Saį¹…khittasutta Brief Advice to GotamÄ«

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Atha kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho sā mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:

ā€œSādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā ekā vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­hā appamattā ātāpinÄ« pahitattā vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œYe kho tvaį¹, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi: ā€œGotamÄ«, you might know that certain things

ā€˜ime dhammā sarāgāya saį¹vattanti, no virāgāya; lead to passion, not dispassion;

saį¹yogāya saį¹vattanti, no visaį¹yogāya; to yoking, not to unyoking;

ācayāya saį¹vattanti, no apacayāya; to accumulation, not dispersal;

mahicchatāya saį¹vattanti, no appicchatāya; to more desires, not fewer;

asantuį¹­į¹­hiyā saį¹vattanti, no santuį¹­į¹­hiyā; to lack of contentment, not contentment;

saį¹…gaį¹‡ikāya saį¹vattanti, no pavivekāya; to crowding, not seclusion;

kosajjāya saį¹vattanti, no vÄ«riyārambhāya; to laziness, not energy;

dubbharatāya saį¹vattanti, no subharatāyāā€™ti, to being burdensome, not being unburdensome.

ekaį¹sena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi: Categorically, you should remember these things as

ā€˜neso dhammo, neso vinayo, netaį¹ satthusāsananā€™ti. not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacherā€™s instructions.

Ye ca kho tvaį¹, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi: You might know that certain things

ā€˜ime dhammā virāgāya saį¹vattanti, no sarāgāya; lead to dispassion, not passion;

visaį¹yogāya saį¹vattanti, no saį¹yogāya; to unyoking, not to yoking;

apacayāya saį¹vattanti, no ācayāya; to dispersal, not accumulation;

appicchatāya saį¹vattanti, no mahicchatāya; to fewer desires, not more;

santuį¹­į¹­hiyā saį¹vattanti, no asantuį¹­į¹­hiyā; to contentment, not lack of contentment;

pavivekāya saį¹vattanti, no saį¹…gaį¹‡ikāya; to seclusion, not crowding;

vÄ«riyārambhāya saį¹vattanti, no kosajjāya; to energy, not laziness;

subharatāya saį¹vattanti, no dubbharatāyāā€™ti, to being unburdensome, not being burdensome.

ekaį¹sena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi: Categorically, you should remember these things as

ā€˜eso dhammo, eso vinayo, etaį¹ satthusāsananā€™ā€ti. the teaching, the training, and the Teacherā€™s instructions.ā€
