āSace, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: āMendicants, if wanderers of other religions were to ask:
ākiį¹mÅ«lakÄ, Ävuso, sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹sambhavÄ sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹samudayÄ sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹samosaraį¹Ä sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹pamukhÄ sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹adhipateyyÄ sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹uttarÄ sabbe dhammÄ, kiį¹sÄrÄ sabbe dhammÄāti, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ kinti byÄkareyyÄthÄāti? āReverends, all things have what as their root? What produces them? What is their origin? What is their meeting place? What is their chief? What is their ruler? What is their overseer? What is their core?ā How would you answer them?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ, bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
āTena hi, bhikkhave, desessÄmi. āWell then, mendicants, I will teach it.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.

āchandamÅ«lakÄ, Ävuso, sabbe dhammÄ, manasikÄrasambhavÄ sabbe dhammÄ, phassasamudayÄ sabbe dhammÄ, vedanÄsamosaraį¹Ä sabbe dhammÄ, samÄdhippamukhÄ sabbe dhammÄ, satÄdhipateyyÄ sabbe dhammÄ, paƱƱuttarÄ sabbe dhammÄ, vimuttisÄrÄ sabbe dhammÄāti, āReverends, all things are rooted in desire. They are produced by application of mind. Contact is their origin. Feeling is their meeting place. Immersion is their chief. Mindfulness is their ruler. Wisdom is their overseer. Freedom is their core.ā
