Nissayasutta Supported
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āānissayasampanno nissayasampannoāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of being āsupportedā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotÄ«āti? How is a mendicant who is supported defined?ā
āSaddhaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissÄya akusalaį¹ pajahati kusalaį¹ bhÄveti, pahÄ«namevassa taį¹ akusalaį¹ hoti. āMendicant, if a mendicant supported by faith gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.

paƱƱaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissÄya akusalaį¹ pajahati kusalaį¹ bhÄveti, pahÄ«namevassa taį¹ akusalaį¹ hoti. If a mendicant supported by wisdom gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.
Taį¹ hissa bhikkhuno akusalaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ hoti suppahÄ«naį¹, yaį¹sa ariyÄya paƱƱÄya disvÄ pahÄ«naį¹. Whatās been given up is completely given up when it has been given up by seeing with noble wisdom.
Tena ca pana, bhikkhu, bhikkhunÄ imesu paƱcasu dhammesu patiį¹į¹hÄya cattÄro upanissÄya vihÄtabbÄ. But then, a mendicant grounded on these five things should rely on four things.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu saį¹
khÄyekaį¹ paį¹isevati, saį¹
khÄyekaį¹ adhivÄseti, saį¹
khÄyekaį¹ parivajjeti, saį¹
khÄyekaį¹ vinodeti. After appraisal, a mendicant uses some things, endures some things, avoids some things, and gets rid of some things.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotÄ«āti. Thatās how a mendicant is supported.ā
