati, brāhmaį¹‡a, dakkhiį¹‡eyyaggi. The ascetics and brahmins who refrain from intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and sweetness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves are called the fire of those worthy of a religious donation.

Tasmāyaį¹ dakkhiį¹‡eyyaggi sakkatvā garuį¹ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā sammā sukhaį¹ parihātabbo. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.

Ime kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, tayo aggÄ« sakkatvā garuį¹ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā sammā sukhaį¹ parihātabbā. You should properly and happily take care of these three fires, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them.

Ayaį¹ kho pana, brāhmaį¹‡a, kaį¹­į¹­haggi kālena kālaį¹ ujjaletabbo, kālena kālaį¹ ajjhupekkhitabbo, kālena kālaį¹ nibbāpetabbo, kālena kālaį¹ nikkhipitabboā€ti. But the wood fire, brahmin, should, from time to time, be fanned, watched over with equanimity, extinguished, or put aside.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, uggatasarÄ«ro brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra said to the Buddha,

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.

Esāhaį¹, bho gotama, paƱca usabhasatāni muƱcāmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca vacchatarasatāni muƱcāmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca vacchatarisatāni muƱcāmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca ajasatāni muƱcāmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca urabbhasatāni muƱcāmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi. Worthy Gotama, I now set free these five hundred bulls, five hundred bullocks, five hundred heifers, five hundred goats, and five hundred rams. I give them life!

Haritāni ceva tiį¹‡Äni khādantu, sÄ«tāni ca pānÄ«yāni pivantu, sÄ«to ca nesaį¹ vāto upavāyatanā€ti. May they eat grass and drink cool water and enjoy a cool breeze!ā€
