Nandasutta Nanda

ā€œā€˜kulaputtoā€™ti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. ā€œMendicants, you could rightly call Nanda ā€˜Gentlemanā€™,

ā€˜Balavāā€™ti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. ā€˜strongā€™,

ā€˜Pāsādikoā€™ti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. ā€˜lovelyā€™,

ā€˜Tibbarāgoā€™ti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. and ā€˜lustfulā€™.

KimaƱƱatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvāro, bhojane mattaĆ±Ć±Å«, jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto, satisampajaƱƱena samannāgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ carituį¹. How could he live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness?

Tatridaį¹, bhikkhave, nandassa indriyesu guttadvāratāya hoti. This is how Nanda guards the sense doors.

Sace, bhikkhave, nandassa puratthimā disā āloketabbā hoti, sabbaį¹ cetasā samannāharitvā nando puratthimaį¹ disaį¹ āloketi: If he has to look to the east, he wholeheartedly concentrates before looking, thinking:

ā€˜evaį¹ me puratthimaį¹ disaį¹ ālokayato nābhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssavissantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜When I look to the east, bad, unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure will not overwhelm me.ā€™

Itiha tattha sampajāno hoti. In this way heā€™s aware of the situation.

Sace, bhikkhave, nandassa pacchimā disā āloketabbā hoti ā€¦peā€¦ If he has to look to the west ā€¦

uttarā disā āloketabbā hoti ā€¦ north ā€¦

dakkhiį¹‡Ä disā āloketabbā hoti ā€¦ south ā€¦

uddhaį¹ ulloketabbā hoti ā€¦ up ā€¦

adho oloketabbā hoti ā€¦ down ā€¦

anudisā anuviloketabbā hoti, sabbaį¹ cetasā samannāharitvā nando anudisaį¹ anuviloketi: If he has to survey the intermediate directions, he wholeheartedly concentrates before looking, thinking:

ā€˜evaį¹ me anudisaį¹ anuvilokayato nābhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssavissantÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜When I survey the intermediate directions, bad, unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure will not overwhelm me.ā€™

Itiha tattha sampajāno hoti. In this way heā€™s aware of the situation.

Idaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, nandassa indriyesu guttadvāratāya hoti. This is how Nanda guards the sense doors.

Tatridaį¹, bhikkhave, nandassa bhojane mattaƱƱutāya hoti. This is how Nanda eats in moderation.

Idha, bhikkhave, nando paį¹­isaį¹…khā yoniso āhāraį¹ āhāreti: Nanda reflects rationally on the food he eats:

ā€˜neva davāya na madāya na maį¹‡įøanāya na vibhÅ«sanāya, yāvadeva imassa kāyassa į¹­hitiyā yāpanāya vihiį¹sÅ«paratiyā brahmacariyānuggahāya iti purāį¹‡aƱca vedanaį¹ paį¹­ihaį¹…khāmi, navaƱca vedanaį¹ na uppādessāmi, yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cāā€™ti. ā€˜Not for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice. In this way, I shall put an end to old discomfort and not give rise to new discomfort, and I will have the means to keep going, blamelessness, and a comfortable abiding.ā€™

Idaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, nandassa bhojane mattaƱƱutāya hoti. This is how Nanda eats in moderation.

Tatridaį¹, bhikkhave, nandassa jāgariyānuyogasmiį¹ hoti. This is how Nanda is committed to wakefulness.

Idha, bhikkhave, nando divasaį¹ caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; Nanda practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying his mind from obstacles.

rattiyā paį¹­hamaį¹ yāmaį¹ caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti; In the first watch of the night, he continues to practice walking and sitting meditation.

rattiyā majjhimaį¹ yāmaį¹ dakkhiį¹‡ena passena sÄ«haseyyaį¹ kappeti pāde pādaį¹ accādhāya sato sampajāno uį¹­į¹­hānasaƱƱaį¹ manasi karitvā; In the middle watch, he lies down in the lionā€™s postureā€”on the right side, placing one foot on top of the otherā€”mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.

rattiyā pacchimaį¹ yāmaį¹ paccuį¹­į¹­hāya caį¹…kamena nisajjāya āvaraį¹‡Ä«yehi dhammehi cittaį¹ parisodheti. In the last watch, he gets up and continues to practice walking and sitting meditation, purifying his mind from obstacles.

Idha, bhikkhave, nandassa viditā vedanā uppajjanti, viditā upaį¹­į¹­hahanti, viditā abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti; Nanda knows feelings as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.

viditā saƱƱā ā€¦peā€¦ He knows perceptions as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.

viditā vitakkā ā€¦peā€¦ abbhatthaį¹ gacchanti. He knows thoughts as they arise, as they remain, and as they go away.

Idaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, nandassa satisampajaƱƱasmiį¹ hoti. This is how Nanda has mindfulness and situational awareness.

KimaƱƱatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvāro, bhojane mattaĆ±Ć±Å«, jāgariyaį¹ anuyutto, satisampajaƱƱena samannāgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ caritunā€ti.
