DÄnÅ«papattisutta Rebirth by Giving
āAį¹į¹himÄ, bhikkhave, dÄnÅ«papattiyo. āMendicants, there are these eight rebirths by giving.
KatamÄ aį¹į¹ha? What eight?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco dÄnaį¹ deti samaį¹assa vÄ brÄhmaį¹assa vÄ annaį¹ pÄnaį¹ vatthaį¹ yÄnaį¹ mÄlÄgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyÄvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. First, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.
So yaį¹ deti taį¹ paccÄsÄ«sati. Whatever they give they expect back.
So passati khattiyamahÄsÄle vÄ brÄhmaį¹amahÄsÄle vÄ gahapatimahÄsÄle vÄ paƱcahi kÄmaguį¹ehi samappite samaį¹
gÄ«bhÅ«te paricÄrayamÄne. They see a well-to-do aristocrat or brahmin or householder amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation.
Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to them:
āaho vatÄhaį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä khattiyamahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹amahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ gahapatimahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanāti. āIf only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders!ā
So taį¹ cittaį¹ dahati, taį¹ cittaį¹ adhiį¹į¹hÄti, taį¹ cittaį¹ bhÄveti. They settle on that thought, stabilize it, and develop it.
Tassa taį¹ cittaį¹ hÄ«ne vimuttaį¹, uttari abhÄvitaį¹, tatrÅ«papattiyÄ saį¹vattati. As theyāve settled for less and not developed further, their thought leads to rebirth there.
KÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä khattiyamahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹amahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ gahapatimahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders.
TaƱca kho sÄ«lavato vadÄmi, no dussÄ«lassa. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical.
Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavato cetopaį¹idhi visuddhattÄ. The heartās wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity.

ImÄ kho, bhikkhave, aį¹į¹ha dÄnÅ«papattiyoāti. These are the eight rebirths by giving.ā
