Dutiyalokadhammasutta Worldly Conditions (2nd)

ā€œAį¹­į¹­hime, bhikkhave, lokadhammā lokaį¹ anuparivattanti, loko ca aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhamme anuparivattati. ā€œMendicants, the eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around the eight worldly conditions.

Katame aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Lābho ca, alābho ca, yaso ca, ayaso ca, nindā ca, pasaį¹sā ca, sukhaƱca, dukkhaƱca. Gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, pleasure and pain.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhammā lokaį¹ anuparivattanti, loko ca ime aį¹­į¹­ha lokadhamme anuparivattati. These eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around these eight worldly conditions.

Assutavato, bhikkhave, puthujjanassa uppajjati lābhopi alābhopi yasopi ayasopi nindāpi pasaį¹sāpi sukhampi dukkhampi. An unlearned ordinary person encounters gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, and pleasure and pain.

Sutavatopi, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa uppajjati lābhopi alābhopi yasopi ayasopi nindāpi pasaį¹sāpi sukhampi dukkhampi. And so does a learned noble disciple.

Tatra, bhikkhave, ko viseso ko adhippayāso kiį¹ nānākaraį¹‡aį¹ sutavato ariyasāvakassa assutavatā puthujjanenāā€ti? What, then, is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an ordinary unlearned person?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaį¹nettikā bhagavaį¹paį¹­isaraį¹‡Ä. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹­ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhave, suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œassutavato, bhikkhave, puthujjanassa uppajjati lābho. ā€œMendicants, an unlearned ordinary person encounters gain.

So na iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: They donā€™t reflect:

ā€˜uppanno kho me ayaį¹ lābho; ā€˜Iā€™ve encountered this gain.

so ca kho anicco dukkho vipariį¹‡Ämadhammoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. Itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable.ā€™ They donā€™t truly understand it.

Uppajjati alābho ā€¦peā€¦ They encounter loss ā€¦

uppajjati yaso ā€¦ fame ā€¦

uppajjati ayaso ā€¦ disgrace ā€¦

uppajjati nindā ā€¦ blame ā€¦

uppajjati pasaį¹sā ā€¦ praise ā€¦

uppajjati sukhaį¹ ā€¦ pleasure ā€¦

uppajjati dukkhaį¹. pain.

So na iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: They donā€™t reflect:

ā€˜uppannaį¹ kho me idaį¹ dukkhaį¹; ā€˜Iā€™ve encountered this pain.

taƱca kho aniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vipariį¹‡Ämadhammanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. Itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable.ā€™ They donā€™t truly understand it.

Tassa lābhopi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, alābhopi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, yasopi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, ayasopi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, nindāpi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, pasaį¹sāpi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, sukhampi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, dukkhampi cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. So gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, and pleasure and pain occupy their mind.

So uppannaį¹ lābhaį¹ anurujjhati, alābhe paį¹­ivirujjhati; They favor gain and oppose loss.

uppannaį¹ yasaį¹ anurujjhati, ayase paį¹­ivirujjhati; They favor fame and oppose disgrace.

uppannaį¹ pasaį¹saį¹ anurujjhati, nindāya paį¹­ivirujjhati; They favor praise and oppose blame.

uppannaį¹ sukhaį¹ anurujjhati, dukkhe paį¹­ivirujjhati. They favor pleasure and oppose pain.

So evaį¹ anurodhavirodhasamāpanno na parimuccati jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. Being so full of favoring and opposing, theyā€™re not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

ā€˜Na parimuccati dukkhasmāā€™ti vadāmi. Theyā€™re not freed from suffering, I say.

Sutavato ca kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa uppajjati lābho. A learned noble disciple encounters gain.

So iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: They reflect:

ā€˜uppanno kho me ayaį¹ lābho; ā€˜Iā€™ve encountered this gain.

so ca kho anicco dukkho vipariį¹‡Ämadhammoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable.ā€™ They truly understand it.

Uppajjati alābho ā€¦peā€¦ They encounter loss ā€¦

uppajjati yaso ā€¦ fame ā€¦

uppajjati ayaso ā€¦ disgrace ā€¦

uppajjati nindā ā€¦ blame ā€¦

uppajjati pasaį¹sā ā€¦ praise ā€¦

uppajjati sukhaį¹ ā€¦ pleasure ā€¦

uppajjati dukkhaį¹. pain.

So iti paį¹­isaƱcikkhati: They reflect:

ā€˜uppannaį¹ kho me idaį¹ dukkhaį¹; ā€˜Iā€™ve encountered this pain.

Tassa lābhopi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, alābhopi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, yasopi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, ayasopi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, nindāpi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, pasaį¹sāpi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, sukhampi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati, dukkhampi cittaį¹ na pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. So gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, and pleasure and pain donā€™t occupy their mind.

So uppannaį¹ lābhaį¹ nānurujjhati, alābhe nappaį¹­ivirujjhati; They donā€™t favor gain or oppose loss.

uppannaį¹ yasaį¹ nānurujjhati, ayase nappaį¹­ivirujjhati; They donā€™t favor fame or oppose disgrace.

uppannaį¹ pasaį¹saį¹ nānurujjhati, nindāya nappaį¹­ivirujjhati; They donā€™t favor praise or oppose blame.

uppannaį¹ sukhaį¹ nānurujjhati, dukkhe nappaį¹­ivirujjhati. They donā€™t favor pleasure or oppose pain.

So evaį¹ anurodhavirodhavippahÄ«no parimuccati jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. Having given up favoring and opposing, theyā€™re freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

ā€˜Parimuccati dukkhasmāā€™ti vadāmi. Theyā€™re freed from suffering, I say.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, viseso ayaį¹ adhippayāso idaį¹ nānākaraį¹‡aį¹ sutavato ariyasāvakassa assutavatā puthujjanenāti. This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person.

Lābho alābho ca yasāyaso ca, Gain and loss, fame and disgrace,

Nindā pasaį¹sā ca sukhaį¹ dukhaƱca; blame and praise, and pleasure and pain.

Ete aniccā manujesu dhammā, These qualities among people are impermanent,

Asassatā vipariį¹‡Ämadhammā. transient, and perishable.

Ete ca Ʊatvā satimā sumedho, An intelligent and mindful person knows these things,

Avekkhati vipariį¹‡Ämadhamme; seeing that theyā€™re perishable.

Iį¹­į¹­hassa dhammā na mathenti cittaį¹, Desirable things donā€™t disturb their mind,

Aniį¹­į¹­hato no paį¹­ighātameti. nor are they repelled by the undesirable.

Tassānurodhā atha vā virodhā, Both favoring and opposing

VidhÅ«pitā atthaį¹…gatā na santi; are cleared and ended, they are no more.

PadaƱca Ʊatvā virajaį¹ asokaį¹, Knowing the stainless, sorrowless state,

Sammappajānāti bhavassa pāragÅ«ā€ti. they who have gone beyond rebirth understand rightly.ā€
