PuƱƱakiriyavatthusutta Grounds for Making Merit

ā€œTÄ«į¹‡imāni, bhikkhave, puƱƱakiriyavatthÅ«ni. ā€œMendicants, there are these three grounds for making merit.

Katamāni tÄ«į¹‡i? What three?

Dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu, bhāvanāmayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu. Giving, ethical conduct, and meditation are all grounds for making merit.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu parittaį¹ kataį¹ hoti, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu parittaį¹ kataį¹ hoti, bhāvanāmayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ nābhisambhoti. First, someone has practiced a little giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit, but they havenā€™t got as far as meditation as a ground for making merit.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä manussadobhagyaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn among disadvantaged humans.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekaccassa dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu mattaso kataį¹ hoti, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthu mattaso kataį¹ hoti, bhāvanāmayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ nābhisambhoti. Next, someone has practiced a moderate amount of giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit, but they havenā€™t got as far as meditation as a ground for making merit.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä manussasobhagyaį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn among well-off humans.

Next, someone has practiced a lot of giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit, but they havenā€™t got as far as meditation as a ground for making merit.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä cātumahārājikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods of the four great kings.

Tatra, bhikkhave, cattāro mahārājāno dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, cātumahārājike deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hantiā€”There, the four great kings themselves have practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. So they surpass them in ten respects:

dibbena āyunā, dibbena vaį¹‡į¹‡ena, dibbena sukhena, dibbena yasena, dibbena ādhipateyyena, dibbehi rÅ«pehi, dibbehi saddehi, dibbehi gandhehi, dibbehi rasehi, dibbehi phoį¹­į¹­habbehi. heavenly lifespan, beauty, happiness, glory, sovereignty, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.

Tatra, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā tāvatiį¹se deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hātiā€”There, Sakka, lord of gods, has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. Tatra, bhikkhave, suyāmo devaputto dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, yāme deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hātiā€”There, the god Suyāma has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. Tatra, bhikkhave, santusito devaputto dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, tusite deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hātiā€”There, the god Santusita has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. Tatra, bhikkhave, sunimmito devaputto dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, nimmānaratÄ«deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hātiā€”There, the god Sunimmita has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. Tatra, bhikkhave, vasavattÄ« devaputto dānamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, sÄ«lamayaį¹ puƱƱakiriyavatthuį¹ atirekaį¹ karitvā, paranimmitavasavattÄ«deve dasahi į¹­hānehi adhigaį¹‡hātiā€”There, the god VasavattÄ« has practiced giving and ethical conduct as grounds for making merit to a greater degree than the other gods. So he surpasses them in ten respects:
