Abhisandasutta Overflowing Merit
āAį¹į¹hime, bhikkhave, puƱƱÄbhisandÄ kusalÄbhisandÄ sukhassÄhÄrÄ sovaggikÄ sukhavipÄkÄ saggasaį¹vattanikÄ, iį¹į¹hÄya kantÄya manÄpÄya hitÄya sukhÄya saį¹vattanti. āMendicants, there are these eight kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti. Firstly, a noble disciple has gone for refuge to the Buddha.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo puƱƱÄbhisando kusalÄbhisando sukhassÄhÄro sovaggiko sukhavipÄko saggasaį¹vattaniko, iį¹į¹hÄya kantÄya manÄpÄya hitÄya sukhÄya saį¹vattati. This is the first kind of overflowing merit ā¦

kiyissanti, appaį¹ikuį¹į¹hÄni samaį¹ehi brÄhmaį¹ehi viĆ±Ć±Å«hi. Mendicants, these five gifts are great, primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. Theyāre not being corrupted now nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins donāt look down on them.

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako pÄį¹ÄtipÄtaį¹ pahÄya pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti. Firstly, a noble disciple gives up killing living creatures.
PÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako aparimÄį¹Änaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ abhayaį¹ deti, averaį¹ deti, abyÄbajjhaį¹ deti. By so doing they give to countless sentient beings the gift of freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will.
AparimÄį¹Änaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ abhayaį¹ datvÄ averaį¹ datvÄ abyÄbajjhaį¹ datvÄ aparimÄį¹assa abhayassa averassa abyÄbajjhassa bhÄgÄ« hoti. And they themselves also enjoy unlimited freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will.

surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ pahÄya surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti. Furthermore, a noble disciple gives up beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants.
SurÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako aparimÄį¹Änaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ abhayaį¹ deti averaį¹ deti abyÄbajjhaį¹ deti. By so doing they give to countless sentient beings the gift of freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will.
