Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kusinÄrÄyaį¹ viharati baliharaį¹e vanasaį¹įøe. At one time the Buddha was staying near KusinÄrÄ, in the Forest of Offerings.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āCodakena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunÄ paraį¹ codetukÄmena paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ paccavekkhitvÄ paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpetvÄ paro codetabbo. āMendicants, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should first check five things in themselves and establish five things in themselves.

Codakena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunÄ paraį¹ codetukÄmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: A mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:
āparisuddhakÄyasamÄcÄro nu khomhi, parisuddhenamhi kÄyasamÄcÄrena samannÄgato acchiddena appaį¹imaį¹sena. āIs my bodily behavior pure? Do I have pure bodily behavior that is impeccable and irreproachable?
Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu noāti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā
No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu parisuddhakÄyasamÄcÄro hoti parisuddhena kÄyasamÄcÄrena samannÄgato acchiddena appaį¹imaį¹sena, tassa bhavanti vattÄro: If itās not, there will be people who say:
āiį¹
gha tÄva ÄyasmÄ kÄyikaį¹ sikkhassÅ«āti, itissa bhavanti vattÄro. āCome on, venerable, train your own bodily behavior first.ā
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, codakena bhikkhunÄ paraį¹ codetukÄmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: Furthermore, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:
āparisuddhavacÄ«samÄcÄro nu khomhi, parisuddhenamhi vacÄ«samÄcÄrena samannÄgato acchiddena appaį¹imaį¹sena. āIs my verbal behavior pure? Do I have pure verbal behavior that is impeccable and irreproachable?

gha tÄva ÄyasmÄ sabrahmacÄrÄ«su mettaį¹ cittaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpehÄ«āti, itissa bhavanti vattÄro. āCome on, venerable, establish your heart in love for your spiritual companions first.ā

ābahussuto nu khomhi sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathÄrÅ«pÄ me dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ. āAm I very learned, remembering and keeping what Iāve learned? These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. Am I very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically?

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathÄrÅ«pÄssa dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ, tassa bhavanti vattÄro: If itās not, there will be people who say:

gha tÄva ÄyasmÄ Ägamaį¹ pariyÄpuį¹assÅ«āti, itissa bhavanti vattÄro. āCome on, venerable, memorize the scriptures first.ā

āubhayÄni kho pana me pÄtimokkhÄni vitthÄrena svÄgatÄni honti suvibhattÄni suppavattÄ«ni suvinicchitÄni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso. āHave both monastic codes been passed down to me in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, and well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material?

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno ubhayÄni pÄtimokkhÄni vitthÄrena svÄgatÄni honti suvibhattÄni suppavattÄ«ni suvinicchitÄni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso, āidaį¹ panÄyasmÄ, kattha vuttaį¹ bhagavatÄāti, iti puį¹į¹ho na sampÄyissati. If itās not, and if they are unable to respond when asked āVenerable, where was this spoken by the Buddha?ā there will be people who say:

āKÄlena vakkhÄmi, no akÄlena; āI will speak at the right time, not at the wrong time.
bhÅ«tena vakkhÄmi, no abhÅ«tena; I will speak truthfully, not falsely.
saį¹hena vakkhÄmi, no pharusena; I will speak gently, not harshly.
atthasaį¹hitena vakkhÄmi, no anatthasaį¹hitena; I will speak beneficially, not harmfully.
mettacitto vakkhÄmi, no dosantaroātiāI will speak lovingly, not from secret hate.ā
