Dānūpapattisutta Rebirth by Giving

ā€œAį¹­į¹­himā, bhikkhave, dānÅ«papattiyo. ā€œMendicants, there are these eight rebirths by giving.

Katamā aį¹­į¹­ha? What eight?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco dānaį¹ deti samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā annaį¹ pānaį¹ vatthaį¹ yānaį¹ mālāgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyāvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. First, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

So yaį¹ deti taį¹ paccāsÄ«sati. Whatever they give they expect back.

So passati khattiyamahāsāle vā brāhmaį¹‡amahāsāle vā gahapatimahāsāle vā paƱcahi kāmaguį¹‡ehi samappite samaį¹…gÄ«bhÅ«te paricārayamāne. They see a well-to-do aristocrat or brahmin or householder amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to them:

ā€˜aho vatāhaį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä khattiyamahāsālānaį¹ vā brāhmaį¹‡amahāsālānaį¹ vā gahapatimahāsālānaį¹ vā sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanā€™ti. ā€˜If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders!ā€™

So taį¹ cittaį¹ dahati, taį¹ cittaį¹ adhiį¹­į¹­hāti, taį¹ cittaį¹ bhāveti. They settle on that thought, stabilize it, and develop it.

Tassa taį¹ cittaį¹ hÄ«ne vimuttaį¹, uttari abhāvitaį¹, tatrÅ«papattiyā saį¹vattati. As theyā€™ve settled for less and not developed further, their thought leads to rebirth there.

Kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä khattiyamahāsālānaį¹ vā brāhmaį¹‡amahāsālānaį¹ vā gahapatimahāsālānaį¹ vā sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders.

TaƱca kho sīlavato vadāmi, no dussīlassa. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical.

Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavato cetopaį¹‡idhi visuddhattā. The heartā€™s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco dānaį¹ deti samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā annaį¹ pānaį¹ vatthaį¹ yānaį¹ mālāgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyāvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. Next, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins ā€¦

So yaį¹ deti taį¹ paccāsÄ«sati. Whatever they give they expect back.

Tassa sutaį¹ hoti: And theyā€™ve heard:

ā€˜cātumahārājikā devā dÄ«ghāyukā vaį¹‡į¹‡avanto sukhabahulāā€™ti. ā€˜The gods of the four great kings are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā€™

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to them:

ā€˜aho vatāhaį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä cātumahārājikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanā€™ti. ā€˜If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods of the four great kings!ā€™ ā€¦

nimmānaratÄ« devā ā€¦ ā€˜The gods who love to imagine ā€¦ā€™

paranimmitavasavattÄ« devā dÄ«ghāyukā vaį¹‡į¹‡avanto sukhabahulāti. ā€˜The gods who control what is imagined by others are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā€™

Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sÄ«lavato cetopaį¹‡idhi vÄ«tarāgattā. The heartā€™s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their freedom from desire.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha dānÅ«papattiyoā€ti. These are the eight rebirths by giving.ā€
