Purisagatisutta Places People Are Reborn

ā€œSatta ca, bhikkhave, purisagatiyo desessāmi anupādā ca parinibbānaį¹. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you seven places people are reborn, and extinguishment by not grasping.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ the mendicants replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œkatamā ca, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo? ā€œAnd what are the seven places people are reborn?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: Take a mendicant who practices like this:

ā€˜no cassa no ca me siyā, na bhavissati na me bhavissati, yadatthi yaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ taį¹ pajahāmÄ«ā€™ti upekkhaį¹ paį¹­ilabhati. ā€˜It might not be, and it might not be mine. It will not be, and it will not be mine. I am giving up what exists, what has come to be.ā€™ They gain equanimity.

So bhave na rajjati, sambhave na rajjati, atthuttari padaį¹ santaį¹ sammappaƱƱāya passati. Theyā€™re not attached to life, or to creating a new life. And they see with right wisdom that there is a peaceful state beyond.

TaƱca khvassa padaį¹ na sabbena sabbaį¹ sacchikataį¹ hoti, tassa na sabbena sabbaį¹ mānānusayo pahÄ«no hoti, na sabbena sabbaį¹ bhavarāgānusayo pahÄ«no hoti, na sabbena sabbaį¹ avijjānusayo pahÄ«no hoti. But they havenā€™t completely realized that state. They havenā€™t totally given up the underlying tendencies of conceit, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

So paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyÄ« hoti. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished between one life and the next.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, divasaį¹santatte ayokapāle haƱƱamāne papaį¹­ikā nibbattitvā nibbāyeyya. Suppose you struck an iron pot that had been heated all day. Any spark that flew off would be extinguished.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: In the same way, a mendicant who practices like this ā€¦

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, divasaį¹santatte ayokapāle haƱƱamāne papaį¹­ikā nibbattitvā uppatitvā paritte tiį¹‡apuƱje vā kaį¹­į¹­hapuƱje vā nipateyya. Suppose you struck an iron pot that had been heated all day. Any spark that flew off and floated away would fall on a little heap of grass or twigs.

Sā tattha aggimpi janeyya, dhÅ«mampi janeyya, aggimpi janetvā dhÅ«mampi janetvā tameva parittaį¹ tiį¹‡apuƱjaį¹ vā kaį¹­į¹­hapuƱjaį¹ vā pariyādiyitvā anāhārā nibbāyeyya. There it would ignite a fire and produce smoke. But the fire would consume the grass or twigs and become extinguished due to not being fed.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: In the same way, a mendicant who practices like this ā€¦

ā€˜no cassa no ca me siyā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜It might not be, and it might not be mine. ā€¦ā€™

so paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished without extra effort.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: Take a mendicant who practices like this:

so paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re extinguished with extra effort.

Sā tattha aggimpi janeyya, dhÅ«mampi janeyya, aggimpi janetvā dhÅ«mampi janetvā tameva vipulaį¹ tiį¹‡apuƱjaį¹ vā kaį¹­į¹­hapuƱjaį¹ vā pariyādiyitvā anāhārā nibbāyeyya. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, divasaį¹santatte ayokapāle haƱƱamāne papaį¹­ikā nibbattitvā uppatitvā mahante tiį¹‡apuƱje vā kaį¹­į¹­hapuƱje vā nipateyya. Suppose you struck an iron pot that had been heated all day. Any spark that flew off and floated away would fall on a huge heap of grass or twigs.

Sā tattha aggimpi janeyya, dhÅ«mampi janeyya, aggimpi janetvā dhÅ«mampi janetvā tameva mahantaį¹ tiį¹‡apuƱjaį¹ vā kaį¹­į¹­hapuƱjaį¹ vā pariyādiyitvā gacchampi daheyya, dāyampi daheyya, gacchampi dahitvā dāyampi dahitvā haritantaį¹ vā pathantaį¹ vā selantaį¹ vā udakantaį¹ vā ramaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vā bhÅ«mibhāgaį¹ āgamma anāhārā nibbāyeyya. There it would ignite a fire and produce smoke. And after consuming the grass and twigs, the fire would burn up plants and trees until it reached a green field, a roadside, a cliffā€™s edge, a body of water, or cleared parkland, where it would be extinguished due to not being fed.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: In the same way, a mendicant who practices like this ā€¦

ā€˜no cassa no ca me siyā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜It might not be, and it might not be mine. ā€¦ā€™

so paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā uddhaį¹soto hoti akaniį¹­į¹­hagāmÄ«. With the ending of the five lower fetters they head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹­į¹­ha realm.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo. These are the seven places people are reborn.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anupādāparinibbānaį¹? And what is extinguishment by not grasping?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹­ipanno hoti: Take a mendicant who practices like this:

ā€˜no cassa no ca me siyā, na bhavissati na me bhavissati, yadatthi yaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ taį¹ pajahāmÄ«ā€™ti upekkhaį¹ paį¹­ilabhati. ā€˜It might not be, and it might not be mine. It will not be, and it will not be mine. I am giving up what exists, what has come to be.ā€™ They gain equanimity.

So āsavānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Theyā€™ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anupādāparinibbānaį¹. This is called extinguishment by not grasping.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo anupādā ca parinibbānanā€ti. These are the seven places people are reborn, and extinguishment by not grasping.ā€
