Upasampadāsutta Ordination

ā€œKatihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā upasampādetabbanā€ti? ā€œSir, how many qualities should a mendicant have to give ordination?ā€

ā€œDasahi kho, upāli, dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā upasampādetabbaį¹. ā€œUpāli, a mendicant should have ten qualities to give ordination.

Katamehi dasahi? What ten?

Idhupāli, bhikkhu sÄ«lavā hoti, pātimokkhasaį¹varasaį¹vuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno aį¹‡umattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvÄ«, samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu; Itā€™s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyā€™ve undertaken.

bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathārÅ«pāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā; Theyā€™re very learned, remembering and keeping what theyā€™ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

pātimokkhaį¹ kho panassa vitthārena svāgataį¹ hoti suvibhattaį¹ suppavattaį¹ suvinicchitaį¹ suttaso anubyaƱjanaso; Both monastic codes have been passed down to them in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material.

paį¹­ibalo hoti gilānaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hātuį¹ vā upaį¹­į¹­hāpetuį¹ vā; Theyā€™re able to care for the sick or get someone else to do so.

paį¹­ibalo hoti anabhiratiį¹ vÅ«pakāsetuį¹ vā vÅ«pakāsāpetuį¹ vā; Theyā€™re able to settle dissatisfaction or get someone else to do so.

paį¹­ibalo hoti uppannaį¹ kukkuccaį¹ dhammato vinodetuį¹; Theyā€™re able to dispel remorse when it has come up.

paį¹­ibalo hoti uppannaį¹ diį¹­į¹­higataį¹ dhammato vivecetuį¹; Theyā€™re able to rationally dissuade someone from misconceptions that come up.

paį¹­ibalo hoti adhisÄ«le samādapetuį¹; Theyā€™re able to encourage someone in the higher ethics,

paį¹­ibalo hoti adhicitte samādapetuį¹; the higher mind,

paį¹­ibalo hoti adhipaƱƱāya samādapetuį¹. and the higher wisdom.

Imehi kho, upāli, dasahi dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā upasampādetabbanā€ti. A mendicant should have these ten qualities to give ordination.ā€
