Sīhasenāpatisutta General Sīha

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Atha kho sÄ«ho senāpati yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho sÄ«ho senāpati bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then General SÄ«ha went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsakkā nu kho, bhante, sandiį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ dānaphalaį¹ paƱƱāpetunā€ti? ā€œSir, can you point out a fruit of giving thatā€™s apparent in the present life?ā€

ā€œTena hi, sÄ«ha, taƱƱevettha paį¹­ipucchissāmi, yathā te khameyya tathā naį¹ byākareyyāsi. ā€œWell then, SÄ«ha, Iā€™ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, What do you think, SÄ«ha?

idha dve purisāā€”Consider two people.

eko puriso assaddho maccharī kadariyo paribhāsako, eko puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato. One is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive. One is a faithful donor who loves charity.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, kaį¹ nu kho arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ anukampantā anukampeyyuį¹: Which do you think the perfected ones will show sympathy for first?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kintaį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ anukampantā anukampissanti. ā€œWhy would the perfected ones first show sympathy for the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive?

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato taį¹yeva arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ anukampantā anukampeyyuį¹ā€. Theyā€™d show sympathy first for the faithful donor who loves charity.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, kaį¹ nu kho arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamantā upasaį¹…kameyyuį¹: ā€œWhich do you think the perfected ones will first approach?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kintaį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamantā upasaį¹…kamissanti.

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato taį¹yeva arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamantā upasaį¹…kameyyuį¹ā€. ā€œTheyā€™d first approach the faithful donor who loves charity.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, kassa nu kho arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ paį¹­iggaį¹‡hantā paį¹­iggaį¹‡heyyuį¹: ā€œWhich do you think the perfected ones will receive alms from first?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kintaį¹ tassa arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ paį¹­iggaį¹‡hantā paį¹­iggaį¹‡hissanti.

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato tasseva arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ paį¹­iggaį¹‡hantā paį¹­iggaį¹‡heyyuį¹ā€. ā€œTheyā€™d receive alms first from the faithful donor who loves charity.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, kassa nu kho arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentā deseyyuį¹: ā€œWhich do you think the perfected ones will teach the Dhamma to first?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kintaį¹ tassa arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentā desessanti.

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato tasseva arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentā deseyyuį¹ā€. ā€œTheyā€™d first teach the Dhamma to the faithful donor who loves charity.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, kassa nu kho kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggaccheyya: ā€œWhich do you think would get a good reputation?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kintaį¹ tassa kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggacchissati.

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato tasseva kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggaccheyyaā€. ā€œThe faithful donor who loves charity would get a good reputation.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, ko nu kho yaį¹yadeva parisaį¹ upasaį¹…kameyya, yadi khattiyaparisaį¹ yadi brāhmaį¹‡aparisaį¹ yadi gahapatiparisaį¹ yadi samaį¹‡aparisaį¹ visārado upasaį¹…kameyya amaį¹…kubhÅ«to: ā€œWhich do you think would enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether itā€™s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kiį¹ so yaį¹yadeva parisaį¹ upasaį¹…kamissati, yadi khattiyaparisaį¹ yadi brāhmaį¹‡aparisaį¹ yadi gahapatiparisaį¹ yadi samaį¹‡aparisaį¹ visārado upasaį¹…kamissati amaį¹…kubhÅ«to. ā€œHow could the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether itā€™s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics?

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato so yaį¹yadeva parisaį¹ upasaį¹…kameyya, yadi khattiyaparisaį¹ yadi brāhmaį¹‡aparisaį¹ yadi gahapatiparisaį¹ yadi samaį¹‡aparisaį¹ visārado upasaį¹…kameyya amaį¹…kubhÅ«toā€. The faithful donor who loves charity would enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether itā€™s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, sÄ«ha, ko nu kho kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjeyya: ā€œWhen their body breaks up, after death, which do you think would be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?ā€

ā€˜yo vā so puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, yo vā so puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānaratoā€™ā€ti?

ā€œYo so, bhante, puriso assaddho maccharÄ« kadariyo paribhāsako, kiį¹ so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjissati. ā€œWhy would the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?

Yo ca kho so, bhante, puriso saddho dānapati anuppadānarato so kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjeyya. The faithful donor who loves charity would, when their body breaks up, after death, be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

Yānimāni, bhante, bhagavatā sandiį¹­į¹­hikāni dānaphalāni akkhātāni, nāhaį¹ ettha bhagavato saddhāya gacchāmi. When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I donā€™t have to rely on faith in the Buddha,

Ahampi etāni jānāmi. for I know them too.

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati, maį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ anukampantā anukampanti. Iā€™m a giver, a donor, and the perfected ones show sympathy for me first.

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati, maį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ upasaį¹…kamantā upasaį¹…kamanti. Iā€™m a giver, and the perfected ones approach me first.

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati, mayhaį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ paį¹­iggaį¹‡hantā paį¹­iggaį¹‡hanti. Iā€™m a giver, and the perfected ones receive alms from me first.

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati, mayhaį¹ arahanto paį¹­hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentā desenti. Iā€™m a giver, and the perfected ones teach me Dhamma first.

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati, mayhaį¹ kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggato: Iā€™m a giver, and I have this good reputation:

ā€˜sÄ«ho senāpati dāyako kārako saį¹…ghupaį¹­į¹­hākoā€™ti. ā€˜General SÄ«ha gives, serves, and attends on the Saį¹…gha.ā€™

Ahaį¹, bhante, dāyako dānapati yaį¹yadeva parisaį¹ upasaį¹…kamāmi, yadi khattiyaparisaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ yadi samaį¹‡aparisaį¹ visārado upasaį¹…kamāmi amaį¹…kubhÅ«to. Iā€™m a giver, I enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether itā€™s an assembly of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, or ascetics.

Yānimāni, bhante, bhagavatā sandiį¹­į¹­hikāni dānaphalāni akkhātāni, nāhaį¹ ettha bhagavato saddhāya gacchāmi. When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I donā€™t have to rely on faith in the Buddha,

Ahampi etāni jānāmi. for I know them too.

YaƱca kho maį¹, bhante, bhagavā evamāha: But when the Buddha says:

ā€˜dāyako, sÄ«ha, dānapati kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜When a giverā€™s body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€™ I donā€™t know this,

Etāhaį¹ na jānāmi, ettha ca panāhaį¹, bhagavato saddhāya gacchāmÄ«ā€ti. so I have to rely on faith in the Buddha.ā€

ā€œEvametaį¹, sÄ«ha, evametaį¹, sÄ«ha. ā€œThatā€™s so true, SÄ«ha! Thatā€™s so true!

Dāyako, sÄ«ha, dānapati kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti. When a giverā€™s body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€
