Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œkati nu kho, sāriputta, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: ā€œSāriputta, how many powers does a mendicant who has ended the defilements have that qualify them to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ā€ti? ā€˜My defilements have endedā€™?ā€

ā€œAį¹­į¹­ha, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: ā€œSir, a mendicant who has ended the defilements has eight powers that qualify them to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Katamāni aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Idha, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saį¹…khārā yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­hā honti. Firstly, a mendicant with defilements ended has clearly seen with right wisdom all conditions as truly impermanent.

Yampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saį¹…khārā yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­hā honti, idampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: This is a power that a mendicant who has ended the defilements relies on to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno aį¹…gārakāsÅ«pamā kāmā yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­hā honti. Furthermore, a mendicant with defilements ended has clearly seen with right wisdom that sensual pleasures are truly like a pit of glowing coals.

Yampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno aį¹…gārakāsÅ«pamā kāmā yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­hā honti, idampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: This is a power that a mendicant who has ended the defilements relies on to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti vivekapoį¹‡aį¹ vivekapabbhāraį¹ vivekaį¹­į¹­haį¹ nekkhammābhirataį¹ byantibhÅ«taį¹ sabbaso āsavaį¹­į¹­hāniyehi dhammehi. Furthermore, the mind of a mendicant with defilements ended slants, slopes, and inclines to seclusion. Theyā€™re withdrawn, loving renunciation, and have totally eliminated defiling influences.

Yampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaį¹ cittaį¹ hoti vivekapoį¹‡aį¹ vivekapabbhāraį¹ vivekaį¹­į¹­haį¹ nekkhammābhirataį¹ byantibhÅ«taį¹ sabbaso āsavaį¹­į¹­hāniyehi dhammehi, idampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: This is a power that a mendicant who has ended the defilements relies on to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā. Furthermore, a mendicant with defilements ended has well developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Yampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: This is a power that a mendicant who has ended the defilements relies on to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā ā€¦peā€¦ Furthermore, a mendicant with defilements ended has well developed the four bases of psychic power ā€¦

paƱcindriyāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni ā€¦peā€¦ the five faculties ā€¦

satta bojjhaį¹…gā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā ā€¦peā€¦ the seven awakening factors ā€¦

ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito. the noble eightfold path.

Yampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito, idampi, bhante, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: This is a power that a mendicant who has ended the defilements relies on to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™

Imāni kho, bhante, aį¹­į¹­ha khÄ«į¹‡Äsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti: A mendicant who has ended the defilements has these eight powers that qualify them to claim:

ā€˜khÄ«į¹‡Ä me āsavāā€™ā€ti. ā€˜My defilements have ended.ā€™ā€
