Paį¹­hamadānasutta Giving (1st)

ā€œAį¹­į¹­himāni, bhikkhave, dānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these eight gifts.

Katamāni aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Āsajja dānaį¹ deti, A person might give a gift after insulting the recipient.

bhayā dānaį¹ deti, Or they give out of fear.

ā€˜adāsi meā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜They gave to me.ā€™

ā€˜dassati meā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜Theyā€™ll give to me.ā€™

ā€˜sāhu dānanā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜Itā€™s good to give.ā€™

ā€˜ahaį¹ pacāmi, ime na pacanti; nārahāmi pacanto apacantānaį¹ dānaį¹ adātunā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜I cook, they donā€™t. It wouldnā€™t be right for me to not give to them.ā€™

ā€˜imaį¹ me dānaį¹ dadato kalyāį¹‡o kittisaddo abbhuggacchatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜By giving this gift Iā€™ll get a good reputation.ā€™

cittālaį¹…kāracittaparikkhāratthaį¹ dānaį¹ deti. Or they give thinking, ā€˜This is an adornment and requisite for the mind.ā€™

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha dānānÄ«ā€ti. These are the eight gifts.ā€
