Dutiyavisākhāsutta With Visākhā on the Agreeable Gods

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of Migāraā€™s mother in the Eastern Monastery.

Atha kho visākhā migāramātā ā€¦peā€¦ Then Visākhā, Migāraā€™s mother, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side.

ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho visākhaį¹ migāramātaraį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said to her:

ā€œAį¹­į¹­hahi kho, visākhe, dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä manāpakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. ā€œVisākhā, when they have eight qualities femalesā€”when their body breaks up, after deathā€”are reborn in company with the Gods of the Agreeable Host.

Katamehi aį¹­į¹­hahi? What eight?

Idha, visākhe, mātugāmo yassa mātāpitaro bhattuno denti atthakāmā hitesino anukampakā anukampaį¹ upādāya tassa hoti pubbuį¹­į¹­hāyinÄ« pacchānipātinÄ« kiį¹…kārapaį¹­issāvinÄ« manāpacārinÄ« piyavādinÄ« ā€¦peā€¦. Take the case of a female whose mother and father give her to a husband wanting whatā€™s best for her, out of kindness and sympathy. She would get up before him and go to bed after him, and be obliging, behaving nicely and speaking politely. ā€¦

CāgavatÄ« kho pana hoti. Sheā€™s generous.

Vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraį¹ ajjhāvasati muttacāgā payatapāį¹‡inÄ« vossaggaratā yācayogā dānasaį¹vibhāgaratā. She lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Imehi kho, visākhe, aį¹­į¹­hahi dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä manāpakāyikānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ti. When they have these eight qualities femalesā€”when their body breaks up, after deathā€”are reborn in company with the Gods of the Agreeable Host.

Yo naį¹ bharati sabbadā, Sheā€™d never look down on her husband,

niccaį¹ ātāpi ussuko; whoā€™s always eager to work hard,

Taį¹ sabbakāmadaį¹ posaį¹, always looking after her,

bhattāraį¹ nātimaƱƱati. and bringing whatever she wants.

Na cāpi sotthi bhattāraį¹, And a good woman never scolds her husband

issāvādena rosaye; with jealous words.

Bhattu ca garuno sabbe, Being astute, she reveres

paį¹­ipÅ«jeti paį¹‡įøitā. those respected by her husband.

Uį¹­į¹­hāhikā analasā, She gets up early, works tirelessly,

saį¹…gahitaparijjanā; and manages the domestic help.

Bhattu manāpaį¹ carati, Sheā€™s agreeable to her husband,

sambhataį¹ anurakkhati. and preserves his wealth.

Yā evaį¹ vattati nārÄ«, A lady who fulfills these duties

bhattu chandavasānugā; according to her husbandā€™s desire,

Manāpā nāma te devā, is reborn among the gods

yattha sā upapajjatÄ«ā€ti. called ā€˜Agreeableā€™.ā€
