Vāseį¹­į¹­hasutta With Vāseį¹­į¹­ha on the Sabbath

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Atha kho vāseį¹­į¹­ho upāsako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho vāseį¹­į¹­haį¹ upāsakaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then the layman Vāseį¹­į¹­ha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œaį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgato, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, uposatho upavuttho mahapphalo hoti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œVāseį¹­į¹­ha, the observance of the sabbath with its eight factors is very fruitful and beneficial and splendid and bountiful ā€¦

aninditā saggamupenti į¹­hānanā€ti. blameless, they go to a heavenly place.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, vāseį¹­į¹­ho upāsako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Vāseį¹­į¹­ha said to the Buddha:

ā€œpiyā me, bhante, Ʊātisālohitā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, piyānampi me assa Ʊātisālohitānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya. ā€œIf my loved onesā€”relatives and kinā€”were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.

Sabbe cepi, bhante, khattiyā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa khattiyānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya. Sabbe cepi, bhante, brāhmaį¹‡Ä ā€¦peā€¦ vessā ā€¦ suddā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa suddānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāyāā€ti. If all the aristocrats, brahmins, peasants, and menials were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.ā€

ā€œEvametaį¹, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, evametaį¹, vāseį¹­į¹­ha. ā€œThatā€™s so true, Vāseį¹­į¹­ha! Thatā€™s so true, Vāseį¹­į¹­ha!

Sabbe cepi, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, khattiyā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa khattiyānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya. Sabbe cepi, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, brāhmaį¹‡Ä ā€¦peā€¦ vessā ā€¦ suddā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa suddānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya. If all the aristocrats, brahmins, peasants, and menials were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.

Sadevako cepi, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, loko samārako sabrahmako sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡Ä« pajā sadevamanussā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sadevakassapissa lokassa samārakassa sabrahmakassa sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya. If the whole worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humansā€”were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.

Ime cepi, vāseį¹­į¹­ha, mahāsālā aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gasamannāgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, imesampissa mahāsālānaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitāya sukhāya (ā€¦). If these great sal trees were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happinessā€”if they were sentient.

Ko pana vādo manussabhÅ«tassāā€ti. How much more then a human being!ā€
