Sikkhasutta Weaknesses in Training and the Bases of Psychic Power

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, sikkhādubbalyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Pāį¹‡Ätipāto ā€¦peā€¦ surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ā€”Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca sikkhādubbalyāni. These are the five weaknesses when youā€™re training.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbā. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four bases of psychic power.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhipadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāveti, Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.

vÄ«riyasamādhi ā€¦ They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy, and active effort.

cittasamādhi ā€¦ They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to mental development, and active effort.

vÄ«maį¹sāsamādhipadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāveti. They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to inquiry, and active effort.

Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ sikkhādubbalyānaį¹ pahānāya ime cattāro iddhipādā bhāvetabbāā€ti. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four bases of psychic power.ā€
