Nissayasutta Supported

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œā€˜nissayasampanno nissayasampannoā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of being ā€˜supportedā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti? How is a mendicant who is supported defined?ā€

ā€œSaddhaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya akusalaį¹ pajahati kusalaį¹ bhāveti, pahÄ«namevassa taį¹ akusalaį¹ hoti. ā€œMendicant, if a mendicant supported by faith gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.

HiriƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya ā€¦peā€¦ If a mendicant supported by conscience ā€¦

ottappaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya ā€¦peā€¦ If a mendicant supported by prudence ā€¦

vÄ«riyaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya ā€¦peā€¦ If a mendicant supported by energy ā€¦

paƱƱaƱce, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissāya akusalaį¹ pajahati kusalaį¹ bhāveti, pahÄ«namevassa taį¹ akusalaį¹ hoti. If a mendicant supported by wisdom gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful, the unskillful is actually given up by them.

Taį¹ hissa bhikkhuno akusalaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ hoti suppahÄ«naį¹, yaį¹sa ariyāya paƱƱāya disvā pahÄ«naį¹. Whatā€™s been given up is completely given up when it has been given up by seeing with noble wisdom.

Tena ca pana, bhikkhu, bhikkhunā imesu paƱcasu dhammesu patiį¹­į¹­hāya cattāro upanissāya vihātabbā. But then, a mendicant grounded on these five things should rely on four things.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu saį¹…khāyekaį¹ paį¹­isevati, saį¹…khāyekaį¹ adhivāseti, saį¹…khāyekaį¹ parivajjeti, saį¹…khāyekaį¹ vinodeti. After appraisal, a mendicant uses some things, endures some things, avoids some things, and gets rid of some things.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu nissayasampanno hotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant is supported.ā€
