āākulaputtoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. āMendicants, you could rightly call Nanda āGentlemanā,
āBalavÄāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. āstrongā,
āPÄsÄdikoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. ālovelyā,
āTibbarÄgoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. and ālustfulā.
KimaƱƱatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvÄro, bhojane mattaĆ±Ć±Å«, jÄgariyaį¹ anuyutto, satisampajaƱƱena samannÄgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ carituį¹. How could he live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness?
Tatridaį¹, bhikkhave, nandassa indriyesu guttadvÄratÄya hoti. This is how Nanda guards the sense doors.
Sace, bhikkhave, nandassa puratthimÄ disÄ ÄloketabbÄ hoti, sabbaį¹ cetasÄ samannÄharitvÄ nando puratthimaį¹ disaį¹ Äloketi: If he has to look to the east, he wholeheartedly concentrates before looking, thinking:
āevaį¹ me puratthimaį¹ disaį¹ Älokayato nÄbhijjhÄdomanassÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ anvÄssavissantÄ«āti. āWhen I look to the east, bad, unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure will not overwhelm me.ā

āevaį¹ me anudisaį¹ anuvilokayato nÄbhijjhÄdomanassÄ pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ anvÄssavissantÄ«āti. āWhen I survey the intermediate directions, bad, unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure will not overwhelm me.ā

khÄ yoniso ÄhÄraį¹ ÄhÄreti: Nanda reflects rationally on the food he eats:
āneva davÄya na madÄya na maį¹įøanÄya na vibhÅ«sanÄya, yÄvadeva imassa kÄyassa į¹hitiyÄ yÄpanÄya vihiį¹sÅ«paratiyÄ brahmacariyÄnuggahÄya iti purÄį¹aƱca vedanaį¹ paį¹ihaį¹
khÄmi, navaƱca vedanaį¹ na uppÄdessÄmi, yÄtrÄ ca me bhavissati anavajjatÄ ca phÄsuvihÄro cÄāti. āNot for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice. In this way, I shall put an end to old discomfort and not give rise to new discomfort, and I will have the means to keep going, blamelessness, and a comfortable abiding.ā

kamena nisajjÄya Ävaraį¹Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; Nanda practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying his mind from obstacles.
rattiyÄ paį¹hamaį¹ yÄmaį¹ caį¹
kamena nisajjÄya Ävaraį¹Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; In the first watch of the night, he continues to practice walking and sitting meditation.
rattiyÄ majjhimaį¹ yÄmaį¹ dakkhiį¹ena passena sÄ«haseyyaį¹ kappeti pÄde pÄdaį¹ accÄdhÄya sato sampajÄno uį¹į¹hÄnasaƱƱaį¹ manasi karitvÄ; In the middle watch, he lies down in the lionās postureāon the right side, placing one foot on top of the otherāmindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.
