ā€œSÄ«ho, bhikkhave, migarājā sāyanhasamayaį¹ āsayā nikkhamati. ā€œMendicants, towards evening the lion, king of beasts, emerges from his den,

Āsayā nikkhamitvā vijambhati. yawns,

Vijambhitvā samantā catuddisaį¹ anuviloketi. looks all around the four quarters,

Samantā catuddisaį¹ anuviloketvā tikkhattuį¹ sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati. and roars his lionā€™s roar three times.

Tikkhattuį¹ sÄ«hanādaį¹ naditvā gocarāya pakkamati. Then he sets out on the hunt.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

ā€˜Māhaį¹ khuddake pāį¹‡e visamagate saį¹…ghātaį¹ āpādesinā€™ti. ā€˜May I not injure any little creatures on unclear ground.ā€™

ā€˜SÄ«hoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, tathāgatassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹ arahato sammāsambuddhassa. ā€˜Lionā€™ is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.

Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tathāgato parisāya dhammaį¹ deseti, idamassa hoti sÄ«hanādasmiį¹. When the Realized One teaches Dhamma to an assembly, this is his lionā€™s roar.

Dasayimāni, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalāni, yehi balehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. The Realized One possesses ten powers of a Realized One. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Idha, bhikkhave, tathāgato į¹­hānaƱca į¹­hānato aį¹­į¹­hānaƱca aį¹­į¹­hānato yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Firstly, the Realized One truly understands the possible as possible and the impossible as impossible.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato į¹­hānaƱca į¹­hānato aį¹­į¹­hānaƱca aį¹­į¹­hānato yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. Relying on this he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato atÄ«tānāgatapaccuppannānaį¹ kammasamādānānaį¹ į¹­hānaso hetuso vipākaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the result of deeds undertaken in the past, future, and present in terms of grounds and causes.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato atÄ«tānāgatapaccuppannānaį¹ kammasamādānānaį¹ į¹­hānaso hetuso vipākaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato sabbatthagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands where all paths of practice lead.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato sabbatthagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato anekadhātuį¹ nānādhātuį¹ lokaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the world with its many and diverse elements.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato anekadhātuį¹ nānādhātuį¹ lokaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti ā€¦peā€¦ brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato sattānaį¹ nānādhimuttikataį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the diverse convictions of sentient beings.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato sattānaį¹ nānādhimuttikataį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti ā€¦peā€¦ brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato parasattānaį¹ parapuggalānaį¹ indriyaparopariyattaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the faculties of other sentient beings and other individuals after comprehending them with his mind.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato parasattānaį¹ parapuggalānaį¹ indriyaparopariyattaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti ā€¦peā€¦ brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato jhānavimokkhasamādhisamāpattÄ«naį¹ saį¹…kilesaį¹ vodānaį¹ vuį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands corruption, cleansing, and emergence regarding the absorptions, liberations, immersions, and attainments.

Yampi ā€¦peā€¦ pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti ā€¦peā€¦ brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Furthermore, the Realized One recollects many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. He remembers: ā€˜There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.ā€™ Thus he recollects his many past lives, with features and details.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹ dvepi jātiyo ā€¦peā€¦ iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti: ā€˜ime vata bhonto sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā, te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā; ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«sucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ anupavādakā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā, te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti. Furthermore, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, the Realized One sees sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. He understands how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds. ā€˜These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They denounced the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never denounced the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€™ And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, he sees sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. He understands how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena ā€¦peā€¦ yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tathāgato āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, the Realized One has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Yampi, bhikkhave, tathāgato āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati, idampi, bhikkhave, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dasa tathāgatassa tathāgatabalāni, yehi balehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavattetÄ«ā€ti. These are the ten powers of a Realized One that the Realized One possesses. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.ā€
