Gayāsīsasutta At Gayā Head

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā gayāyaį¹ viharati gayāsÄ«se. At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on Gayā Head.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi ā€¦peā€¦ There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œpubbāhaį¹, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samāno obhāsaƱƱeva kho saƱjānāmi, no ca rÅ«pāni passāmi. ā€œMendicants, before my awakeningā€”when I was still not awake but intent on awakeningā€”I perceived light but did not see forms.

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,

ā€˜sace kho ahaį¹ obhāsaƱceva saƱjāneyyaį¹ rÅ«pāni ca passeyyaį¹; ā€˜What if I were to both perceive light and see forms?

evaį¹ me idaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assāā€™ti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā€™

So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhāsaƱceva saƱjānāmi, rÅ«pāni ca passāmi; So after some time, living diligent, keen, and resolute, I perceived light and saw forms.

no ca kho tāhi devatāhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hāmi sallapāmi sākacchaį¹ samāpajjāmi. But I didnā€™t associate with those deities, converse, or engage in discussion.

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,

ā€˜sace kho ahaį¹ obhāsaƱceva saƱjāneyyaį¹, rÅ«pāni ca passeyyaį¹, tāhi ca devatāhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹heyyaį¹ sallapeyyaį¹ sākacchaį¹ samāpajjeyyaį¹; ā€˜What if I were to perceive light and see forms; and associate with those deities, converse, and engage in discussion?

evaį¹ me idaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assāā€™ti. Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā€™

So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhāsaƱceva saƱjānāmi, rÅ«pāni ca passāmi, tāhi ca devatāhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hāmi sallapāmi sākacchaį¹ samāpajjāmi; So after some time ā€¦ I perceived light and saw forms. And I associated with those deities, conversed, and engaged in discussion.

no ca kho tā devatā jānāmiā€”But I didnā€™t know which

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me,

ā€œimā devatā amukamhā vā amukamhā vā devanikāyāā€ti; and find out which orders of gods those deities come from?

tā ca devatā jānāmi: So after some time ā€¦ I found out what
