Paį¹­hamalokadhammasutta Worldly Conditions (1st)

ā€œAį¹­į¹­hime, bhikkhave, lokadhammā lokaį¹ anuparivattanti, loko ca aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhamme anuparivattati. ā€œMendicants, the eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around the eight worldly conditions.

Katame aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Lābho ca, alābho ca, yaso ca, ayaso ca, nindā ca, pasaį¹sā ca, sukhaƱca, dukkhaƱca. Gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, pleasure and pain.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhammā lokaį¹ anuparivattanti, loko ca ime aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhamme anuparivattatÄ«ti. These eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around these eight worldly conditions.

Lābho alābho ca yasāyaso ca, Gain and loss, fame and disgrace,

Nindā pasaį¹sā ca sukhaį¹ dukhaƱca; blame and praise, and pleasure and pain.

Ete aniccā manujesu dhammā, These qualities among people are impermanent,

Asassatā vipariį¹‡Ämadhammā. transient, and perishable.

Ete ca Ʊatvā satimā sumedho, An intelligent and mindful person knows these things,

Avekkhati vipariį¹‡Ämadhamme; seeing that theyā€™re perishable.

Iį¹­į¹­hassa dhammā na mathenti cittaį¹, Desirable things donā€™t disturb their mind,

Aniį¹­į¹­hato no paį¹­ighātameti. nor are they repelled by the undesirable.

Tassānurodhā atha vā virodhā, Both favoring and opposing

VidhÅ«pitā atthaį¹…gatā na santi; are cleared and ended, they are no more.

PadaƱca Ʊatvā virajaį¹ asokaį¹, Knowing the stainless, sorrowless state,

Sammappajānāti bhavassa pāragÅ«ā€ti. they who have gone beyond rebirth understand rightly.ā€
