UpasampadÄsutta Ordination
āKatihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannÄgatena bhikkhunÄ upasampÄdetabbanāti? āSir, how many qualities should a mendicant have to give ordination?ā
āDasahi kho, upÄli, dhammehi samannÄgatena bhikkhunÄ upasampÄdetabbaį¹. āUpÄli, a mendicant should have ten qualities to give ordination.
Katamehi dasahi? What ten?
IdhupÄli, bhikkhu sÄ«lavÄ hoti, pÄtimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ÄcÄragocarasampanno aį¹umattesu vajjesu bhayadassÄvÄ«, samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu; Itās when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken.
bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathÄrÅ«pÄssa dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ; Theyāre very learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
pÄtimokkhaį¹ kho panassa vitthÄrena svÄgataį¹ hoti suvibhattaį¹ suppavattaį¹ suvinicchitaį¹ suttaso anubyaƱjanaso; Both monastic codes have been passed down to them in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material.
paį¹ibalo hoti gilÄnaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄtuį¹ vÄ upaį¹į¹hÄpetuį¹ vÄ; Theyāre able to care for the sick or get someone else to do so.
paį¹ibalo hoti anabhiratiį¹ vÅ«pakÄsetuį¹ vÄ vÅ«pakÄsÄpetuį¹ vÄ; Theyāre able to settle dissatisfaction or get someone else to do so.
paį¹ibalo hoti uppannaį¹ kukkuccaį¹ dhammato vinodetuį¹; Theyāre able to dispel remorse when it has come up.
paį¹ibalo hoti uppannaį¹ diį¹į¹higataį¹ dhammato vivecetuį¹; Theyāre able to rationally dissuade someone from misconceptions that come up.
paį¹ibalo hoti adhisÄ«le samÄdapetuį¹; Theyāre able to encourage someone in the higher ethics,

Imehi kho, upÄli, dasahi dhammehi samannÄgatena bhikkhunÄ upasampÄdetabbanāti. A mendicant should have these ten qualities to give ordination.ā
