ā€œSace, bhikkhave, aƱƱatitthiyā paribbājakā evaį¹ puccheyyuį¹: ā€œMendicants, if wanderers of other religions were to ask:

ā€˜kiį¹mÅ«lakā, āvuso, sabbe dhammā, kiį¹sambhavā sabbe dhammā, kiį¹samudayā sabbe dhammā, kiį¹samosaraį¹‡Ä sabbe dhammā, kiį¹pamukhā sabbe dhammā, kiį¹adhipateyyā sabbe dhammā, kiį¹uttarā sabbe dhammā, kiį¹sārā sabbe dhammāā€™ti, evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ kinti byākareyyāthāā€ti? ā€˜Reverends, all things have what as their root? What produces them? What is their origin? What is their meeting place? What is their chief? What is their ruler? What is their overseer? What is their core?ā€™ How would you answer them?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā, bhagavaį¹nettikā bhagavaį¹paį¹­isaraį¹‡Ä. Sādhu, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹­ibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhÅ« dhāressantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā€

ā€œTena hi, bhikkhave, desessāmi. ā€œWell then, mendicants, I will teach it.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

evaį¹ puį¹­į¹­hā tumhe, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyānaį¹ paribbājakānaį¹ evaį¹ byākareyyātha: You should answer them:

ā€˜chandamÅ«lakā, āvuso, sabbe dhammā, manasikārasambhavā sabbe dhammā, phassasamudayā sabbe dhammā, vedanāsamosaraį¹‡Ä sabbe dhammā, samādhippamukhā sabbe dhammā, satādhipateyyā sabbe dhammā, paƱƱuttarā sabbe dhammā, vimuttisārā sabbe dhammāā€™ti, ā€˜Reverends, all things are rooted in desire. They are produced by application of mind. Contact is their origin. Feeling is their meeting place. Immersion is their chief. Mindfulness is their ruler. Wisdom is their overseer. Freedom is their core.ā€™
