Tena kho pana samayena uggatasarÄ«rassa brÄhmaį¹assa mahÄyaƱƱo upakkhaį¹o hoti. Now at that time the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra had prepared a large sacrifice.
PaƱca usabhasatÄni thÅ«į¹Å«panÄ«tÄni honti yaƱƱatthÄya, paƱca vacchatarasatÄni thÅ«į¹Å«panÄ«tÄni honti yaƱƱatthÄya, paƱca vacchatarisatÄni thÅ«į¹Å«panÄ«tÄni honti yaƱƱatthÄya, paƱca ajasatÄni thÅ«į¹Å«panÄ«tÄni honti yaƱƱatthÄya, paƱca urabbhasatÄni thÅ«į¹Å«panÄ«tÄni honti yaƱƱatthÄya. Bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats and ramsāfive hundred of eachāhad been led to the post for the sacrifice.
Atha kho uggatasarÄ«ro brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho uggatasarÄ«ro brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha,
āSutaį¹ metaį¹, bho gotama, aggissa ÄdÄnaį¹ yÅ«passa ussÄpanaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahÄnisaį¹sanāti. āWorthy Gotama, I have heard that kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post is very fruitful and beneficial.ā

KÄyasatthaį¹, vacÄ«satthaį¹, manosatthaį¹. The knives of the body, speech, and mind.
Aggiį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, Ädento yÅ«paį¹ ussÄpento pubbeva yaĆ±Ć±Ä evaį¹ cittaį¹ uppÄdesi: Even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one gives rise to the thought:
āettakÄ usabhÄ haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthÄya, ettakÄ vacchatarÄ haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthÄya, ettakÄ vacchatariyo haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthÄya, ettakÄ ajÄ haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthÄya, ettakÄ urabbhÄ haƱƱantu yaƱƱatthÄyÄāti. āMay this many bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams be slaughtered for the sacrifice!ā

Furthermore, even before kindling the sacrificial fire and raising the sacrificial post one first personally undertakes preparations for the sacrificial slaughter of bulls, bullocks, heifers, goats, and rams.

Tayome, brÄhmaį¹a, aggÄ« pahÄtabbÄ parivajjetabbÄ, na sevitabbÄ. Brahmin, these three fires should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.

RÄgaggi, dosaggi, mohaggi. The fires of greed, hate, and delusion.
KasmÄ cÄyaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, rÄgaggi pahÄtabbo parivajjetabbo, na sevitabbo? And why should the fire of greed be given up and rejected, not cultivated?
Ratto kho, brÄhmaį¹a, rÄgena abhibhÅ«to pariyÄdinnacitto kÄyena duccaritaį¹ carati, vÄcÄya duccaritaį¹ carati, manasÄ duccaritaį¹ carati. A greedy person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.
So kÄyena duccaritaį¹ caritvÄ, vÄcÄya duccaritaį¹ caritvÄ, manasÄ duccaritaį¹ caritvÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
TasmÄyaį¹ rÄgaggi pahÄtabbo parivajjetabbo, na sevitabbo. Thatās why the fire of greed should be given up and rejected, not cultivated.

Ähuneyyaggi, gahapataggi, dakkhiį¹eyyaggi. The fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods. The fire of a householder. And the fire of those worthy of a religious donation.
Katamo ca, brÄhmaį¹a, Ähuneyyaggi? And what is the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, yassa te honti mÄtÄti vÄ pitÄti vÄ, ayaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, Ähuneyyaggi. Your mother and father are called the fire of those worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Atohayaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, Ähuto sambhÅ«to, tasmÄyaį¹ Ähuneyyaggi sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ mÄnetvÄ pÅ«jetvÄ sammÄ sukhaį¹ parihÄtabbo. Since it is from them that youāve been incubated and produced. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.
Katamo ca, brÄhmaį¹a, gahapataggi? And what is the fire of a householder?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, yassa te honti puttÄti vÄ dÄrÄti vÄ dÄsÄti vÄ pessÄti vÄ kammakarÄti vÄ, ayaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, gahapataggi. Your children, partners, bondservants, servants, and workers are called a householderās fire.
TasmÄyaį¹ gahapataggi sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ mÄnetvÄ pÅ«jetvÄ sammÄ sukhaį¹ parihÄtabbo. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.
Katamo ca, brÄhmaį¹a, dakkhiį¹eyyaggi? And what is the fire of those worthy of a religious donation?
Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, ye te samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Ä parappavÄdÄ paį¹iviratÄ khantisoracce niviį¹į¹hÄ ekamattÄnaį¹ damenti, ekamattÄnaį¹ samenti, ekamattÄnaį¹ parinibbÄpenti, ayaį¹ vuccati, brÄhmaį¹a, dakkhiį¹eyyaggi. The ascetics and brahmins who refrain from intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and sweetness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves are called the fire of those worthy of a religious donation.
TasmÄyaį¹ dakkhiį¹eyyaggi sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ mÄnetvÄ pÅ«jetvÄ sammÄ sukhaį¹ parihÄtabbo. So you should properly and happily take care of this fire, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating it.
Ime kho, brÄhmaį¹a, tayo aggÄ« sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ mÄnetvÄ pÅ«jetvÄ sammÄ sukhaį¹ parihÄtabbÄ. You should properly and happily take care of these three fires, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating them.
Ayaį¹ kho pana, brÄhmaį¹a, kaį¹į¹haggi kÄlena kÄlaį¹ ujjaletabbo, kÄlena kÄlaį¹ ajjhupekkhitabbo, kÄlena kÄlaį¹ nibbÄpetabbo, kÄlena kÄlaį¹ nikkhipitabboāti. But the wood fire, brahmin, should, from time to time, be fanned, watched over with equanimity, extinguished, or put aside.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, uggatasarÄ«ro brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin UggatasarÄ«ra said to the Buddha,
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.
EsÄhaį¹, bho gotama, paƱca usabhasatÄni muƱcÄmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca vacchatarasatÄni muƱcÄmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca vacchatarisatÄni muƱcÄmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca ajasatÄni muƱcÄmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi, paƱca urabbhasatÄni muƱcÄmi jÄ«vitaį¹ demi. Worthy Gotama, I now set free these five hundred bulls, five hundred bullocks, five hundred heifers, five hundred goats, and five hundred rams. I give them life!
HaritÄni ceva tiį¹Äni khÄdantu, sÄ«tÄni ca pÄnÄ«yÄni pivantu, sÄ«to ca nesaį¹ vÄto upavÄyatanāti. May they eat grass and drink cool water and enjoy a cool breeze!ā
