Tissabrahmāsutta Tissa the Divinity

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain.

Atha kho dve devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ gijjhakÅ«į¹­aį¹ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho ekā devatā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then, late at night, two glorious deities, lighting up the entire Vultureā€™s Peak, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. One deity said to him,

ā€œetā, bhante, bhikkhuniyo vimuttāā€ti. ā€œSir, these nuns are freed!ā€

Aparā devatā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: The other deity said to him,

ā€œetā, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anupādisesā suvimuttāā€ti. ā€œSir, these nuns are well freed with no residue!ā€

Idamavocuį¹ tā devatā. This is what those deities said,

SamanuƱƱo satthā ahosi. and the teacher approved.

Atha kho tā devatā ā€œsamanuƱƱo satthāā€ti bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyiį¹su. Then those deities, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.

Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi: Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened.

ā€œimaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ dve devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kevalakappaį¹ gijjhakÅ«į¹­aį¹ obhāsetvā yenāhaį¹ tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā maį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho, bhikkhave, ekā devatā maį¹ etadavoca:

ā€˜etā, bhante, bhikkhuniyo vimuttāā€™ti.

Aparā devatā maį¹ etadavoca:

ā€˜etā, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anupādisesā suvimuttāā€™ti.

Idamavocuį¹, bhikkhave, tā devatā.

Idaį¹ vatvā maį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā tatthevantaradhāyiį¹sÅ«ā€ti.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavato avidūre nisinno hoti. Now at that time Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was sitting not far from the Buddha.

Atha kho āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa etadahosi: He thought,

ā€œkatamesānaį¹ kho devānaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œWhich gods know whether a person has anything left over or not?ā€

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ā€ti?

Tena kho pana samayena tisso nāma bhikkhu adhunākālaį¹…kato aƱƱataraį¹ brahmalokaį¹ upapanno hoti. Now, at that time a monk called Tissa had recently passed away and been reborn in a realm of divinity.

Tatrāpi naį¹ evaį¹ jānanti: There they knew that

ā€œtisso brahmā mahiddhiko mahānubhāvoā€ti. Tissa the Divinity was very mighty and powerful.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallānoā€”seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ pasāreyya, pasāritaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaį¹ā€”gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate antarahito tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pāturahosi. And then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from the Vultureā€™s Peak and reappeared in that realm of divinity.

Addasā kho tisso brahmā āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ dÅ«ratova āgacchantaį¹. Tissa saw Moggallāna coming off in the distance,

Disvā āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him,

ā€œehi kho, mārisa moggallāna; ā€œCome, my good Moggallāna!

svāgataį¹, mārisa moggallāna. Welcome, my good Moggallāna!

Cirassaį¹ kho, mārisa moggallāna, imaį¹ pariyāyamakāsi, yadidaį¹ idhāgamanāya. Itā€™s been a long time since you took the opportunity to come here.

NisÄ«da, mārisa moggallāna, idamāsanaį¹ paƱƱattanā€ti. Sit, my good Moggallāna, this seat is for you.ā€

Nisīdi kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno paƱƱatte āsane. Moggallāna sat down on the seat spread out.

Tissopi kho brahmā āyasmantaį¹ mahāmoggallānaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then Tissa bowed to Moggallāna and sat to one side.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho tissaį¹ brahmānaį¹ āyasmā mahāmoggallāno etadavoca: Moggallāna said to him,

ā€œkatamesānaį¹ kho, tissa, devānaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œWhich gods know whether a person has anything left over or not?ā€

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œBrahmakāyikānaį¹ kho, mārisa moggallāna, devānaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œThe gods of the Divinityā€™s host know this.ā€

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ā€ti.

ā€œSabbesaƱƱeva kho, tissa, brahmakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œBut do all of them know this?ā€

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œNa kho, mārisa moggallāna, sabbesaį¹ brahmakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: ā€œNo, my good Moggallāna, not all of them.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Ye kho te, mārisa moggallāna, brahmakāyikā devā brahmena āyunā santuį¹­į¹­hā brahmena vaį¹‡į¹‡ena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena ādhipateyyena santuį¹­į¹­hā, te uttari nissaraį¹‡aį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti. Those gods of the Divinityā€™s host who are content with the lifespan of the Divinity, with the beauty, happiness, glory, and sovereignty of the Divinity, and who donā€™t truly understand any escape beyond:

Tesaį¹ na evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: they donā€™t know this.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Ye ca kho te, mārisa moggallāna, brahmakāyikā devā brahmena āyunā asantuį¹­į¹­hā, brahmena vaį¹‡į¹‡ena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena ādhipateyyena asantuį¹­į¹­hā, te ca uttari nissaraį¹‡aį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānanti. But those gods of the Divinityā€™s host who are not content with the lifespan of the Divinity, with the beauty, happiness, glory, and sovereignty of the Divinity, and who do truly understand any escape beyond:

Tesaį¹ evaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: they do know this.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Idha, mārisa moggallāna, bhikkhu ubhatobhāgavimutto hoti. Take a mendicant who is freed both ways.

Tamenaį¹ te devā evaį¹ jānanti: The gods know of them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā ubhatobhāgavimutto. ā€˜This venerable is freed both ways.

Yāvassa kāyo į¹­hassati tāva naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussā. As long as their body remains they will be seen by gods and humans.

Kāyassa bhedā na naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussāā€™ti. But when their body breaks up gods and humans will see them no more.ā€™

Evampi kho, mārisa moggallāna, tesaį¹ devānaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Idha pana, mārisa moggallāna, bhikkhu paƱƱāvimutto hoti. Take a mendicant who is freed by wisdom.

Tamenaį¹ te devā evaį¹ jānanti: The gods know of them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā paƱƱāvimutto. ā€˜This venerable is freed by wisdom.

Yāvassa kāyo į¹­hassati tāva naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussā. As long as their body remains they will be seen by gods and humans.

Kāyassa bhedā na naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussāā€™ti. But when their body breaks up gods and humans will see them no more.ā€™

Evampi kho, mārisa moggallāna, tesaį¹ devānaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Idha pana, mārisa moggallāna, bhikkhu kāyasakkhī hoti. Take a mendicant who is a direct witness.

Tamenaį¹ devā evaį¹ jānanti: The gods know of them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā kāyasakkhÄ«. ā€˜This venerable is a direct witness.

Appeva nāma ayamāyasmā anulomikāni senāsanāni paį¹­isevamāno kalyāį¹‡amitte bhajamāno indriyāni samannānayamānoā€”Hopefully this venerable will frequent appropriate lodgings, associate with good friends, and control their faculties.

yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyāā€™ti. Then they might realize the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life, and live having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.ā€™

Evampi kho, mārisa moggallāna, tesaį¹ devānaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.

ā€˜saupādisese vā saupādisesoti, anupādisese vā anupādisesoā€™ti.

Idha pana, mārisa moggallāna, bhikkhu diį¹­į¹­hippatto hoti ā€¦peā€¦ Take a mendicant who is attained to view. ā€¦

saddhāvimutto hoti ā€¦peā€¦ freed by faith ā€¦

dhammānusārī hoti. a follower of teachings.

Tamenaį¹ te devā evaį¹ jānanti: The gods know of them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā dhammānusārÄ«. ā€˜This venerable is a follower of teachings.

Appeva nāma ayamāyasmā anulomikāni senāsanāni paį¹­isevamāno kalyāį¹‡amitte bhajamāno indriyāni samannānayamānoā€”Hopefully this venerable will frequent appropriate lodgings, associate with good friends, and control their faculties.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno tissassa brahmuno bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvāā€”seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ pasāreyya, pasāritaį¹ vā bāhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaį¹ā€”brahmaloke antarahito gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate pāturahosi. Moggallāna approved and agreed with what Tissa the Divinity said. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from the realm of divinity and reappeared on the Vultureā€™s Peak.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then Mahāmoggallāna went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side,

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno yāvatako ahosi tissena brahmunā saddhiį¹ kathāsallāpo taį¹ sabbaį¹ bhagavato ārocesi. and told him what had happened.

ā€œNa hi pana te, moggallāna, tisso brahmā sattamaį¹ animittavihāriį¹ puggalaį¹ desetiā€. ā€œBut Moggallāna, Tissa the Divinity didnā€™t teach the seventh person, the signless meditator.ā€

ā€œEtassa, bhagavā, kālo, etassa, sugata, kālo. ā€œNow is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One!

Yaį¹ bhagavā sattamaį¹ animittavihāriį¹ puggalaį¹ deseyya. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. May the Buddha teach the seventh person, the signless meditator. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, moggallāna, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, Moggallāna, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Mahāmoggallāna replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œIdha, moggallāna, bhikkhu sabbanimittānaį¹ amanasikārā animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. ā€œMoggallāna, take the case of a mendicant who, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.

Tamenaį¹ te devā evaį¹ jānanti: The gods know of them:

ā€˜ayaį¹ kho āyasmā sabbanimittānaį¹ amanasikārā animittaį¹ cetosamādhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. ā€˜This venerable, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.
