Pabbajitaabhiį¹‡hasutta Ten Regular Reflections for a Renunciate

ā€œDasayime, bhikkhave, dhammā pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbā. ā€œMendicants, one who has gone forth should often review these ten things.

Katame dasa? What ten?

ā€˜Vevaį¹‡į¹‡iyamhi ajjhupagatoā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. One who has gone forth should often review this: ā€˜I have secured freedom from class.ā€™

ā€˜Parapaį¹­ibaddhā me jÄ«vikāā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. ā€˜My livelihood is tied up with others.ā€™

ā€˜AƱƱo me ākappo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. ā€˜My behavior should be different.ā€™

ā€˜Sabbehi me piyehi manāpehi nānābhāvo vinābhāvoā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. ā€˜I must be parted and separated from all I hold dear and beloved.ā€™

ā€˜Kammassakomhi kammadāyādo kammayoni kammabandhu kammapaį¹­isaraį¹‡o, ā€˜I am the owner of my deeds and heir to my deeds. Deeds are my womb, my relative, and my refuge.

yaį¹ kammaį¹ karissāmi kalyāį¹‡aį¹ vā pāpakaį¹ vā tassa dāyādo bhavissāmÄ«ā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. I shall be the heir of whatever deeds I do, whether good or bad.ā€™

ā€˜Kathaį¹bhÅ«tassa me rattindivā vÄ«tivattantÄ«ā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. ā€˜As the days and nights flit by, what sort of person am I becoming?ā€™

ā€˜Atthi nu kho me uttari manussadhammo alamariyaƱāį¹‡adassanaviseso adhigato, yenāhaį¹ pacchime kāle sabrahmacārÄ«hi puį¹­į¹­ho na maį¹…ku bhavissāmÄ«ā€™ti pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹. ā€˜Do I have any superhuman distinctions in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, so that when my spiritual companions question me on my deathbed I will not be embarrassed?ā€™

Ime kho, bhikkhave, dasa dhammā pabbajitena abhiį¹‡haį¹ paccavekkhitabbāā€ti. One who has gone forth should often review these ten things.ā€
