Uposathasutta Sabbath

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of Migāraā€™s mother in the Eastern Monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe bhikkhusaį¹…ghaparivuto nisinno hoti. Now, at that time it was the sabbath, and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by the Saį¹…gha of monks.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante paį¹­hame yāme, uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā ekaį¹saį¹ uttarāsaį¹…gaį¹ karitvā yena bhagavā tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹‡Ämetvā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: And then, as the night was getting late, in the first watch of the night, Venerable Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said,

ā€œabhikkantā, bhante, ratti, nikkhanto paį¹­hamo yāmo, ciranisinno bhikkhusaį¹…gho. ā€œSir, the night is getting late. It is the first watch of the night, and the Saį¹…gha of monks has been sitting long.

Uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pātimokkhanā€ti. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavā tuį¹‡hÄ« ahosi. But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.

Dutiyampi kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante majjhime yāme, uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā ekaį¹saį¹ uttarāsaį¹…gaį¹ karitvā yena bhagavā tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹‡Ämetvā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: For a second time, as the night was getting late, in the middle watch of the night, Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said,

ā€œabhikkantā, bhante, ratti, nikkhanto majjhimo yāmo, ciranisinno bhikkhusaį¹…gho. ā€œSir, the night is getting late. It is the middle watch of the night, and the Saį¹…gha of monks has been sitting long.

Uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pātimokkhanā€ti. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.ā€

Dutiyampi kho bhagavā tuį¹‡hÄ« ahosi. But for a second time the Buddha kept silent.

Tatiyampi kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante pacchime yāme, uddhaste aruį¹‡e, nandimukhiyā rattiyā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā ekaį¹saį¹ uttarāsaį¹…gaį¹ karitvā yena bhagavā tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹‡Ämetvā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: For a third time, as the night was getting late, in the last watch of the night, as dawn stirred, bringing joy to the night, Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said,

ā€œabhikkantā, bhante, ratti, nikkhanto pacchimo yāmo, uddhastaį¹ aruį¹‡aį¹, nandimukhÄ« ratti; ā€œSir, the night is getting late. It is the last watch of the night and dawn stirs, bringing joy to the night.

ciranisinno bhikkhusaį¹…gho. And the Saį¹…gha has been sitting long.

Uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pātimokkhanā€ti. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.ā€

ā€œAparisuddhā, ānanda, parisāā€ti. ā€œÄ€nanda, the assembly is not pure.ā€

Atha kho āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa etadahosi: Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna thought,

ā€œkaį¹ nu kho bhagavā puggalaį¹ sandhāya evamāha: ā€œWho is the Buddha talking about?ā€

ā€˜aparisuddhā, ānanda, parisāā€™ā€ti?

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno sabbāvantaį¹ bhikkhusaį¹…ghaį¹ cetasā ceto paricca manasākāsi. Then he focused on comprehending the minds of everyone in the Saį¹…gha.

Addasā kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ puggalaį¹ dussÄ«laį¹ pāpadhammaį¹ asuciį¹ saį¹…kassarasamācāraį¹ paį¹­icchannakammantaį¹ assamaį¹‡aį¹ samaį¹‡apaį¹­iƱƱaį¹ abrahmacāriį¹ brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱaį¹ antopÅ«tiį¹ avassutaį¹ kasambujātaį¹ majjhe bhikkhusaį¹…ghassa nisinnaį¹; He saw that unethical person, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerā€”though claiming to be oneā€”rotten inside, festering, and depraved, sitting in the middle of the Saį¹…gha.

disvāna uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yena so puggalo tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā taį¹ puggalaį¹ etadavoca: When he saw him he got up from his seat, went up to him and said,

ā€œuį¹­į¹­hehāvuso, diį¹­į¹­hosi bhagavatā. ā€œGet up, reverend. The Buddha has seen you.

Natthi te bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ saį¹vāsoā€ti. You canā€™t live in communion with the monks.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, so puggalo tuį¹‡hÄ« ahosi. But when he said this, that person kept silent.

Dutiyampi kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ puggalaį¹ etadavoca: For a second time

ā€œuį¹­į¹­hehāvuso, diį¹­į¹­hosi bhagavatā.

Natthi te bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ saį¹vāsoā€ti.

Dutiyampi kho so puggalo tuį¹‡hÄ« ahosi.

Tatiyampi kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ puggalaį¹ etadavoca: and a third time,

ā€œuį¹­į¹­hehāvuso, diį¹­į¹­hosi bhagavatā. he asked that monk to leave.

Natthi te bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ saį¹vāsoā€ti.

Tatiyampi kho so puggalo tuį¹‡hÄ« ahosi. But for a third time that person kept silent.

Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taį¹ puggalaį¹ bāhāyaį¹ gahetvā bahidvārakoį¹­į¹­hakā nikkhāmetvā sÅ«cighaį¹­ikaį¹ datvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna took that person by the arm, ejected him out the gate, and bolted the door. Then he went up to the Buddha, and said to him,

ā€œnikkhāmito so, bhante, puggalo mayā. ā€œI have ejected that person.

Parisuddhā parisā. The assembly is pure.

Uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pātimokkhanā€ti. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.ā€

ā€œAcchariyaį¹, moggallāna, abbhutaį¹, moggallāna. ā€œItā€™s incredible, Moggallāna, itā€™s amazing,

Yāva bāhā gahaį¹‡Äpi nāma so moghapuriso āgamissatÄ«ā€ti. how that futile man waited to be taken by the arm!ā€

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to the monks:

ā€œtumheva dāni, bhikkhave, uposathaį¹ kareyyātha, pātimokkhaį¹ uddiseyyātha. ā€œNow, monks, you should perform the sabbath and recite the monastic code.

Na dānāhaį¹, bhikkhave, ajjatagge uposathaį¹ karissāmi, pātimokkhaį¹ uddisissāmi. From this day forth, I will not perform the sabbath or recite the monastic code.

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, bhikkhave, anavakāso yaį¹ tathāgato aparisuddhāya parisāya pātimokkhaį¹ uddiseyya. Itā€™s impossible, monks, it canā€™t happen that a Realized One could recite the monastic code in an impure assembly.

Aį¹­į¹­hime, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde acchariyā abbhutā dhammā, ye disvā disvā asurā mahāsamudde abhiramanti. Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things the titans love the ocean.

Katame aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Mahāsamuddo, bhikkhave, anupubbaninno anupubbapoį¹‡o anupubbapabbhāro, na āyatakeneva papāto. The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice.

Yampi, bhikkhave, mahāsamuddo anupubbaninno anupubbapoį¹‡o anupubbapabbhāro, na āyatakeneva papāto;

ayaį¹, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde paį¹­hamo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo, yaį¹ disvā disvā asurā mahāsamudde abhiramanti (yathā purime tathā vitthāro.) This is the first thing the titans love about the ocean.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, mahāsamuddo mahataį¹ bhÅ«tānaį¹ āvāso. Tatrime bhÅ«tāā€”timi timiį¹…galo timirapiį¹…galo asurā nāgā gandhabbā. Vasanti mahāsamudde yojanasatikāpi attabhāvā ā€¦peā€¦ paƱcayojanasatikāpi attabhāvā. Furthermore, many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, titans, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long.

Yampi, bhikkhave, mahāsamuddo mahataį¹ bhÅ«tānaį¹ āvāso; tatrime bhÅ«tāā€”timi timiį¹…galo timirapiį¹…galo asurā nāgā gandhabbā; vasanti mahāsamudde yojanasatikāpi attabhāvā ā€¦peā€¦ paƱcayojanasatikāpi attabhāvā;

ayaį¹, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde aį¹­į¹­hamo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo, yaį¹ disvā disvā asurā mahāsamudde abhiramanti. This is the eighth thing the titans love about the ocean.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde aį¹­į¹­ha acchariyā abbhutā dhammā, yaį¹ disvā disvā asurā mahāsamudde abhiramanti. Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things the titans love the ocean.

Evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye acchariyā abbhutā dhammā, ye disvā disvā bhikkhÅ« imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye abhiramanti. In the same way, seeing eight incredible and amazing things, mendicants, the mendicants love this teaching and training.

Katame aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahāsamuddo anupubbaninno anupubbapoį¹‡o anupubbapabbhāro, na āyatakeneva papāto; The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye anupubbasikkhā anupubbakiriyā anupubbapaį¹­ipadā, na āyatakeneva aƱƱāpaį¹­ivedho. In the same way in this teaching and training the penetration to enlightenment comes from gradual training, progress, and practice, not abruptly.

Yampi, bhikkhave, imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye anupubbasikkhā anupubbakiriyā anupubbapaį¹­ipadā, na āyatakeneva aƱƱāpaį¹­ivedho;

ayaį¹, bhikkhave, imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye paį¹­hamo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo, yaį¹ disvā disvā bhikkhÅ« imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye abhiramanti ā€¦peā€¦ This is the first thing the mendicants love about this teaching and training. ā€¦

seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahāsamuddo mahataį¹ bhÅ«tānaį¹ āvāso; tatrime bhÅ«tāā€”timi timiį¹…galo timirapiį¹…galo asurā nāgā gandhabbā, vasanti mahāsamudde yojanasatikāpi attabhāvā ā€¦peā€¦ paƱcayojanasatikāpi attabhāvā; Many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, titans, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long.

evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, ayaį¹ dhammavinayo mahataį¹ bhÅ«tānaį¹ āvāso. Tatrime bhÅ«tāā€”sotāpanno sotāpattiphalasacchikiriyāya paį¹­ipanno ā€¦peā€¦ arahā arahattāya paį¹­ipanno. In the same way, great beings live in this teaching and training, and these are those beings. The stream-enterer and the one practicing to realize the fruit of stream-entry. The once-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of once-return. The non-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of non-return. The perfected one, and the one practicing for perfection.

Yampi, bhikkhave, ayaį¹ dhammavinayo mahataį¹ bhÅ«tānaį¹ āvāso; tatrime bhÅ«tāā€”sotāpanno sotāpattiphalasacchikiriyāya paį¹­ipanno ā€¦peā€¦ arahā arahattāya paį¹­ipanno;

ayaį¹, bhikkhave, imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye aį¹­į¹­hamo acchariyo abbhuto dhammo, yaį¹ disvā disvā bhikkhÅ« imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye abhiramanti. This is the eighth thing the mendicants love about this teaching and training.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye aį¹­į¹­ha acchariyā abbhutā dhammā, ye disvā disvā bhikkhÅ« imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye abhiramantÄ«ā€ti. Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things, the mendicants love this teaching and training.ā€

VeraƱjo sÄ«ho ājaƱƱaį¹,

khaįø·uį¹…kena malāni ca;

DÅ«teyyaį¹ dve ca bandhanā,

pahārādo uposathoti.
