Tayodhammasutta Three Things

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, dhammā loke na saį¹vijjeyyuį¹, na tathāgato loke uppajjeyya arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho, na tathāgatappavedito dhammavinayo loke dibbeyya. ā€œMendicants, if three things were not found, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha would not arise in the world, and the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One would not shine in the world.

Jāti ca, jarā ca, maraį¹‡aƱcaā€”Rebirth, old age, and death.

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhammā loke na saį¹vijjeyyuį¹, na tathāgato loke uppajjeyya arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho, na tathāgatappavedito dhammavinayo loke dibbeyya. If these three things were not found, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha would not arise in the world, and the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One would not shine in the world.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, ime tayo dhammā loke saį¹vijjanti tasmā tathāgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho, tasmā tathāgatappavedito dhammavinayo loke dibbati. But since these three things are found, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arises in the world, and the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One shines in the world.

Ahirikoyaį¹, bhikkhave, anottāpÄ« pamatto hoti. Mendicants, someone who lacks conscience and prudence is negligent.

So pamatto samāno abhabbo anādariyaį¹ pahātuį¹ dovacassataį¹ pahātuį¹ pāpamittataį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™re negligent you canā€™t give up disregard, being hard to admonish, and having bad friends.

So pāpamitto samāno abhabbo assaddhiyaį¹ pahātuį¹ avadaƱƱutaį¹ pahātuį¹ kosajjaį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™ve got bad friends you canā€™t give up faithlessness, uncharitableness, and laziness.

So kusÄ«to samāno abhabbo uddhaccaį¹ pahātuį¹ asaį¹varaį¹ pahātuį¹ dussilyaį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™re lazy you canā€™t give up restlessness, lack of restraint, and unethical conduct.

So dussÄ«lo samāno abhabbo ariyānaį¹ adassanakamyataį¹ pahātuį¹ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataį¹ pahātuį¹ upārambhacittataį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™re unethical you canā€™t give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind.

So upārambhacitto samāno abhabbo muį¹­į¹­hassaccaį¹ pahātuį¹ asampajaƱƱaį¹ pahātuį¹ cetaso vikkhepaį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™ve got a fault-finding mind you canā€™t give up unmindfulness, lack of situational awareness, and a scattered mind.

So vikkhittacitto samāno abhabbo ayonisomanasikāraį¹ pahātuį¹ kummaggasevanaį¹ pahātuį¹ cetaso lÄ«nattaį¹ pahātuį¹. When your mind is scattered you canā€™t give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.

So lÄ«nacitto samāno abhabbo sakkāyadiį¹­į¹­hiį¹ pahātuį¹ vicikicchaį¹ pahātuį¹ sÄ«labbataparāmāsaį¹ pahātuį¹. When your mind is sluggish you canā€™t give up substantialist view, doubt, and misapprehension of precepts and observances.

So vicikiccho samāno abhabbo rāgaį¹ pahātuį¹ dosaį¹ pahātuį¹ mohaį¹ pahātuį¹. When you have doubts you canā€™t give up greed, hate, and delusion.

So rāgaį¹ appahāya dosaį¹ appahāya mohaį¹ appahāya abhabbo jātiį¹ pahātuį¹ jaraį¹ pahātuį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ pahātuį¹. Without giving up greed, hate, and delusion you canā€™t give up rebirth, old age, and death.

So kalyāį¹‡amitto samāno bhabbo assaddhiyaį¹ pahātuį¹ avadaƱƱutaį¹ pahātuį¹ kosajjaį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™ve got good friends you can give up faithlessness, uncharitableness, and laziness.

So āraddhavÄ«riyo samāno bhabbo uddhaccaį¹ pahātuį¹ asaį¹varaį¹ pahātuį¹ dussilyaį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™re energetic you can give up restlessness, lack of restraint, and unethical conduct.

So sÄ«lavā samāno bhabbo ariyānaį¹ adassanakamyataį¹ pahātuį¹ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataį¹ pahātuį¹ upārambhacittataį¹ pahātuį¹. When youā€™re ethical you can give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind.

So anupārambhacitto samāno bhabbo muį¹­į¹­hassaccaį¹ pahātuį¹ asampajaƱƱaį¹ pahātuį¹ cetaso vikkhepaį¹ pahātuį¹. When you donā€™t have a fault-finding mind you can give up unmindfulness, lack of situational awareness, and a scattered mind.

So avikkhittacitto samāno bhabbo ayonisomanasikāraį¹ pahātuį¹ kummaggasevanaį¹ pahātuį¹ cetaso lÄ«nattaį¹ pahātuį¹. When your mind isnā€™t scattered you can give up irrational application of mind, following a wrong path, and mental sluggishness.

So alÄ«nacitto samāno bhabbo sakkāyadiį¹­į¹­hiį¹ pahātuį¹ vicikicchaį¹ pahātuį¹ sÄ«labbataparāmāsaį¹ pahātuį¹. When your mind isnā€™t sluggish you can give up substantialist view, doubt, and misapprehension of precepts and observances.

So avicikiccho samāno bhabbo rāgaį¹ pahātuį¹ dosaį¹ pahātuį¹ mohaį¹ pahātuį¹. When you have no doubts you can give up greed, hate, and delusion.

So rāgaį¹ pahāya dosaį¹ pahāya mohaį¹ pahāya bhabbo jātiį¹ pahātuį¹ jaraį¹ pahātuį¹ maraį¹‡aį¹ pahātunā€ti. After giving up greed, hate, and delusion you can give up rebirth, old age, and death.ā€
