Adhivuttipadasutta Hypotheses

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œYe te, ānanda, dhammā tesaį¹ tesaį¹ adhivuttipadānaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikiriyāya saį¹vattanti, visārado ahaį¹, ānanda, tattha paį¹­ijānāmi. ā€œÄ€nanda, I claim to be assured regarding the teachings that lead to realizing by insight the various different hypotheses.

ā€˜Tesaį¹ tesaį¹ tathā tathā dhammaį¹ desetuį¹ yathā yathā paį¹­ipanno santaį¹ vā atthÄ«ti Ʊassati, asantaį¹ vā natthÄ«ti Ʊassati, hÄ«naį¹ vā hÄ«nanti Ʊassati, paį¹‡Ä«taį¹ vā paį¹‡Ä«tanti Ʊassati, sauttaraį¹ vā sauttaranti Ʊassati, anuttaraį¹ vā anuttaranti Ʊassati; So I am able to teach the Dhamma in appropriate ways to different people. Practicing accordingly, when something exists theyā€™ll know it exists. When it doesnā€™t exist theyā€™ll know it doesnā€™t exist. When something is inferior theyā€™ll know itā€™s inferior. When itā€™s superior theyā€™ll know itā€™s superior. When something is not supreme theyā€™ll know itā€™s not supreme. When it is supreme theyā€™ll know itā€™s supreme.

yathā yathā vā pana taį¹ Ʊāteyyaį¹ vā daį¹­į¹­heyyaį¹ vā sacchikareyyaį¹ vā tathā tathā Ʊassati vā dakkhati vā sacchikarissati vāā€™ti į¹­hānametaį¹ vijjati. And they will know or see or realize it in whatever way it should be known or seen or realized. This is possible.

Etadānuttariyaį¹, ānanda, Ʊāį¹‡Änaį¹ yadidaį¹ tattha tattha yathābhÅ«taƱāį¹‡aį¹. But this is the unsurpassable knowledge, that is: truly knowing each and every case.

Etasmā cāhaį¹, ānanda, Ʊāį¹‡Ä aƱƱaį¹ Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ uttaritaraį¹ vā paį¹‡Ä«tataraį¹ vā natthÄ«ti vadāmi. And Ānanda, I say that there is no other knowledge better or finer than this.

Dasayimāni, ānanda, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalāni, yehi balehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. The Realized One possesses ten powers of a Realized One. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Katamāni dasa? What ten?

Idhānanda, tathāgato į¹­hānaƱca į¹­hānato aį¹­į¹­hānaƱca aį¹­į¹­hānato yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Firstly, the Realized One truly understands the possible as possible, and the impossible as impossible.

Yampānanda, tathāgato į¹­hānaƱca į¹­hānato aį¹­į¹­hānaƱca aį¹­į¹­hānato yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, idampānanda, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. Relying on this he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato atÄ«tānāgatapaccuppannānaį¹ kammasamādānānaį¹ į¹­hānaso hetuso vipākaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the result of deeds undertaken in the past, future, and present in terms of grounds and causes.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato sabbatthagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands where all paths of practice lead.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato anekadhātuį¹ nānādhātuį¹ lokaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the world with its many and diverse elements.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato sattānaį¹ nānādhimuttikataį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the diverse convictions of sentient beings.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato parasattānaį¹ parapuggalānaį¹ indriyaparopariyattaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands the faculties of other sentient beings and other individuals after comprehending them with his mind.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato jhānavimokkhasamādhisamāpattÄ«naį¹ saį¹…kilesaį¹ vodānaį¹ vuį¹­į¹­hānaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. Furthermore, the Realized One truly understands corruption, cleansing, and emergence regarding the absorptions, liberations, immersions, and attainments.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹ dvepi jātiyo ā€¦peā€¦ iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati. Furthermore, the Realized One recollects many kinds of past lives, with features and details.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena ā€¦peā€¦ yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti. Furthermore, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, the Realized One sees sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. He understands how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

Yampānanda ā€¦peā€¦ idampānanda ā€¦peā€¦. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Puna caparaį¹, ānanda, tathāgato āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, the Realized One has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and lives having realized it with his own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Yampānanda, tathāgato āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Idampānanda, tathāgatassa tathāgatabalaį¹ hoti, yaį¹ balaį¹ āgamma tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavatteti. Since he truly understands this, this is a power of the Realized One. ā€¦

Imāni kho, ānanda, dasa tathāgatassa tathāgatabalāni, yehi balehi samannāgato tathāgato āsabhaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ paį¹­ijānāti, parisāsu sÄ«hanādaį¹ nadati, brahmacakkaį¹ pavattetÄ«ā€ti. These are the ten powers of a Realized One that the Realized One possesses. With these he claims the bullā€™s place, roars his lionā€™s roar in the assemblies, and turns the divine wheel.ā€
