Sikkhasutta Weaknesses in Training and Effort

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, sikkhādubbalyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Pāį¹‡Ätipāto ā€¦peā€¦ surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ā€”Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca sikkhādubbalyāni. These are the five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four right efforts.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; Itā€™s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise.

uppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.

anuppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ uppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya ime cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbāā€ti. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four right efforts.ā€
