ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Atha kho dve devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ gijjhakÅ«į¹aį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho ekÄ devatÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then, late at night, two glorious deities, lighting up the entire Vultureās Peak, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. One deity said to him,
āetÄ, bhante, bhikkhuniyo vimuttÄāti. āSir, these nuns are freed!ā
AparÄ devatÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: The other deity said to him,
āetÄ, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anupÄdisesÄ suvimuttÄāti. āSir, these nuns are well freed with no residue!ā
Idamavocuį¹ tÄ devatÄ. This is what those deities said,
SamanuƱƱo satthÄ ahosi. and the teacher approved.
Atha kho tÄ devatÄ āsamanuƱƱo satthÄāti bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyiį¹su. Then those deities, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
Atha kho bhagavÄ tassÄ rattiyÄ accayena bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened.
āimaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ dve devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ gijjhakÅ«į¹aį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yenÄhaį¹ tenupasaį¹

āetÄ, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anupÄdisesÄ suvimuttÄāti.
Idamavocuį¹, bhikkhave, tÄ devatÄ.
Idaį¹ vatvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyiį¹sÅ«āti.
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno bhagavato avidÅ«re nisinno hoti. Now at that time Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna was sitting not far from the Buddha.
Atha kho Äyasmato mahÄmoggallÄnassa etadahosi: He thought,
ākatamesÄnaį¹ kho devÄnaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: āWhich gods know whether a person has anything left over or not?ā
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāāti?
Tena kho pana samayena tisso nÄma bhikkhu adhunÄkÄlaį¹
kato aƱƱataraį¹ brahmalokaį¹ upapanno hoti. Now, at that time a monk called Tissa had recently passed away and been reborn in a realm of divinity.
TatrÄpi naį¹ evaį¹ jÄnanti: There they knew that
ātisso brahmÄ mahiddhiko mahÄnubhÄvoāti. Tissa the Divinity was very mighty and powerful.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄnoāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaį¹āgijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate antarahito tasmiį¹ brahmaloke pÄturahosi. And then Venerable MahÄmoggallÄna, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from the Vultureās Peak and reappeared in that realm of divinity.
AddasÄ kho tisso brahmÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ dÅ«ratova Ägacchantaį¹. Tissa saw MoggallÄna coming off in the distance,
DisvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him,
āehi kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna; āCome, my good MoggallÄna!
svÄgataį¹, mÄrisa moggallÄna. Welcome, my good MoggallÄna!
Cirassaį¹ kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, imaį¹ pariyÄyamakÄsi, yadidaį¹ idhÄgamanÄya. Itās been a long time since you took the opportunity to come here.
NisÄ«da, mÄrisa moggallÄna, idamÄsanaį¹ paƱƱattanāti. Sit, my good MoggallÄna, this seat is for you.ā
NisÄ«di kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno paƱƱatte Äsane. MoggallÄna sat down on the seat spread out.
Tissopi kho brahmÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄmoggallÄnaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then Tissa bowed to MoggallÄna and sat to one side.
Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho tissaį¹ brahmÄnaį¹ ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno etadavoca: MoggallÄna said to him,
ākatamesÄnaį¹ kho, tissa, devÄnaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: āWhich gods know whether a person has anything left over or not?ā
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāāti?
āBrahmakÄyikÄnaį¹ kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, devÄnaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: āThe gods of the Divinityās host know this.ā
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāāti.
āSabbesaƱƱeva kho, tissa, brahmakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: āBut do all of them know this?ā
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāāti?
āNa kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, sabbesaį¹ brahmakÄyikÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: āNo, my good MoggallÄna, not all of them.
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāti.
Ye kho te, mÄrisa moggallÄna, brahmakÄyikÄ devÄ brahmena ÄyunÄ santuį¹į¹hÄ brahmena vaį¹į¹ena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena Ädhipateyyena santuį¹į¹hÄ, te uttari nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti. Those gods of the Divinityās host who are content with the lifespan of the Divinity, with the beauty, happiness, glory, and sovereignty of the Divinity, and who donāt truly understand any escape beyond:
Tesaį¹ na evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: they donāt know this.
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāti.
Ye ca kho te, mÄrisa moggallÄna, brahmakÄyikÄ devÄ brahmena ÄyunÄ asantuį¹į¹hÄ, brahmena vaį¹į¹ena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena Ädhipateyyena asantuį¹į¹hÄ, te ca uttari nissaraį¹aį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnanti. But those gods of the Divinityās host who are not content with the lifespan of the Divinity, with the beauty, happiness, glory, and sovereignty of the Divinity, and who do truly understand any escape beyond:
Tesaį¹ evaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: they do know this.
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāti.
Idha, mÄrisa moggallÄna, bhikkhu ubhatobhÄgavimutto hoti. Take a mendicant who is freed both ways.
Tamenaį¹ te devÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: The gods know of them:
āayaį¹ kho ÄyasmÄ ubhatobhÄgavimutto. āThis venerable is freed both ways.
YÄvassa kÄyo į¹hassati tÄva naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussÄ. As long as their body remains they will be seen by gods and humans.
KÄyassa bhedÄ na naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussÄāti. But when their body breaks up gods and humans will see them no more.ā
Evampi kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, tesaį¹ devÄnaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.
āsaupÄdisese vÄ saupÄdisesoti, anupÄdisese vÄ anupÄdisesoāti.
Idha pana, mÄrisa moggallÄna, bhikkhu paƱƱÄvimutto hoti. Take a mendicant who is freed by wisdom.

āayaį¹ kho ÄyasmÄ paƱƱÄvimutto. āThis venerable is freed by wisdom.
YÄvassa kÄyo į¹hassati tÄva naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussÄ. As long as their body remains they will be seen by gods and humans.
KÄyassa bhedÄ na naį¹ dakkhanti devamanussÄāti. But when their body breaks up gods and humans will see them no more.ā

āayaį¹ kho ÄyasmÄ kÄyasakkhÄ«. āThis venerable is a direct witness.
Appeva nÄma ayamÄyasmÄ anulomikÄni senÄsanÄni paį¹isevamÄno kalyÄį¹amitte bhajamÄno indriyÄni samannÄnayamÄnoāHopefully this venerable will frequent appropriate lodgings, associate with good friends, and control their faculties.
yassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihareyyÄāti. Then they might realize the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life, and live having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.ā
Evampi kho, mÄrisa moggallÄna, tesaį¹ devÄnaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹ hoti: This too is how those gods know whether a person has anything left over or not.

saddhÄvimutto hoti ā¦peā¦ freed by faith ā¦
dhammÄnusÄrÄ« hoti. a follower of teachings.
Tamenaį¹ te devÄ evaį¹ jÄnanti: The gods know of them:
āayaį¹ kho ÄyasmÄ dhammÄnusÄrÄ«. āThis venerable is a follower of teachings.

Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno tissassa brahmuno bhÄsitaį¹ abhinanditvÄ anumoditvÄāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evamevaį¹ābrahmaloke antarahito gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate pÄturahosi. MoggallÄna approved and agreed with what Tissa the Divinity said. Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from the realm of divinity and reappeared on the Vultureās Peak.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then MahÄmoggallÄna went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side,
Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno yÄvatako ahosi tissena brahmunÄ saddhiį¹ kathÄsallÄpo taį¹ sabbaį¹ bhagavato Ärocesi. and told him what had happened.
āNa hi pana te, moggallÄna, tisso brahmÄ sattamaį¹ animittavihÄriį¹ puggalaį¹ desetiā. āBut MoggallÄna, Tissa the Divinity didnāt teach the seventh person, the signless meditator.ā
āEtassa, bhagavÄ, kÄlo, etassa, sugata, kÄlo. āNow is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One!
Yaį¹ bhagavÄ sattamaį¹ animittavihÄriį¹ puggalaį¹ deseyya. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. May the Buddha teach the seventh person, the signless meditator. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
āTena hi, moggallÄna, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, MoggallÄna, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄmoggallÄno bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, sir,ā MahÄmoggallÄna replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āIdha, moggallÄna, bhikkhu sabbanimittÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. āMoggallÄna, take the case of a mendicant who, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.

āayaį¹ kho ÄyasmÄ sabbanimittÄnaį¹ amanasikÄrÄ animittaį¹ cetosamÄdhiį¹ upasampajja viharati. āThis venerable, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless immersion of the heart.
