Dānavatthusutta Reasons to Give

ā€œAį¹­į¹­himāni, bhikkhave, dānavatthÅ«ni. ā€œMendicants, there are these eight grounds for giving.

Katamāni aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Chandā dānaį¹ deti, dosā dānaį¹ deti, mohā dānaį¹ deti, bhayā dānaį¹ deti, ā€˜dinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ pitupitāmahehi, nārahāmi porāį¹‡aį¹ kulavaį¹saį¹ hāpetunā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, ā€˜imāhaį¹ dānaį¹ datvā kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjissāmÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, ā€˜imaį¹ me dānaį¹ dadato cittaį¹ pasÄ«dati, attamanatā somanassaį¹ upajāyatÄ«ā€™ti dānaį¹ deti, cittālaį¹…kāracittaparikkhāratthaį¹ dānaį¹ deti. A person might give a gift out of favoritism or hostility or stupidity or cowardice. Or they give thinking, ā€˜Giving was practiced by my father and my fatherā€™s father. It would not be right for me to abandon this family tradition.ā€™ Or they give thinking, ā€˜After Iā€™ve given this gift, when my body breaks up, after death, Iā€™ll be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€™ Or they give thinking, ā€˜When giving this gift my mind becomes clear, and I become happy and joyful.ā€™ Or they give a gift thinking, ā€˜This is an adornment and requisite for the mind.ā€™

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha dānavatthÅ«nÄ«ā€ti. These are the eight grounds for giving.ā€
