Dānamahapphalasutta A Very Fruitful Gift

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā campāyaį¹ viharati gaggarāya pokkharaį¹‡iyā tÄ«re. At one time the Buddha was staying near Campā on the banks of the Gaggarā Lotus Pond.

Atha kho sambahulā campeyyakā upāsakā yena āyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho campeyyakā upāsakā āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several lay followers of Campā went to Venerable Sāriputta, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

ā€œcirassutā no, bhante, bhagavato sammukhā dhammÄ«kathā. ā€œSir, itā€™s been a long time since weā€™ve heard a Dhamma talk from the Buddha.

Sādhu mayaį¹, bhante, labheyyāma bhagavato sammukhā dhammiį¹ kathaį¹ savanāyāā€ti. It would be good if we got to hear a Dhamma talk from the Buddha.ā€

ā€œTenahāvuso, tadahuposathe āgaccheyyātha, ā€œWell then, reverends, come on the next sabbath day.

appeva nāma labheyyātha bhagavato sammukhā dhammiį¹ kathaį¹ savanāyāā€ti. Hopefully youā€™ll get to hear a Dhamma talk from the Buddha.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho campeyyakā upāsakā āyasmato sāriputtassa paį¹­issutvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkamiį¹su. ā€œYes, sirā€ they replied. Then they rose from their seats, bowed to Sāriputta, and respectfully circled him before leaving.

Atha kho campeyyakā upāsakā tadahuposathe yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Then on the next sabbath the lay followers of Campā went to Venerable Sāriputta, bowed, and stood to one side.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto tehi campeyyakehi upāsakehi saddhiį¹ yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then they went together with Sāriputta to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. Sāriputta said to the Buddha:

ā€œSiyā nu kho, bhante, idhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahānisaį¹saį¹; ā€œSir, could it be that someone gives a gift and it is not very fruitful or beneficial,

siyā pana, bhante, idhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti? while someone else gives exactly the same gift and it is very fruitful and beneficial?ā€

ā€œSiyā, sāriputta, idhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahānisaį¹saį¹; ā€œIndeed it could, Sāriputta.ā€

siyā pana, sāriputta, idhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti.

ā€œKo nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena midhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahānisaį¹saį¹; ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason for this?ā€

ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena midhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti?

ā€œIdha, sāriputta, ekacco sāpekho dānaį¹ deti, patibaddhacitto dānaį¹ deti, sannidhipekho dānaį¹ deti, ā€˜imaį¹ pecca paribhuƱjissāmÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti. ā€œSāriputta, take the case of a someone who gives a gift as an investment, their mind tied to it, expecting to keep it, thinking ā€˜Iā€™ll enjoy this in my next lifeā€™.

So taį¹ dānaį¹ deti samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā annaį¹ pānaį¹ vatthaį¹ yānaį¹ mālāgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyāvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. They give to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sāriputta, dadeyya idhekacco evarÅ«paį¹ dānanā€ti? What do you think, Sāriputta, donā€™t some people give gifts in this way?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œTatra, sāriputta, yvāyaį¹ sāpekho dānaį¹ deti, patibaddhacitto dānaį¹ deti, sannidhipekho dānaį¹ deti, ā€˜imaį¹ pecca paribhuƱjissāmÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti. ā€œSāriputta, someone who gives a gift as an investment,

So taį¹ dānaį¹ datvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä cātumahārājikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of the four great kings.

So taį¹ kammaį¹ khepetvā taį¹ iddhiį¹ taį¹ yasaį¹ taį¹ ādhipaccaį¹ āgāmÄ« hoti āgantā itthattaį¹. When that deed, success, glory, and sovereignty is spent they return to this place.

Idha pana, sāriputta, ekacco na heva kho sāpekho dānaį¹ deti, na patibaddhacitto dānaį¹ deti, na sannidhipekho dānaį¹ deti, na ā€˜imaį¹ pecca paribhuƱjissāmÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti; Next, take the case of a someone who gives a gift not as an investment, their mind not tied to it, not expecting to keep it, and not thinking, ā€˜Iā€™ll enjoy this in my next lifeā€™.

api ca kho ā€˜sāhu dānanā€™ti dānaį¹ deti ā€¦peā€¦. But they give a gift thinking, ā€˜Itā€™s good to giveā€™ ā€¦

Napi ā€˜sāhu dānanā€™ti dānaį¹ deti;

api ca kho ā€˜dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ pitupitāmahehi na arahāmi porāį¹‡aį¹ kulavaį¹saį¹ hāpetunā€™ti dānaį¹ deti ā€¦peā€¦. They give a gift thinking, ā€˜Giving was practiced by my father and my fatherā€™s father. It would not be right for me to abandon this family tradition.ā€™ ā€¦

Napi ā€˜dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ pitupitāmahehi na arahāmi porāį¹‡aį¹ kulavaį¹saį¹ hāpetunā€™ti dānaį¹ deti;

api ca kho ā€˜ahaį¹ pacāmi, ime na pacanti, nārahāmi pacanto apacantānaį¹ dānaį¹ adātunā€™ti dānaį¹ deti ā€¦peā€¦. They give a gift thinking, ā€˜I cook, they donā€™t. It wouldnā€™t be right for me to not give to them.ā€™ ā€¦

api ca kho ā€˜yathā tesaį¹ pubbakānaį¹ isÄ«naį¹ tāni mahāyaƱƱāni ahesuį¹, seyyathidaį¹ā€”They give a gift thinking, ā€˜The ancient brahmin seers were Aį¹­į¹­haka, Vāmaka, Vāmadeva, Vessāmitta, Yamadaggi, Aį¹…gÄ«rasa, Bhāradvāja, Vāseį¹­į¹­ha, Kassapa, and Bhagu.

aį¹­į¹­hakassa vāmakassa vāmadevassa vessāmittassa yamadaggino aį¹…gÄ«rasassa bhāradvājassa vāseį¹­į¹­hassa kassapassa bhaguno, evaį¹ me ayaį¹ dānasaį¹vibhāgo bhavissatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti ā€¦peā€¦. Just as they performed great sacrifices, I will share a gift.ā€™ ā€¦

Napi ā€˜yathā tesaį¹ pubbakānaį¹ isÄ«naį¹ tāni mahāyaƱƱāni ahesuį¹, seyyathidaį¹ā€”

aį¹­į¹­hakassa vāmakassa vāmadevassa vessāmittassa yamadaggino aį¹…gÄ«rasassa bhāradvājassa vāseį¹­į¹­hassa kassapassa bhaguno, evaį¹ me ayaį¹ dānasaį¹vibhāgo bhavissatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti;

api ca kho ā€˜imaį¹ me dānaį¹ dadato cittaį¹ pasÄ«dati, attamanatā somanassaį¹ upajāyatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti ā€¦peā€¦. They give a gift thinking, ā€˜When giving this gift my mind becomes clear, and I become happy and joyful.ā€™ ā€¦

Napi ā€˜imaį¹ me dānaį¹ dadato cittaį¹ pasÄ«dati, attamanatā somanassaį¹ upajāyatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti; They donā€™t give a gift thinking, ā€˜When giving this gift my mind becomes clear, and I become happy and joyful.ā€™

api ca kho cittālaį¹…kāracittaparikkhāraį¹ dānaį¹ deti. But they give a gift thinking, ā€˜This is an adornment and requisite for the mind.ā€™

So taį¹ dānaį¹ deti samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā annaį¹ pānaį¹ vatthaį¹ yānaį¹ mālāgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyāvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. They give to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

api ca kho cittālaį¹…kāracittaparikkhāraį¹ dānaį¹ deti. but thinking, ā€˜This is an adornment and requisite for the mindā€™,

So taį¹ dānaį¹ datvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä brahmakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn among the gods of the Divinityā€™s host.

So taį¹ kammaį¹ khepetvā taį¹ iddhiį¹ taį¹ yasaį¹ taį¹ ādhipaccaį¹ anāgāmÄ« hoti anāgantā itthattaį¹. When that deed, success, glory, and sovereignty is spent they are a non-returner; they do not return to this place.

Ayaį¹ kho, sāriputta, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena midhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ na mahapphalaį¹ hoti na mahānisaį¹saį¹. This is the cause, this is the reason why someone gives a gift and it is not very fruitful or beneficial,

Ayaį¹ pana, sāriputta, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena midhekaccassa tādisaį¹yeva dānaį¹ dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹ hoti mahānisaį¹sanā€ti. while someone else gives exactly the same gift and it is very fruitful and beneficial.ā€
