Sajjhasutta With the Wanderer Sajjha
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Atha kho sajjho paribbÄjako yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then the wanderer Sajjha went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho sajjho paribbÄjako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
āEkamidÄhaį¹, bhante, samayaį¹ bhagavÄ idheva rÄjagahe viharÄmi giribbaje. āSir, this one time the Buddha was staying right here in RÄjagaha, the Mountainfold.
Tatra me, bhante, bhagavato sammukhÄ sutaį¹ sammukhÄ paį¹iggahitaį¹: There I heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:
āyo so, sajjha, bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto, abhabbo so paƱca į¹hÄnÄni ajjhÄcarituį¹āāA mendicant who is perfectedāwith defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentācanāt transgress in five respects.
abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu saƱcicca pÄį¹aį¹ jÄ«vitÄ voropetuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu adinnaį¹ theyyasaį¹
khÄtaį¹ ÄdÄtuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu methunaį¹ dhammaį¹ paį¹isevituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu sampajÄnamusÄ bhÄsituį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu sannidhikÄrakaį¹ kÄme paribhuƱjituį¹ seyyathÄpi pubbe agÄriyabhÅ«toāti. A mendicant with defilements ended canāt deliberately take the life of a living creature, take something with the intention to steal, have sex, tell a deliberate lie, or store up goods for their own enjoyment like they did as a lay person.ā
Kacci metaį¹, bhante, bhagavato sussutaį¹ suggahitaį¹ sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhÄritanāti? I trust I properly heard, learned, applied the mind, and remembered that from the Buddha?ā
āTaggha te etaį¹, sajjha, sussutaį¹ suggahitaį¹ sumanasikataį¹ sÅ«padhÄritaį¹. āIndeed, Sajjha, you properly heard, learned, applied the mind, and remembered that.
Pubbe cÄhaį¹, sajjha, etarahi ca evaį¹ vadÄmi: In the past, as today, I say this:
āyo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto, abhabbo so nava į¹hÄnÄni ajjhÄcarituį¹āāA mendicant who is perfectedāwith defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentācanāt transgress in nine respects.
abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu saƱcicca pÄį¹aį¹ jÄ«vitÄ voropetuį¹ ā¦peā¦ abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu sannidhikÄrakaį¹ kÄme paribhuƱjituį¹ seyyathÄpi pubbe agÄriyabhÅ«to, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu buddhaį¹ paccakkhÄtuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu dhammaį¹ paccakkhÄtuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu saį¹
ghaį¹ paccakkhÄtuį¹, abhabbo khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu sikkhaį¹ paccakkhÄtuį¹ā. A mendicant with defilements ended canāt deliberately kill a living creature, take something with the intention to steal, have sex, tell a deliberate lie, or store up goods for their own enjoyment like they used to as a lay person. And they canāt abandon the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹
gha, or the training.ā
Pubbe cÄhaį¹, sajjha, etarahi ca evaį¹ vadÄmi: In the past, as today, I say this:
āyo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto, abhabbo so imÄni nava į¹hÄnÄni ajjhÄcaritunāāti. āA mendicant who is perfectedāwith defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenmentācanāt transgress in these nine respects.āā
