Arakkheyyasutta Nothing to Hide

ā€œCattārimāni, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni, tÄ«hi ca anupavajjo. ā€œMendicants, there are four areas where the Realized One has nothing to hide, and three ways he is irreproachable.

Katamāni cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni? What are the four areas where the Realized One has nothing to hide?

Parisuddhakāyasamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; His bodily behavior is pure.

natthi tathāgatassa kāyaduccaritaį¹ yaį¹ tathāgato rakkheyya: So the Realized One has no bodily misconduct to hide, thinking:

ā€˜mā me idaį¹ paro aƱƱāsÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Donā€™t let others find this out about me!ā€™

Parisuddhavacīsamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; His verbal behavior is pure.

natthi tathāgatassa vacÄ«duccaritaį¹ yaį¹ tathāgato rakkheyya: So the Realized One has no verbal misconduct to hide, thinking:

ā€˜mā me idaį¹ paro aƱƱāsÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Donā€™t let others find this out about me!ā€™

Parisuddhamanosamācāro, bhikkhave, tathāgato; His mental behavior is pure.

natthi tathāgatassa manoduccaritaį¹ yaį¹ tathāgato rakkheyya: So the Realized One has no mental misconduct to hide, thinking:

ā€˜mā me idaį¹ paro aƱƱāsÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Donā€™t let others find this out about me!ā€™

Parisuddhājīvo, bhikkhave, tathāgato; His livelihood is pure.

natthi tathāgatassa micchāājÄ«vo yaį¹ tathāgato rakkheyya: So the Realized One has no wrong livelihood to hide, thinking:

ā€˜mā me idaį¹ paro aƱƱāsÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜Donā€™t let others find this out about me!ā€™

Imāni cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni. These are the four areas where the Realized One has nothing to hide.

Katamehi tīhi anupavajjo? What are the three ways the Realized One is irreproachable?

Svākkhātadhammo, bhikkhave, tathāgato. The Realized One has explained the teaching well.

Tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessati: I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying:

ā€˜itipi tvaį¹ na svākkhātadhammoā€™ti. ā€˜For such and such reasons you havenā€™t explained the teaching well.ā€™

Nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi.

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

SupaƱƱattā kho pana me, bhikkhave, sāvakānaį¹ nibbānagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā. I have clearly described the practice that leads to extinguishment for my disciples.

Yathāpaį¹­ipannā mama sāvakā āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti. Practicing in accordance with this, my disciples realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessati: I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying:

Nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi.

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

Anekasatā kho pana me, bhikkhave, sāvakaparisā āsavānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti. Many hundreds in my assembly of disciples have realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Tatra vata maį¹ samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā devo vā māro vā brahmā vā koci vā lokasmiį¹ sahadhammena paį¹­icodessati: I see no reason for anyoneā€”whether ascetic, brahmin, god, Māra, or the Divinity, or anyone else in the worldā€”to legitimately scold me, saying:

ā€˜itipi te na anekasatā sāvakaparisā āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜For such and such reasons you donā€™t have many hundreds of disciples in your following who have realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and who live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€™

Nimittametaį¹, bhikkhave, na samanupassāmi.

Etamahaį¹, bhikkhave, nimittaį¹ asamanupassanto khemappatto abhayappatto vesārajjappatto viharāmi. Since I see no such reason, I live secure, fearless, and assured.

Imehi tīhi anupavajjo. These are the three ways the Realized One is irreproachable.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni, imehi ca tÄ«hi anupavajjoā€ti. These are the four areas where the Realized One has nothing to hide, and the three ways he is irreproachable.ā€
