Atha kho ÄyasmÄ upÄli yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ upÄli bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable UpÄli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āSÄdhu me, bhante, bhagavÄ saį¹
khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvÄ eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanāti. āSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iāve heard it, Iāll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā
āYe kho tvaį¹, upÄli, dhamme jÄneyyÄsi: āUpÄli, you might know that
āime dhammÄ na ekantanibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya upasamÄya abhiƱƱÄya sambodhÄya nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattantÄ«āti; certain things donāt lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
ekaį¹sena, upÄli, dhÄreyyÄsi: Categorically, you should remember these things as
āneso dhammo neso vinayo netaį¹ satthusÄsananāti. not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacherās instructions.
Ye ca kho tvaį¹, upÄli, dhamme jÄneyyÄsi: You might know that
āime dhammÄ ekantanibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya upasamÄya abhiƱƱÄya sambodhÄya nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattantÄ«āti; certain things do lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
