Sutavāsutta With Sutavā the Wanderer

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain.

Atha kho sutavā paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Sutavā went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho sutavā paribbājako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œEkamidāhaį¹, bhante, samayaį¹ bhagavā idheva rājagahe viharāmi giribbaje. ā€œSir, this one time the Buddha was staying right here in Rājagaha, the Mountainfold.

Tatra me, bhante, bhagavato sammukhā sutaį¹ sammukhā paį¹iggahitaį¹: There I heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:

ā€˜yo so, sutavā, bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo vusitavā katakaraį¹‡Ä«yo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹‡abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱāvimutto, abhabbo so paƱca į¹hānāni ajjhācarituį¹ā€”ā€˜A mendicant who is perfectedā€”with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentā€”canā€™t transgress in five respects.

abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu saƱcicca pāį¹‡aį¹ jÄ«vitā voropetuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu adinnaį¹ theyyasaį¹…khātaį¹ ādātuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu methunaį¹ dhammaį¹ paį¹isevituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu sampajānamusā bhāsituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu sannidhikārakaį¹ kāme paribhuƱjituį¹ seyyathāpi pubbe agāriyabhÅ«toā€™ti. A mendicant with defilements ended canā€™t deliberately take the life of a living creature, take something with the intention to steal, have sex, tell a deliberate lie, or store up goods for their own enjoyment like they did as a lay person.ā€™

Kacci metaį¹, bhante, bhagavato sussutaį¹ suggahitaį¹ sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhāritanā€ti? I trust I properly heard, learned, applied the mind, and remembered that from the Buddha?ā€

ā€œTaggha te etaį¹, sutavā, sussutaį¹ suggahitaį¹ sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhāritaį¹. ā€œIndeed, Sutavā, you properly heard, learned, applied the mind, and remembered that.

Pubbe cāhaį¹, sutavā, etarahi ca evaį¹ vadāmi: In the past, as today, I say this:

ā€˜yo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo vusitavā katakaraį¹‡Ä«yo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹‡abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱāvimutto, abhabbo so nava į¹hānāni ajjhācarituį¹ā€”ā€˜A mendicant who is perfectedā€”with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentā€”canā€™t transgress in nine respects.

abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu saƱcicca pāį¹‡aį¹ jÄ«vitā voropetuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu adinnaį¹ theyyasaį¹…khātaį¹ ādātuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu methunaį¹ dhammaį¹ paį¹isevituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu sampajānamusā bhāsituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu sannidhikārakaį¹ kāme paribhuƱjituį¹ seyyathāpi pubbe agāriyabhÅ«to, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu chandāgatiį¹ gantuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu dosāgatiį¹ gantuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu mohāgatiį¹ gantuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo bhikkhu bhayāgatiį¹ gantuį¹ā€™. A mendicant with defilements ended canā€™t deliberately take the life of a living creature, take something with the intention to steal, have sex, tell a deliberate lie, or store up goods for their own enjoyment like they did as a lay person. And they canā€™t make decisions prejudiced by favoritism, hostility, stupidity, or cowardice.ā€™

Pubbe cāhaį¹, sutavā, etarahi ca evaį¹ vadāmi: In the past, as today, I say this:

ā€˜yo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo vusitavā katakaraį¹‡Ä«yo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹‡abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱāvimutto, abhabbo so imāni nava į¹hānāni ajjhācaritunā€™ā€ti. ā€˜A mendicant who is perfectedā€”with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentā€”canā€™t transgress in these nine respects.ā€™ā€
