Koį¹­į¹­hikasutta With Koį¹­į¹­hita

Atha kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Sāriputta:

ā€œkiį¹ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaį¹ kammaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammavedanÄ«yaį¹, taį¹ me kammaį¹ samparāyavedanÄ«yaį¹ hotÅ«ā€™ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced in this life be experienced by me in lives to comeā€™?ā€

ā€œNo hidaį¹, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not, reverend.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panāvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaį¹ kammaį¹ samparāyavedanÄ«yaį¹ taį¹ me kammaį¹ diį¹­į¹­hadhammavedanÄ«yaį¹ hotÅ«ā€™ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced in lives to come be experienced by me in this lifeā€™?ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panāvuso, sāriputta, ā€˜yaį¹ kammaį¹ dukkhavedanÄ«yaį¹, taį¹ me kammaį¹ sukhavedanÄ«yaį¹ hotÅ«ā€™ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced as painful be experienced by me as pleasantā€™?ā€

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaį¹ kammaį¹ paripakkavedanÄ«yaį¹, taį¹ me kammaį¹ aparipakkavedanÄ«yaį¹ hotÅ«ā€™ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced when ripe be experienced by me when unripeā€™?ā€

ā€œYaį¹ khvassa, āvuso, aƱƱātaį¹ adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ appattaį¹ asacchikataį¹ anabhisametaį¹, tassa Ʊāį¹‡Äya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ti. ā€œReverend, the spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend that which is unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended.ā€

Kiį¹ panassāvuso, aƱƱātaį¹ adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ appattaį¹ asacchikataį¹ anabhisametaį¹, yassa Ʊāį¹‡Äya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ti? ā€œBut what is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended?ā€

ā€˜Idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti khvassa, āvuso, aƱƱātaį¹ adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ appattaį¹ asacchikataį¹ anabhisametaį¹. ā€œā€˜This is suffering.ā€™ ā€¦

Tassa Ʊāį¹‡Äya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussati.

ā€˜Ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti khvassa, āvuso ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti khvassa, āvuso ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of suffering.ā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of suffering.ā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti khvassa, āvuso, aƱƱātaį¹ adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ appattaį¹ asacchikataį¹ anabhisametaį¹. ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.ā€™ ā€¦

Tassa Ʊāį¹‡Äya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti. The spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend this.ā€
