Purisagatisutta Places People Are Reborn
āSatta ca, bhikkhave, purisagatiyo desessÄmi anupÄdÄ ca parinibbÄnaį¹. āMendicants, I will teach you seven places people are reborn, and extinguishment by not grasping.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā the mendicants replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
ākatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo? āAnd what are the seven places people are reborn?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹ipanno hoti: Take a mendicant who practices like this:
āno cassa no ca me siyÄ, na bhavissati na me bhavissati, yadatthi yaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ taį¹ pajahÄmÄ«āti upekkhaį¹ paį¹ilabhati. āIt might not be, and it might not be mine. It will not be, and it will not be mine. I am giving up what exists, what has come to be.ā They gain equanimity.
So bhave na rajjati, sambhave na rajjati, atthuttari padaį¹ santaį¹ sammappaƱƱÄya passati. Theyāre not attached to life, or to creating a new life. And they see with right wisdom that there is a peaceful state beyond.
TaƱca khvassa padaį¹ na sabbena sabbaį¹ sacchikataį¹ hoti, tassa na sabbena sabbaį¹ mÄnÄnusayo pahÄ«no hoti, na sabbena sabbaį¹ bhavarÄgÄnusayo pahÄ«no hoti, na sabbena sabbaį¹ avijjÄnusayo pahÄ«no hoti. But they havenāt completely realized that state. They havenāt totally given up the underlying tendencies of conceit, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.
So paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ antarÄparinibbÄyÄ« hoti. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyāre extinguished between one life and the next.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, divasaį¹santatte ayokapÄle haƱƱamÄne papaį¹ikÄ nibbattitvÄ nibbÄyeyya. Suppose you struck an iron pot that had been heated all day. Any spark that flew off would be extinguished.
Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹ipanno hoti: In the same way, a mendicant who practices like this ā¦

SÄ tattha aggimpi janeyya, dhÅ«mampi janeyya, aggimpi janetvÄ dhÅ«mampi janetvÄ tameva parittaį¹ tiį¹apuƱjaį¹ vÄ kaį¹į¹hapuƱjaį¹ vÄ pariyÄdiyitvÄ anÄhÄrÄ nibbÄyeyya. There it would ignite a fire and produce smoke. But the fire would consume the grass or twigs and become extinguished due to not being fed.

SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, divasaį¹santatte ayokapÄle haƱƱamÄne papaį¹ikÄ nibbattitvÄ uppatitvÄ mahante tiį¹apuƱje vÄ kaį¹į¹hapuƱje vÄ nipateyya. Suppose you struck an iron pot that had been heated all day. Any spark that flew off and floated away would fall on a huge heap of grass or twigs.
SÄ tattha aggimpi janeyya, dhÅ«mampi janeyya, aggimpi janetvÄ dhÅ«mampi janetvÄ tameva mahantaį¹ tiį¹apuƱjaį¹ vÄ kaį¹į¹hapuƱjaį¹ vÄ pariyÄdiyitvÄ gacchampi daheyya, dÄyampi daheyya, gacchampi dahitvÄ dÄyampi dahitvÄ haritantaį¹ vÄ pathantaį¹ vÄ selantaį¹ vÄ udakantaį¹ vÄ ramaį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ bhÅ«mibhÄgaį¹ Ägamma anÄhÄrÄ nibbÄyeyya. There it would ignite a fire and produce smoke. And after consuming the grass and twigs, the fire would burn up plants and trees until it reached a green field, a roadside, a cliffās edge, a body of water, or cleared parkland, where it would be extinguished due to not being fed.

ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo. These are the seven places people are reborn.
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, anupÄdÄparinibbÄnaį¹? And what is extinguishment by not grasping?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹ paį¹ipanno hoti: Take a mendicant who practices like this:
āno cassa no ca me siyÄ, na bhavissati na me bhavissati, yadatthi yaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ taį¹ pajahÄmÄ«āti upekkhaį¹ paį¹ilabhati. āIt might not be, and it might not be mine. It will not be, and it will not be mine. I am giving up what exists, what has come to be.ā They gain equanimity.

So ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ ā¦peā¦ sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. Theyāve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, anupÄdÄparinibbÄnaį¹. This is called extinguishment by not grasping.
ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, satta purisagatiyo anupÄdÄ ca parinibbÄnanāti. These are the seven places people are reborn, and extinguishment by not grasping.ā
