Satthusāsanasutta The Teacherā€™s Instructions

Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Upāli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œSādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œYe kho tvaį¹, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ā€œUpāli, you might know that

ā€˜ime dhammā na ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€™ti; certain things donā€™t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

ekaį¹sena, upāli, dhāreyyāsi: Categorically, you should remember these things as

ā€˜neso dhammo neso vinayo netaį¹ satthusāsananā€™ti. not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacherā€™s instructions.

Ye ca kho tvaį¹, upāli, dhamme jāneyyāsi: You might know that

ā€˜ime dhammā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattantÄ«ā€™ti; certain things do lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
