Mahālisutta With Mahāli

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Atha kho mahāli licchavi yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahāli licchavi bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Mahāli the Licchavi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyāā€ti? ā€œWhat is the cause, sir, what is the reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds?ā€

ā€œLobho kho, mahāli, hetu, lobho paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyā. ā€œGreed is a cause, Mahāli, greed is a reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds.

Doso kho, mahāli, hetu, doso paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyā. Hate is a cause of bad deeds ā€¦

Moho kho, mahāli, hetu, moho paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyā. Delusion is a cause of bad deeds ā€¦

Ayoniso manasikāro kho, mahāli, hetu, ayoniso manasikāro paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyā. Irrational application of mind is a cause of bad deeds ā€¦

Micchāpaį¹‡ihitaį¹ kho, mahāli, cittaį¹ hetu, micchāpaį¹‡ihitaį¹ cittaį¹ paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyāti. A wrongly directed mind is a cause of bad deeds ā€¦

Ayaį¹ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo pāpassa kammassa kiriyāya pāpassa kammassa pavattiyāā€ti. This is the cause, Mahāli, this is the reason for doing bad deeds, for performing bad deeds.ā€

ā€œKo pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyāā€ti? ā€œWhat is the cause, sir, what is the reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds?ā€

ā€œAlobho kho, mahāli, hetu, alobho paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. ā€œContentment is a cause, Mahāli, contentment is a reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds.

Adoso kho, mahāli, hetu, adoso paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. Love is a cause of good deeds ā€¦

Amoho kho, mahāli, hetu, amoho paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. Understanding is a cause of good deeds ā€¦

Yoniso manasikāro kho, mahāli, hetu, yoniso manasikāro paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. Rational application of mind is a cause of good deeds ā€¦

Sammāpaį¹‡ihitaį¹ kho, mahāli, cittaį¹ hetu, sammāpaį¹‡ihitaį¹ cittaį¹ paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. A rightly directed mind is a cause of good deeds ā€¦

Ayaį¹ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa kiriyāya kalyāį¹‡assa kammassa pavattiyā. This is the cause, Mahāli, this is the reason for doing good deeds, for performing good deeds.

Ime ca, mahāli, dasa dhammā loke na saį¹vijjeyyuį¹, nayidha paƱƱāyetha adhammacariyāvisamacariyāti vā dhammacariyāsamacariyāti vā. If these ten things were not found in the world, we wouldnā€™t see either unprincipled and immoral conduct, or principled and moral conduct.

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, ime dasa dhammā loke saį¹vijjanti, tasmā paƱƱāyati adhammacariyāvisamacariyāti vā dhammacariyāsamacariyāti vāā€ti. But since these ten things are found in the world, we see both unprincipled and immoral conduct, and principled and moral conduct.ā€
