Puį¹‡į¹‡iyasutta With Puį¹‡į¹‡iya

Atha kho āyasmā puį¹‡į¹‡iyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā puį¹‡į¹‡iyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Puį¹‡į¹‡iya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena appekadā tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā paį¹­ibhāti, appekadā na paį¹­ibhātÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why sometimes the Realized One feels inspired to teach, and other times not?ā€

ā€œSaddho ca, puį¹‡į¹‡iya, bhikkhu hoti, no cupasaį¹…kamitā; ā€œPuį¹‡į¹‡iya, when a mendicant has faith but doesnā€™t approach,

neva tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā paį¹­ibhāti. the Realized One doesnā€™t feel inspired to teach.

Yato ca kho, puį¹‡į¹‡iya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaį¹…kamitā ca; But when a mendicant has faith and approaches,

evaį¹ tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā paį¹­ibhāti. the Realized One feels inspired to teach.

Saddho ca, puį¹‡į¹‡iya, bhikkhu hoti, upasaį¹…kamitā ca, no ca payirupāsitā ā€¦peā€¦ When a mendicant has faith and approaches, but doesnā€™t pay homage ā€¦

payirupāsitā ca, no ca paripucchitā ā€¦ they pay homage, but donā€™t ask questions ā€¦

paripucchitā ca, no ca ohitasoto dhammaį¹ suį¹‡Äti ā€¦ they ask questions, but donā€™t actively listen to the teaching ā€¦

ohitasoto ca dhammaį¹ suį¹‡Äti, no ca sutvā dhammaį¹ dhāreti ā€¦ they actively listen to the teaching, but donā€™t remember the teaching theyā€™ve heard ā€¦

sutvā ca dhammaį¹ dhāreti, no ca dhātānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati ā€¦ they remember the teaching theyā€™ve heard, but donā€™t reflect on the meaning of the teachings theyā€™ve remembered ā€¦

dhātānaƱca dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati, no ca atthamaƱƱāya dhammamaƱƱāya dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipanno hoti. they reflect on the meaning of the teachings theyā€™ve remembered, but, not having understood the meaning and the teaching, they donā€™t practice accordingly.

Neva tāva tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā paį¹­ibhāti. The Realized One doesnā€™t feel inspired to teach.

Yato ca kho, puį¹‡į¹‡iya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaį¹…kamitā ca, payirupāsitā ca, paripucchitā ca, ohitasoto ca dhammaį¹ suį¹‡Äti, sutvā ca dhammaį¹ dhāreti, dhātānaƱca dhammānaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati, atthamaƱƱāya dhammamaƱƱāya dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipanno ca hoti; But when a mendicant has faith, approaches, pays homage, asks questions, actively listen to the teachings, remembers the teachings, reflects on the meaning, and practices accordingly,

evaį¹ tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā paį¹­ibhāti. the Realized One feels inspired to teach.

Imehi kho, puį¹‡į¹‡iya, aį¹­į¹­hahi dhammehi samannāgatā ekantapaį¹­ibhānā tathāgataį¹ dhammadesanā hotÄ«ā€ti. When someone has these eight qualities, the Realized One feels totally inspired to teach.ā€
