Rājantepurappavesanasutta Entering a Royal Compound

ā€œDasayime, bhikkhave, ādÄ«navā rājantepurappavesane. ā€œMendicants, there are ten drawbacks to entering a royal compound.

Katame dasa? What ten?

Idha, bhikkhave, rājā mahesiyā saddhiį¹ nisinno hoti. Firstly, a king is sitting with his chief queen

Tatra bhikkhu pavisati. when a monk enters.

MahesÄ« vā bhikkhuį¹ disvā sitaį¹ pātukaroti, bhikkhu vā mahesiį¹ disvā sitaį¹ pātukaroti. When the queen sees the monk she smiles, or when the monk sees the queen he smiles.

Tattha raƱƱo evaį¹ hoti: So the king thinks:

ā€˜addhā imesaį¹ kataį¹ vā karissanti vāā€™ti. ā€˜Theyā€™ve done it for sure, or they will do it.ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the first drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, rājā bahukicco bahukaraį¹‡Ä«yo aƱƱataraį¹ itthiį¹ gantvā na sarati: Furthermore, a king has many duties, and much to do. He has sex with one of the women but doesnā€™t remember.

ā€˜sā tena gabbhaį¹ gaį¹‡hātiā€™. She gets pregnant from that.

Tattha raƱƱo evaį¹ hoti: So the king thinks:

ā€˜na kho idha aƱƱo koci pavisati, aƱƱatra pabbajitena. ā€˜No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the second drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, raƱƱo antepure aƱƱataraį¹ ratanaį¹ nassati. Furthermore, a gem is lost somewhere in the royal compound.

Tattha raƱƱo evaį¹ hoti: So the king thinks:

ā€˜na kho idha aƱƱo koci pavisati, aƱƱatra pabbajitena. ā€˜No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, tatiyo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the third drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, raƱƱo antepure abbhantarā guyhamantā bahiddhā sambhedaį¹ gacchanti. Furthermore, secret deliberations in the royal compound are leaked outside.

Tattha raƱƱo evaį¹ hoti: So the king thinks:

ā€˜na kho idha aƱƱo koci pavisati, aƱƱatra pabbajitena. ā€˜No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, catuttho ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the fourth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, raƱƱo antepure pitā vā puttaį¹ pattheti putto vā pitaraį¹ pattheti. Furthermore, in a royal compound, a father longs for their son, or a son longs for his father.

Tesaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: They think:

ā€˜na kho idha aƱƱo koci pavisati, aƱƱatra pabbajitena. ā€˜No-one else has entered here, except for that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the fifth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, rājā nÄ«caį¹­į¹­hāniyaį¹ ucce į¹­hāne į¹­hapeti. Furthermore, the king promotes someone to a higher position.

Yesaį¹ taį¹ amanāpaį¹ tesaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: Those who are upset by this think:

ā€˜rājā kho pabbajitena saį¹saį¹­į¹­ho. ā€˜The king is close to that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, chaį¹­į¹­ho ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the sixth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, rājā uccaį¹­į¹­hāniyaį¹ nÄ«ce į¹­hāne į¹­hapeti. Furthermore, the king demotes someone to a lower position.

Yesaį¹ taį¹ amanāpaį¹ tesaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: Those who are upset by this think:

ā€˜rājā kho pabbajitena saį¹saį¹­į¹­ho. ā€˜The king is close to that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, sattamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the seventh drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, rājā akāle senaį¹ uyyojeti. Furthermore, the king dispatches the army at the wrong time.

Yesaį¹ taį¹ amanāpaį¹ tesaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: Those who are upset by this think:

ā€˜rājā kho pabbajitena saį¹saį¹­į¹­ho. ā€˜The king is close to that monk.

Siyā nu kho pabbajitassa kammanā€™ti. Could this be the monkā€™s doing?ā€™

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­hamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the eighth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, rājā kāle senaį¹ uyyojetvā antarāmaggato nivattāpeti. Furthermore, the king dispatches the army at the right time, but orders it to turn back while still on the road.

Yesaį¹ taį¹ amanāpaį¹ tesaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: Those who are upset by this think:

ā€˜rājā kho pabbajitena saį¹saį¹­į¹­ho. ā€˜The king is close to that monk.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, navamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the ninth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, raƱƱo antepuraį¹ hatthisammaddaį¹ assasammaddaį¹ rathasammaddaį¹ rajanÄ«yāni rÅ«pasaddagandharasaphoį¹­į¹­habbāni, yāni na pabbajitassa sāruppāni. Furthermore, in the royal compound there is a trampling of elephants, horses, and chariots, as well as arousing sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches that do not befit a monk.

Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dasamo ādÄ«navo rājantepurappavesane. This is the tenth drawback of entering a royal compound.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dasa ādÄ«navā rājantepurappavesaneā€ti. These are the ten drawbacks of entering a royal compound.ā€
