Kusinārasutta At Kusinārā

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kusinārāyaį¹ viharati baliharaį¹‡e vanasaį¹‡įøe. At one time the Buddha was staying near Kusinārā, in the Forest of Offerings.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œCodakena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ paccavekkhitvā paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hāpetvā paro codetabbo. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should first check five things in themselves and establish five things in themselves.

Katame paƱca dhammā ajjhattaį¹ paccavekkhitabbā? What five things should they check in themselves?

Codakena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: A mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:

ā€˜parisuddhakāyasamācāro nu khomhi, parisuddhenamhi kāyasamācārena samannāgato acchiddena appaį¹­imaį¹sena. ā€˜Is my bodily behavior pure? Do I have pure bodily behavior that is impeccable and irreproachable?

Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udāhu noā€™ti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā€™

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu parisuddhakāyasamācāro hoti parisuddhena kāyasamācārena samannāgato acchiddena appaį¹­imaį¹sena, tassa bhavanti vattāro: If itā€™s not, there will be people who say:

ā€˜iį¹…gha tāva āyasmā kāyikaį¹ sikkhassÅ«ā€™ti, itissa bhavanti vattāro. ā€˜Come on, venerable, train your own bodily behavior first.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, codakena bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: Furthermore, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:

ā€˜parisuddhavacÄ«samācāro nu khomhi, parisuddhenamhi vacÄ«samācārena samannāgato acchiddena appaį¹­imaį¹sena. ā€˜Is my verbal behavior pure? Do I have pure verbal behavior that is impeccable and irreproachable?

Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udāhu noā€™ti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā€™

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu parisuddhavacÄ«samācāro hoti parisuddhena vacÄ«samācārena samannāgato acchiddena appaį¹­imaį¹sena, tassa bhavanti vattāro: If itā€™s not, there will be people who say:

ā€˜iį¹…gha tāva āyasmā vācasikaį¹ sikkhassÅ«ā€™ti, itissa bhavanti vattāro. ā€˜Come on, venerable, train your own verbal behavior first.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, codakena bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: Furthermore, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:

ā€˜mettaį¹ nu kho me cittaį¹ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ sabrahmacārÄ«su anāghātaį¹. ā€˜Is my heart established in love for my spiritual companions, without resentment?

Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udāhu noā€™ti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā€™

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno mettaį¹ cittaį¹ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ hoti sabrahmacārÄ«su anāghātaį¹, tassa bhavanti vattāro: If itā€™s not, there will be people who say:

ā€˜iį¹…gha tāva āyasmā sabrahmacārÄ«su mettaį¹ cittaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hāpehÄ«ā€™ti, itissa bhavanti vattāro. ā€˜Come on, venerable, establish your heart in love for your spiritual companions first.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, codakena bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: Furthermore, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:

ā€˜bahussuto nu khomhi sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathārÅ«pā me dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā. ā€˜Am I very learned, remembering and keeping what Iā€™ve learned? These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatā€™s entirely full and pure. Am I very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically?

Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udāhu noā€™ti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā€™

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāį¹‡Ä majjhekalyāį¹‡Ä pariyosānakalyāį¹‡Ä sātthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathārÅ«pāssa dhammā bahussutā honti dhātā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diį¹­į¹­hiyā suppaį¹­ividdhā, tassa bhavanti vattāro: If itā€™s not, there will be people who say:

ā€˜iį¹…gha tāva āyasmā āgamaį¹ pariyāpuį¹‡assÅ«ā€™ti, itissa bhavanti vattāro. ā€˜Come on, venerable, memorize the scriptures first.ā€™

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, codakena bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena evaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: Furthermore, a mendicant who wants to accuse another should check this:

ā€˜ubhayāni kho pana me pātimokkhāni vitthārena svāgatāni honti suvibhattāni suppavattÄ«ni suvinicchitāni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso. ā€˜Have both monastic codes been passed down to me in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, and well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material?

Saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udāhu noā€™ti? Is this thing found in me or not?ā€™

No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno ubhayāni pātimokkhāni vitthārena svāgatāni honti suvibhattāni suppavattÄ«ni suvinicchitāni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso, ā€˜idaį¹ panāyasmā, kattha vuttaį¹ bhagavatāā€™ti, iti puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyissati. If itā€™s not, and if they are unable to respond when asked ā€œVenerable, where was this spoken by the Buddha?ā€ there will be people who say:

Tassa bhavanti vattāro:

ā€˜iį¹…gha tāva āyasmā vinayaį¹ sikkhassÅ«ā€™ti, itissa bhavanti vattāro. ā€˜Come on, venerable, train in the monastic code first.ā€™

Ime paƱca dhammā ajjhattaį¹ paccavekkhitabbā. These are the five things they should check in themselves.

Katame paƱca dhammā ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā? What five things should they establish in themselves?

ā€˜Kālena vakkhāmi, no akālena; ā€˜I will speak at the right time, not at the wrong time.

bhūtena vakkhāmi, no abhūtena; I will speak truthfully, not falsely.

saį¹‡hena vakkhāmi, no pharusena; I will speak gently, not harshly.

atthasaį¹hitena vakkhāmi, no anatthasaį¹hitena; I will speak beneficially, not harmfully.

mettacitto vakkhāmi, no dosantaroā€™tiā€”I will speak lovingly, not from secret hate.ā€™

ime paƱca dhammā ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā. These are the five things they should establish in themselves.

Codakena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā paraį¹ codetukāmena ime paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ paccavekkhitvā ime paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hāpetvā paro codetabboā€ti. A mendicant who wants to accuse another should first check these five things in themselves and establish these five things in themselves.ā€
