Cetasovinibandhasutta Shackles of the Heart
āPaƱcime, bhikkhave, cetasovinibandhÄ. āMendicants, there are these five shackles of the heart.
Katame paƱca? What five?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kÄmesu avÄ«tarÄgo hoti ā¦peā¦ Firstly, a mendicant isnāt free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures. ā¦
ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca cetasovinibandhÄ. These are the five shackles of the heart.
Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ cetasovinibandhÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄ. To give up these five shackles of the heart you should develop the four right efforts.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ anuppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; Itās when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise. ā¦
uppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya ā¦ so that unskillful qualities are given up ā¦
anuppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ uppÄdÄya ā¦ so that skillful qualities arise ā¦
uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.
Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ cetasovinibandhÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya ime cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄāti. To give up these five shackles of the hearts you should develop these four right efforts.ā
