Pabbajitaabhiį¹hasutta Ten Regular Reflections for a Renunciate
āDasayime, bhikkhave, dhammÄ pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbÄ. āThere are these ten things, monks, that one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on.āMendicants, one who has gone forth should often review these ten things.

āVevaį¹į¹iyamhi ajjhupagatoāti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āI have become one who has no (distinctive) appearanceā, one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.One who has gone forth should often review this: āI have secured freedom from class.ā
āParapaį¹ibaddhÄ me jÄ«vikÄāti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āI am bound to others for my livelihoodā, one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āMy livelihood is tied up with others.ā
āAƱƱo me Äkappo karaį¹Ä«yoāti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āI should comport myself differentlyā, one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āMy behavior should be different.ā
āKacci nu kho me attÄ sÄ«lato na upavadatÄ«āti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āCan I myself find no fault with my virtue?ā one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āI hope thereās no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct?ā
āKacci nu kho maį¹ anuvicca viĆ±Ć±Å« sabrahmacÄrÄ« sÄ«lato na upavadantÄ«āti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āWill my wise companions in the spiritual life, after testing me, find no fault with my virtue?ā, one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āI hope that, after examination, sensible spiritual companions donāt reproach any aspect of my ethics?ā
āSabbehi me piyehi manÄpehi nÄnÄbhÄvo vinÄbhÄvoāti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āThere is alteration in, and separation from, all that is dear and appealing to meā, one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āI must be parted and separated from all I hold dear and beloved.ā
āKammassakomhi kammadÄyÄdo kammayoni kammabandhu kammapaį¹isaraį¹o, āIt is actions that I own, it is actions that I am heir to, it is actions that I am born from, actions are my kinsfolk, actions are my refuge -āI am the owner of my deeds and heir to my deeds. Deeds are my womb, my relative, and my refuge.

āKathaį¹bhÅ«tassa me rattindivÄ vÄ«tivattantÄ«āti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āIn what way do the nights and days pass for me?ā one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āAs the days and nights pass by, what sort of person am I becoming?ā
āKacci nu kho ahaį¹ suƱƱÄgÄre abhiramÄmÄ«āti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āDo I delight in empty places?ā one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āDo I love to stay in empty huts?ā
āAtthi nu kho me uttari manussadhammo alamariyaƱÄį¹adassanaviseso adhigato, yenÄhaį¹ pacchime kÄle sabrahmacÄrÄ«hi puį¹į¹ho na maį¹
ku bhavissÄmÄ«āti pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. āHas a state beyond (ordinary) human beings - the distinction of what is truly noble knowledge and seeing - been attained by me? Ā° Will I at the end, when questioned by my companions in the spiritual life, not be embarrassed?ā one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on this.āDo I have any superhuman distinctions in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, so that when my spiritual companions question me on my deathbed I will not be embarrassed?ā
Ime kho, bhikkhave, dasa dhammÄ pabbajitena abhiį¹haį¹ paccavekkhitabbÄāti. These are the ten things, monks, that one who has gone forth should frequently reflect on.āOne who has gone forth should often review these ten things.ā
