GayÄsÄ«sasutta At GayÄ Head
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ gayÄyaį¹ viharati gayÄsÄ«se. At one time the Buddha was staying near GayÄ on GayÄ Head.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi ā¦peā¦ There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
āpubbÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sambodhÄ anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samÄno obhÄsaƱƱeva kho saƱjÄnÄmi, no ca rÅ«pÄni passÄmi. āMendicants, before my awakeningāwhen I was still not awake but intent on awakeningāI perceived light but did not see forms.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,
āsace kho ahaį¹ obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄneyyaį¹ rÅ«pÄni ca passeyyaį¹; āWhat if I were to both perceive light and see forms?
evaį¹ me idaį¹ ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assÄāti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā
So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄmi, rÅ«pÄni ca passÄmi; So after some time, living diligent, keen, and resolute, I perceived light and saw forms.
no ca kho tÄhi devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hÄmi sallapÄmi sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjÄmi. But I didnāt associate with those deities, converse, or engage in discussion.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,
āsace kho ahaį¹ obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄneyyaį¹, rÅ«pÄni ca passeyyaį¹, tÄhi ca devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹heyyaį¹ sallapeyyaį¹ sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjeyyaį¹; āWhat if I were to perceive light and see forms; and associate with those deities, converse, and engage in discussion?
evaį¹ me idaį¹ ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assÄāti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā
So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄmi, rÅ«pÄni ca passÄmi, tÄhi ca devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hÄmi sallapÄmi sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjÄmi; So after some time ā¦ I perceived light and saw forms. And I associated with those deities, conversed, and engaged in discussion.
no ca kho tÄ devatÄ jÄnÄmiāBut I didnāt know which
imÄ devatÄ amukamhÄ vÄ amukamhÄ vÄ devanikÄyÄti. orders of gods those deities came from.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,
āsace kho ahaį¹ obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄneyyaį¹, rÅ«pÄni ca passeyyaį¹, tÄhi ca devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹heyyaį¹ sallapeyyaį¹ sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjeyyaį¹, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄneyyaį¹: āWhat if I were to perceive light and see forms; and associate with those deities, converse, and engage in discussion;
āimÄ devatÄ amukamhÄ vÄ amukamhÄ vÄ devanikÄyÄāti; and find out which orders of gods those deities come from?
evaį¹ me idaį¹ ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assÄāti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā
So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄmi, rÅ«pÄni ca passÄmi, tÄhi ca devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hÄmi sallapÄmi sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjÄmi, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi: So after some time ā¦ I perceived light and saw forms. And I associated with those deities ā¦ And I found out which orders of gods those deities came from.
āimÄ devatÄ amukamhÄ vÄ amukamhÄ vÄ devanikÄyÄāti;
no ca kho tÄ devatÄ jÄnÄmi: But I didnāt know what
āimÄ devatÄ imassa kammassa vipÄkena ito cutÄ tattha upapannÄāti ā¦peā¦ deeds caused those deities to be reborn there after passing away from here.
tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi: So after some time ā¦ I found out what
āimÄ devatÄ imassa kammassa vipÄkena ito cutÄ tattha upapannÄāti; deeds caused those deities to be reborn there after passing away from here.
no ca kho tÄ devatÄ jÄnÄmi: But I didnāt know what
āimÄ devatÄ imassa kammassa vipÄkena evamÄhÄrÄ evaį¹sukhadukkhappaį¹isaį¹vediniyoāti ā¦peā¦ deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain.
tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi: So after some time ā¦ I found out what
āimÄ devatÄ imassa kammassa vipÄkena evamÄhÄrÄ evaį¹sukhadukkhappaį¹isaį¹vediniyoāti; deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain.
no ca kho tÄ devatÄ jÄnÄmi: But I didnāt know that
āimÄ devatÄ evaį¹dÄ«ghÄyukÄ evaį¹ciraį¹į¹hitikÄāti ā¦peā¦ these deities have a lifespan of such a length.
tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi: So after some time ā¦ I found out that
āimÄ devatÄ evaį¹dÄ«ghÄyukÄ evaį¹ciraį¹į¹hitikÄāti; these deities have a lifespan of such a length.
no ca kho tÄ devatÄ jÄnÄmi yadi vÄ me imÄhi devatÄhi saddhiį¹ sannivutthapubbaį¹ yadi vÄ na sannivutthapubbanti. But I didnāt know whether or not I had previously lived together with those deities.

āimÄ devatÄ evamÄhÄrÄ evaį¹sukhadukkhappaį¹isaį¹vediniyoāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄneyyaį¹: and what deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain;
āimÄ devatÄ evaį¹dÄ«ghÄyukÄ evaį¹ciraį¹į¹hitikÄāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄneyyaį¹ yadi vÄ me imÄhi devatÄhi saddhiį¹ sannivutthapubbaį¹ yadi vÄ na sannivutthapubbanti; and that these deities have a lifespan of such a length; and whether or not I have previously lived together with those deities?
evaį¹ me idaį¹ ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assÄāti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā
So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄmi, rÅ«pÄni ca passÄmi, tÄhi ca devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hÄmi sallapÄmi sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjÄmi, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi: So after some time ā¦
āimÄ devatÄ amukamhÄ vÄ amukamhÄ vÄ devanikÄyÄāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi:
āimÄ devatÄ imassa kammassa vipÄkena ito cutÄ tattha upapannÄāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi:
āimÄ devatÄ evamÄhÄrÄ evaį¹sukhadukkhappaį¹isaį¹vediniyoāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi:
āimÄ devatÄ evaį¹dÄ«ghÄyukÄ evaį¹ciraį¹į¹hitikÄāti, tÄ ca devatÄ jÄnÄmi yadi vÄ me devatÄhi saddhiį¹ sannivutthapubbaį¹ yadi vÄ na sannivutthapubbanti. I found out whether or not I have previously lived together with those deities.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca me, bhikkhave, evaį¹ aį¹į¹haparivaį¹į¹aį¹ adhidevaƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ na suvisuddhaį¹ ahosi, neva tÄvÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, āsadevake loke samÄrake sabrahmake sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya anuttaraį¹ sammÄsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoāti paccaƱƱÄsiį¹. As long as my knowledge and vision about the deities was not fully purified in these eight rounds, I didnāt announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, MÄras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
Yato ca kho me, bhikkhave, evaį¹ aį¹į¹haparivaį¹į¹aį¹ adhidevaƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ suvisuddhaį¹ ahosi, athÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, āsadevake loke samÄrake sabrahmake sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya anuttaraį¹ sammÄsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoāti paccaƱƱÄsiį¹; But when my knowledge and vision about the deities was fully purified in these eight rounds, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, MÄras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
ƱÄį¹aƱca pana me dassanaį¹ udapÄdi; Knowledge and vision arose in me:
akuppÄ me cetovimutti; ayamantimÄ jÄti natthi dÄni punabbhavoāti. āMy freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now thereāll be no more future lives.āā
