Sunettasutta About Sunetta
āBhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, sunetto nÄma satthÄ ahosi titthakaro kÄmesu vÄ«tarÄgo. āOnce upon a time, mendicants, there was a Teacher called Sunetta. He was a religious founder and was free of desire for sensual pleasures.
Sunettassa kho pana, bhikkhave, satthuno anekÄni sÄvakasatÄni ahesuį¹. He had many hundreds of disciples.
Sunetto satthÄ sÄvakÄnaį¹ brahmalokasahabyatÄya dhammaį¹ desesi. He taught them the path to rebirth in the company of Divinity.
Ye kho pana, bhikkhave, sunettassa satthuno brahmalokasahabyatÄya dhammaį¹ desentassa cittÄni nappasÄdesuį¹ te kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjiį¹su. Those lacking confidence in Sunetta wereāwhen their body broke up, after deathāreborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Ye kho pana, bhikkhave, sunettassa satthuno brahmalokasahabyatÄya dhammaį¹ desentassa cittÄni pasÄdesuį¹ te kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjiį¹su. Those full of confidence in Sunetta wereāwhen their body broke up, after deathāreborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

ghe paduį¹į¹hacitto akkoseyya paribhÄseyya, bahuį¹ so apuƱƱaį¹ pasaveyyÄāti? If someone with malicious intent were to abuse and insult these seven teachers with their hundreds of followers, would they not create much wickedness?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āYes, sir.ā
āYo, bhikkhave, ime satta satthÄre titthakare kÄmesu vÄ«tarÄge anekasataparivÄre sasÄvakasaį¹
ghe paduį¹į¹hacitto akkoseyya paribhÄseyya, bahuį¹ so apuƱƱaį¹ pasaveyya. āThey would indeed.
Yo ekaį¹ diį¹į¹hisampannaį¹ puggalaį¹ paduį¹į¹hacitto akkosati paribhÄsati, ayaį¹ tato bahutaraį¹ apuƱƱaį¹ pasavati. But someone who abuses and insults a single person accomplished in view with malicious intent creates even more wickedness.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
NÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, ito bahiddhÄ evarÅ«piį¹ khantiį¹ vadÄmi yathÄmaį¹ sabrahmacÄrÄ«su. I say that any injury done by those outside of the Buddhist community does not compare with what is done to oneās own spiritual companions.
TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
āna no sabrahmacÄrÄ«su cittÄni paduį¹į¹hÄni bhavissantÄ«āti. āWe will have no malicious intent for our spiritual companions.ā
EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanāti. Thatās how you should train.ā
