PaƱcaį¹…gasutta Five Factors

ā€œPaƱcaį¹…gavippahÄ«no, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gasamannāgato imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ā€˜kevalÄ« vusitavā uttamapurisoā€™ti vuccati. ā€œMendicants, in this teaching and training a mendicant who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gavippahÄ«no hoti? And how has a mendicant given up five factors?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kāmacchando pahÄ«no hoti, byāpādo pahÄ«no hoti, thinamiddhaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ hoti, vicikicchā pahÄ«nā hoti. Itā€™s when a mendicant has given up sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gavippahÄ«no hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant has given up five factors.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gasamannāgato hoti? And how does a mendicant have five factors?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sÄ«lakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena paƱƱākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti. Itā€™s when a mendicant has the entire spectrum of an adeptā€™s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gasamannāgato hoti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant has five factors.

PaƱcaį¹…gavippahÄ«no kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱcaį¹…gasamannāgato imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ā€˜kevalÄ« vusitavā uttamapurisoā€™ti vuccati. In this teaching and training a mendicant who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.

Kāmacchando ca byāpādo, Sensual desire, ill will,

thinamiddhaƱca bhikkhuno; dullness and drowsiness,

Uddhaccaį¹ vicikicchā ca, restlessness, and doubt

sabbasova na vijjati. are not found in a mendicant at all.

Asekhena ca sīlena, One like this is accomplished

asekhena samādhinā; in an adeptā€™s ethics,

Vimuttiyā ca sampanno, an adeptā€™s immersion,

Ʊāį¹‡ena ca tathāvidho. and freedom and knowledge.

Sa ve paƱcaį¹…gasampanno, Possessing these five factors,

paƱca aį¹…ge vivajjayaį¹; and rid of five factors,

Imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye, in this teaching and training

kevalÄ« iti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. theyā€™re called ā€˜consummateā€™.ā€
