Cetanākaraį¹‡Ä«yasutta Making a Wish

ā€œSÄ«lavato, bhikkhave, sÄ«lasampannassa na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: ā€œMendicants, an ethical person, who has fulfilled ethical conduct, need not make a wish:

ā€˜avippaį¹­isāro me uppajjatÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I have no regrets!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ sÄ«lavato sÄ«lasampannassa avippaį¹­isāro uppajjati. Itā€™s only natural that an ethical person has no regrets.

Avippaį¹­isārissa, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When you have no regrets you need not make a wish:

ā€˜pāmojjaį¹ me uppajjatÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I feel joy!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ avippaį¹­isārissa pāmojjaį¹ jāyati. Itā€™s only natural that joy springs up when you have no regrets.

Pamuditassa, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When you feel joy you need not make a wish:

ā€˜pÄ«ti me uppajjatÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I experience rapture!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ pamuditassa pÄ«ti uppajjati. Itā€™s only natural that rapture arises when youā€™re joyful.

PÄ«timanassa, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When your mind is full of rapture you need not make a wish:

ā€˜kāyo me passambhatÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May my body become tranquil!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ pÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati. Itā€™s only natural that your body becomes tranquil when your mind is full of rapture.

Passaddhakāyassa, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When your body is tranquil you need not make a wish:

ā€˜sukhaį¹ vediyāmÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I feel bliss!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ passaddhakāyo sukhaį¹ vediyati. Itā€™s only natural to feel bliss when your body is tranquil.

Sukhino, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When you feel bliss you need not make a wish:

ā€˜cittaį¹ me samādhiyatÅ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May my mind be immersed in samādhi!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati. Itā€™s only natural for the mind to be immersed in samādhi when you feel bliss.

Samāhitassa, bhikkhave, na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When your mind is immersed in samādhi you need not make a wish:

ā€˜yathābhÅ«taį¹ jānāmi passāmÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I truly know and see!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ samāhito yathābhÅ«taį¹ jānāti passati. Itā€™s only natural to truly know and see when your mind is immersed in samādhi.

YathābhÅ«taį¹, bhikkhave, jānato passato na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When you truly know and see you need not make a wish:

ā€˜nibbindāmi virajjāmÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I become disillusioned and dispassionate!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ jānaį¹ passaį¹ nibbindati virajjati. Itā€™s only natural to become disillusioned and dispassionate when you truly know and see.

Nibbinnassa, bhikkhave, virattassa na cetanāya karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹: When youā€™re disillusioned and dispassionate you need not make a wish:

ā€˜vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹ sacchikaromÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜May I realize the knowledge and vision of freedom!ā€™

Dhammatā esā, bhikkhave, yaį¹ nibbinno viratto vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹ sacchikaroti. Itā€™s only natural to realize the knowledge and vision of freedom when youā€™re disillusioned and dispassionate.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, nibbidāvirāgo vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanattho vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanānisaį¹so; And so, mendicants, the knowledge and vision of freedom is the purpose and benefit of disillusionment and dispassion.

yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanaį¹ nibbidāvirāgatthaį¹ nibbidāvirāgānisaį¹saį¹; Disillusionment and dispassion is the purpose and benefit of truly knowing and seeing.

samādhi yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanattho yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡adassanānisaį¹so; Truly knowing and seeing is the purpose and benefit of immersion.

sukhaį¹ samādhatthaį¹ samādhānisaį¹saį¹; Immersion is the purpose and benefit of bliss.

passaddhi sukhatthā sukhānisaį¹sā; Bliss is the purpose and benefit of tranquility.

pÄ«ti passaddhatthā passaddhānisaį¹sā; Tranquility is the purpose and benefit of rapture.

pāmojjaį¹ pÄ«tatthaį¹ pÄ«tānisaį¹saį¹; Rapture is the purpose and benefit of joy.

avippaį¹­isāro pāmojjattho pāmojjānisaį¹so; Joy is the purpose and benefit of not having regrets.

kusalāni sÄ«lāni avippaį¹­isāratthāni avippaį¹­isārānisaį¹sāni. Not having regrets is the purpose and benefit of skillful ethics.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammā dhamme abhisandenti, dhammā dhamme paripÅ«renti apārā pāraį¹ gamanāyāā€ti. And so, mendicants, good qualities flow on and fill up from one to the other, for going from the near shore to the far shore.ā€
