Cetasovinibandhasutta Shackles of the Heart

ā€œPaƱcime, bhikkhave, cetasovinibandhā. ā€œMendicants, there are these five shackles of the heart.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāmesu avÄ«tarāgo hoti ā€¦peā€¦ Firstly, a mendicant isnā€™t free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures. ā€¦

ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca cetasovinibandhā. These are the five shackles of the heart.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ cetasovinibandhānaį¹ pahānāya cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā. To give up these five shackles of the heart you should develop the four right efforts.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati; Itā€™s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise. ā€¦

uppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ pahānāya ā€¦ so that unskillful qualities are given up ā€¦

anuppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ uppādāya ā€¦ so that skillful qualities arise ā€¦

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ cetasovinibandhānaį¹ pahānāya ime cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbāā€ti. To give up these five shackles of the hearts you should develop these four right efforts.ā€
