PaƱƱāvimuttasutta Freed by Wisdom

ā€œā€˜PaƱƱāvimutto, paƱƱāvimuttoā€™ti, āvuso, vuccati. ā€œReverend, they speak of a person called ā€˜freed by wisdomā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, paƱƱāvimutto vutto bhagavatāā€ti? What is the one freed by wisdom that the Buddha spoke of?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi ā€¦peā€¦ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja viharati, ā€œFirst, take a mendicant who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures ā€¦ enters and remains in the first absorption.

paƱƱāya ca naį¹ pajānāti. And they understand that with wisdom.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, paƱƱāvimutto vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena ā€¦peā€¦. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the one freed by wisdom in a qualified sense. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ upasampajja viharati, paƱƱāya cassa disvā āsavā parikkhÄ«į¹‡Ä honti, Furthermore, take a mendicant who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end.

paƱƱāya ca naį¹ pajānāti. And they understand that with wisdom.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, paƱƱāvimutto vutto bhagavatā nippariyāyenāā€ti. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the one freed by wisdom in a definitive sense.ā€
