Vijjāsutta Inspiring All Around: the Three Knowledges

ā€œSaddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti, no ca sÄ«lavā. ā€œA mendicant is faithful, but not ethical.

Evaį¹ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. So theyā€™re incomplete in that respect,

Tena taį¹ aį¹…gaį¹ paripÅ«retabbaį¹: and should fulfill it, thinking:

ā€˜kintāhaį¹ saddho ca assaį¹ sÄ«lavā cāā€™ti. ā€˜How can I become faithful and ethical?ā€™

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, evaį¹ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. When the mendicant is faithful and ethical, theyā€™re complete in that respect.

Saddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti sÄ«lavā ca, no ca bahussuto bahussuto ca, A mendicant is faithful and ethical, but not learned ā€¦

no ca dhammakathiko ā€¦peā€¦ theyā€™re not a Dhamma speaker ā€¦

dhammakathiko ca, no ca parisāvacaro parisāvacaro ca, they donā€™t frequent assemblies ā€¦

no ca visārado parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti visārado ca parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, they donā€™t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance ā€¦

no ca vinayadharo vinayadharo ca, theyā€™re not an expert in the monastic law ā€¦

no ca anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹ dvepi jātiyo ā€¦peā€¦ iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati. AnekavihitaƱca ā€¦peā€¦ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, they donā€™t recollect their many kinds of past lives ā€¦

no ca dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena ā€¦peā€¦ yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti dibbena ca cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena ā€¦peā€¦ they donā€™t, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, see sentient beings passing away and being reborn ā€¦

yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti, no ca āsavānaį¹ khayā ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. they donā€™t realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisāvacaro ca, visārado ca parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, vinayadharo ca, anekavihitaƱca pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹ dvepi jātiyo ā€¦peā€¦ iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, dibbena ca cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena ā€¦peā€¦ yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti, āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. When they are faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who recollects their many kinds of past lives, one who with clairvoyance that surpasses the human sees sentient beings passing away and being reborn, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements,

Evaį¹ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. theyā€™re complete in that respect.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samantapāsādiko ca hoti sabbākāraparipÅ«ro cāā€ti. A mendicant who has these ten qualities is impressive all around, and is complete in every respect.ā€

Tassuddānaį¹

Kimatthiyaį¹ cetanā ca,

tayo upanisāpi ca;

Samādhi sāriputto ca,

jhānaį¹ santena vijjayāti.
