kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ghabhedo saį¹
ghabhedoāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of āschism in the Saį¹
ghaā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, saį¹
gho bhinno hotÄ«āti? How is schism in the Saį¹
gha defined?ā
āIdhÄnanda, bhikkhÅ« adhammaį¹ dhammoti dÄ«penti, dhammaį¹ adhammoti dÄ«penti, avinayaį¹ vinayoti dÄ«penti ā¦peā¦ āÄnanda, itās when a mendicant explains what is not the teaching as the teaching ā¦

Te imehi dasahi vatthÅ«hi avakassanti apakassanti Äveni kammÄni karonti Äveni pÄtimokkhaį¹ uddisanti. On these ten grounds they split off and go their own way. They perform legal acts autonomously and recite the monastic code autonomously.

gho bhinno hotÄ«āti. That is how schism in the Saį¹
gha is defined.ā
āSamaggaį¹ pana, bhante, saį¹
ghaį¹ bhinditvÄ kiį¹ so pasavatÄ«āti? āBut sir, what does someone who has split a harmonious Saį¹
gha create?ā
āKappaį¹į¹hikaį¹, Änanda, kibbisaį¹ pasavatÄ«āti. āThey create a sin that lasts for an eon.ā
āKiį¹ pana, bhante, kappaį¹į¹hikaį¹ kibbisanāti? āBut sir, what is the sin that lasts for an eon?ā
āKappaį¹, Änanda, nirayamhi paccatÄ«tiāāThey burn in hell for an eon, Änanda.
ÄpÄyiko nerayiko, A schismatic remains for the eon
Kappaį¹į¹ho saį¹
ghabhedako; in a place of loss, in hell.
Vaggarato adhammaį¹į¹ho, Taking a stand against the teaching,
YogakkhemÄ padhaį¹sati; favoring factions, they ruin their sanctuary.
