Santavimokkhasutta Inspiring All Around: the Peaceful Liberations

ā€œSaddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti, no ca sÄ«lavā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œA mendicant is faithful, but not ethical. ā€¦

sÄ«lavā ca, no ca bahussuto ā€¦ theyā€™re not learned. ā€¦

bahussuto ca, no ca dhammakathiko ā€¦ theyā€™re not a Dhamma speaker ā€¦

dhammakathiko ca, no ca parisāvacaro ā€¦ they donā€™t frequent assemblies ā€¦

parisāvacaro ca, no ca visārado parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti ā€¦ they donā€™t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance ā€¦

visārado ca parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, no ca vinayadharo ā€¦ theyā€™re not an expert in the training ā€¦

vinayadharo ca, no ca āraƱƱiko pantasenāsano ā€¦ they donā€™t stay in the wilderness, in remote lodgings ā€¦

āraƱƱiko ca pantasenāsano, no ca ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā te kāyena phusitvā viharati ā€¦ they donā€™t have direct meditative experience of the peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending form ā€¦

ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā te ca kāyena phusitvā viharati, no ca āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. they donā€™t realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Evaį¹ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. So theyā€™re incomplete in that respect,

Tena taį¹ aį¹…gaį¹ paripÅ«retabbaį¹: and should fulfill it, thinking:

ā€˜How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the formless liberations, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements?ā€™

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisāvacaro ca, visārado ca parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, vinayadharo ca, āraƱƱiko ca pantasenāsano, ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā te ca kāyena phusitvā viharati, āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati; When theyā€™re faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the monastic law, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the formless liberations, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements,

evaį¹ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. theyā€™re complete in that respect.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samantapāsādiko ca hoti sabbākāraparipÅ«ro cāā€ti. A mendicant who has these ten qualities is impressive all around, and is complete in every respect.ā€
