Sikkhādubbalyasutta Weaknesses in Training and Mindfulness Meditation

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, sikkhādubbalyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Pāį¹‡Ätipāto, adinnādānaį¹, kāmesumicchācāro, musāvādo, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ā€”Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca sikkhādubbalyāni. These are the five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvetabbā. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; Itā€™s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya ime cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvetabbāā€ti. To give up those five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four kinds of mindfulness meditation.ā€
