Paį¹­hamavinayadharasutta An Expert in the Monastic Law (1st)

ā€œSattahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu vinayadharo hoti. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant with seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law.

Katamehi sattahi? What seven?

Āpattiį¹ jānāti, They know what is an offense.

anāpattiį¹ jānāti, They know what is not an offense.

lahukaį¹ āpattiį¹ jānāti, They know what is a light offense.

garukaį¹ āpattiį¹ jānāti, They know what is a serious offense.

sÄ«lavā hoti pātimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aį¹‡umattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvÄ« samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu, Theyā€™re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

catunnaį¹ jhānānaį¹ ābhicetasikānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammasukhavihārānaį¹ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«, They get the four absorptionsā€”blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mindā€”when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu vinayadharo hotÄ«ā€ti. A mendicant with these seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law.ā€
