Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
Atha kho sÄ«ho senÄpati yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho sÄ«ho senÄpati bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then General SÄ«ha went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āsakkÄ nu kho, bhante, sandiį¹į¹hikaį¹ dÄnaphalaį¹ paƱƱÄpetunāti? āSir, can you point out a fruit of giving thatās apparent in the present life?ā
āTena hi, sÄ«ha, taƱƱevettha paį¹ipucchissÄmi, yathÄ te khameyya tathÄ naį¹ byÄkareyyÄsi. āWell then, SÄ«ha, Iāll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, What do you think, SÄ«ha?
idha dve purisÄāConsider two people.
eko puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, eko puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnarato. One is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive. One is a faithful donor who loves charity.

āyo vÄ so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, yo vÄ so puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnaratoāāti?
āYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, kintaį¹ arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ anukampantÄ anukampissanti. āWhy would the perfected ones first show sympathy for the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive?

āyo vÄ so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, yo vÄ so puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnaratoāāti?
āYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, kintaį¹ tassa arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentÄ desessanti.

āyo vÄ so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, yo vÄ so puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnaratoāāti?
āYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, kintaį¹ tassa kalyÄį¹o kittisaddo abbhuggacchissati.
Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnarato tasseva kalyÄį¹o kittisaddo abbhuggaccheyyaā. āThe faithful donor who loves charity would get a good reputation.ā

āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, ko nu kho kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjeyya: āWhen their body breaks up, after death, which do you think would be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?ā
āyo vÄ so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, yo vÄ so puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnaratoāāti?
āYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhÄsako, kiį¹ so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjissati. āWhy would the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?
Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dÄnapati anuppadÄnarato so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjeyya. The faithful donor who loves charity would, when their body breaks up, after death, be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.
YÄnimÄni, bhante, bhagavatÄ sandiį¹į¹hikÄni dÄnaphalÄni akkhÄtÄni, nÄhaį¹ ettha bhagavato saddhÄya gacchÄmi. When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I donāt have to rely on faith in the Buddha,
Ahampi etÄni jÄnÄmi. for I know them too.
Ahaį¹, bhante, dÄyako dÄnapati, maį¹ arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ anukampantÄ anukampanti. Iām a giver, a donor, and the perfected ones show sympathy for me first.
Ahaį¹, bhante, dÄyako dÄnapati, maį¹ arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ upasaį¹
kamantÄ upasaį¹
kamanti. Iām a giver, and the perfected ones approach me first.
Ahaį¹, bhante, dÄyako dÄnapati, mayhaį¹ arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ paį¹iggaį¹hantÄ paį¹iggaį¹hanti. Iām a giver, and the perfected ones receive alms from me first.
Ahaį¹, bhante, dÄyako dÄnapati, mayhaį¹ arahanto paį¹hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentÄ desenti. Iām a giver, and the perfected ones teach me Dhamma first.
Ahaį¹, bhante, dÄyako dÄnapati, mayhaį¹ kalyÄį¹o kittisaddo abbhuggato: Iām a giver, and I have this good reputation:

kamÄmi, yadi khattiyaparisaį¹ ā¦peā¦ yadi samaį¹aparisaį¹ visÄrado upasaį¹

kubhÅ«to. Iām a giver, I enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether itās an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics.
YÄnimÄni, bhante, bhagavatÄ sandiį¹į¹hikÄni dÄnaphalÄni akkhÄtÄni, nÄhaį¹ ettha bhagavato saddhÄya gacchÄmi. When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I donāt have to rely on faith in the Buddha,

YaƱca kho maį¹, bhante, bhagavÄ evamÄha: But when the Buddha says:
ādÄyako, sÄ«ha, dÄnapati kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti. āWhen a giverās body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā I donāt know this,
EtÄhaį¹ na jÄnÄmi, ettha ca panÄhaį¹, bhagavato saddhÄya gacchÄmÄ«āti. so I have to rely on faith in the Buddha.ā
āEvametaį¹, sÄ«ha, evametaį¹, sÄ«ha. āThatās so true, SÄ«ha! Thatās so true!
DÄyako, sÄ«ha, dÄnapati kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti. When a giverās body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā
