Malasutta Stains

ā€œAį¹­į¹­himāni, bhikkhave, malāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these eight stains.

Katamāni aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Asajjhāyamalā, bhikkhave, mantā; Not reciting is the stain of hymns.

anuį¹­į¹­hānamalā, bhikkhave, gharā; Neglect is the stain of houses.

malaį¹, bhikkhave, vaį¹‡į¹‡assa kosajjaį¹; Laziness is the stain of beauty.

pamādo, bhikkhave, rakkhato malaį¹; Negligence is a guardā€™s stain.

malaį¹, bhikkhave, itthiyā duccaritaį¹; Misconduct is a womanā€™s stain.

maccheraį¹, bhikkhave, dadato malaį¹; Stinginess is a giverā€™s stain.

malā, bhikkhave, pāpakā akusalā dhammā asmiį¹ loke paramhi ca; Bad, unskillful qualities are a stain in this world and the next.

tato, bhikkhave, malā malataraį¹ avijjā paramaį¹ malaį¹. Worse than any of these is ignorance, the worst stain of all.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha malānÄ«ti. These are the eight stains.

Malitthiyā duccaritaį¹, Misconduct is a womanā€™s stain.

maccheraį¹ dadato malaį¹; A giverā€™s stain is stinginess.

Malā ve pāpakā dhammā, Bad qualities are a stain

asmiį¹ loke paramhi ca; in this world and the next.

Tato malā malataraį¹, But a worse stain than these

avijjā paramaį¹ malanā€ti. is ignorance, the worst stain of all.ā€
